Hi
Got an 06 GTi and the other day the aircon stopped blowing out cold air. I have checked the fans on the radiator and they are not spinning up when I turn the aircon on but don't know where the compressor is to check that.
Is it worth getting somewhere like kwikfit to recharge the system as I don't think its ever been recharged or is there an easy way to check if it is the compressor as looking online these seem to fail a lot?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Cheers
Ben

I had no cold air from mine last week - booked a Air Con service at VW £79.99 it turned out to be a faulty Air con pressure switch. They said there was no pressure in the pipes (I didn't know which to check)
That was swapped and system checked and serviced cost £128.28 and now its nice and cool - just need some sunshine to feel it was money well spent

From memory the air con pressure switch is actually a transducer so a bit harder to test manually. Anyone half decent with air-con systems should
be able to diagnose a compressor failure for you, FWIW mine exhibited similar symptoms, no fans kicking in and no cold air and that was a compressor failure. :scared:

Cheers guys. Might book it in with VW for a aircon service and hope for the best.
If it is the compressor then I will just have to open the windows.

...........if the compressor does fail do you still get hot warm air blowing in winter? i.e to clear windscreen etc?.

I'll have to check that but I guess I can run it in "econ" mode to get warm air.

mines been like this for some time now...
had it re-gased still the same
no fault codes
no pressure loss in the system.
Fans run when they need to..
Compressor on order now
Euro Car Parts have 30% when you use the code ISLEWORTH3

Ive been told by my dealer I need an AirCon service!!,,..... yet my Aircon works fine and is still nice and cool!!
They want to charge £90-£105 for it!, will they top it up or just check for leeks?,

Modern aircon systems aren't totally gas tight, and they don't hold a large amount of refrigerant, so it's best to get a periodic service. This should include a gas top up, and addition of a dye to the system to check for leaks. This tends to be best done yearly, due to the small gas reservoir in the Golf. My Subaru used to easily go two years between services.
But it doesn't need to be your dealer, any specialist can do this. Kwik Fit were offering a 'colder zircon or your money back' on aircon services not long ago.

Thank you

Just checked with Kwik Fit and they are still doing the "if your aircon isn't 10% colder then you don't pay"
Haven't got around to getting it checked yet as the weather is so awful.
