HI I'm the 3rd owner on my 55 plate GTI, currently reading 59k miles and it's still on the original exhaust...

I know Golf Mk.III with the first exhaust and of course many Mk.IV with the first one.
I never heard of any Mk.V having serious corrosion problems.
So no issue at all I guess. :wink:

Mine lasted for as short a time as humanly possible! I couldn't wait to take it off and replace it with a Milltek. My previous car was a straight-six BMW, totally unmodified but with a great sounding exhaust. My immediate criticism of the Mk5 GTI, and even more of the Mk6, is the cabin soundproofing - I like to enjoy hearing what's going on under my bonnet whatever I drive.

Agreed, I enjoy dropping the back seats and taking the parcel shelf out to get my golf clubs clubs in purely because you can actually hear the exhaust notes better! :rolleye:

....I did an 8 hour, 480-mile drive like that on Sunday in the pouring rain - It was almost too loud when at constant revs but not quite!
Sorry we're slightly off-topic (my fault) - I think the OEM exhaust lasts well as I've never heard of a problem so far. But it is more difficult to keep shiny if that's your thing.

Poor show isn't it....the exhaust sytems outlast the wings.

Mine was 5 years old and had covered nearly 112,000 miles when I sold it and I'd had no issues with the stock exhaust!

Put it this way.... ive never heard of a stock exhaust system failing on here, however I have heard stories of aftermarket systems going breasts up. Mine doesnt look great from underneath, it looks very brown :signLOL:

Mine failed at 72k. Heard a slight exhaust leaking sound that got worse over a few days. The day it was due to be looked at it just went, sounded like it had no exhaust!
Took it into ats, they said sorry, cant touch it, the manifold has gone..VW job I'm afraid... I thought fu*k..
Took it to the stealers and it turned out the be the downpipe, the pre-cat can had a great big split in it.
This could be down to me as I do give it a lot of stick very often so it does get lots of hot/cold fatigue. Then again could just be a normal failure..
