Title: VW Servicing Plan - Opinons?
Post by: andrewparker on June 17, 2011, 01:44:45 pm
Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone had taken out the 2 year VW Serving Plan? My car is due it's major service (despite the fact VW should have done it last year :stupid: ), and the plan seems like a no brainer.

For £349 you get two years of servicing, plus two free MOTs. The major service is £249 alone, plus the extra for an MOT.

I'm just wondering if there is a catch?

Hi, what type and age are your car? Negotiations to 1 side, that's not a bad price, but depends if you want/require all that the major service includes, with all the filters, etc!? I have learned that everything in life, especially with cars, there's always a catch!!

Mine is a 2006 GTI with 42K on it. It's on time and distance servicing so gets a service each year. It's always been to VW, so for me it's not really about what I want or require, it's more about following the correct routine for the car.

I just can't work out how it's got to 5 years old and never had it's major service!

Sounds odd, you sure it's never had things like brake-fluid change, or spark-plugs?? Im assuming it's had a change of cambelt??

Even though it is just for the servicing and MOT's it still works out pretty much in your favour. I think it also covers 1 brake fluid change iirc.

I would have gone for it except you have to wait 4 weeks after requesting it before your first service  :stupid:

I bought mine the day before my service.

In fact the girl told me I could have bought it on the day of my service. Not sure where 4 weeks came from.

I was told the paperwork had to go to VW which took 4 weeks (this was from VW Leeds).

and you couldn't wait 4 weeks???

I could've waited 4 weeks for the service but had to book it in urgently for a cambelt change so wanted it all done on the same day

It had a brake fluid change last year, but alongside an Interval Service. As far as I was aware the Major Service was every two years, but the same garage has managed to service the last two years and it's not had one. And no, spark plugs are not checked as having been changed.

Oh, and yeah, cambelt and water pump was changed last year.

So apparently there is also a standard service. The Major Service first happens at 40,000 miles, hence the reason mine has never had it.

I bought the service plan last year when it was £299 and was told about it when I booked the car in for it's 4th year service.  Can't remember the cost of the service, but it made sense to get it as I would be saving money straight away with the service, brake fluid change and MOT. Had the second service last month and was asked if I wanted to take the scheme again for another couple of years but have left it for the time being.

I've just finished my service plan. If you do low mileage you probably won't need plugs changed etc - these are apparently mileage sensitive.

Beware though if you're on T&D as they don't usually use Longlife oil on these service plans. The plan is now £350 for 2 years but if you have to add on another £90 for oil over this period, it starts to look slightly less attractive. I'm in two minds whether to do it again - purely because of the oil situation

They (VW Huddersfield) have used longlife oil every time they've serviced it, so I assume they'll continue to do so. I'll make sure I ask them to though.

I just went for the 2 year service plan the other day but had to pay extra for the oil change. Reading up on this forum it sounds like different users have had varying inclusions and exclusions when it comes to this plan. I didn't get an invoice for the service but was told that I will receive all the paperwork within the next 4 weeks which outlines everything.

Now what i'm wondering guys is that is there anyone on here who has signed up to the fixed servicing plan within the last couple of months who can provide further information as to whats included and excluded as stated on the paperwork / T's & C's from VW?

I'd take issue with that. The servicing plan included a major and a minor service, both of which include an oil change. It shouldn't be additional.

I meant Brake fluid change not oil change apologies. They did an oil change within the service but just had to pay extra for brake fluid change. I'm also planning on trying to squeeze 3 MOTs out of them as it does state free MOTs for the duration of your service plan so if you get 1 at the beginning of year 1, 1 at the beginning of year 2 and 1 at the end of year 2

Ah, in that case I'm pretty sure the brake fluid change isn't included.

Something to note if you're considering the 2 year Service Plan.

My car is 5 years old now and when I called to arrange this years service I was told it needed it's first major service. I was initially surprised because I was under the impression this had happened in it's 4th year. Because of this I decided to go for the 2 year service plan, thinking it would get the major service it needed this year, and a minor next.

So when I dropped the car off at VW this morning I was told that in the Service Plan they carry out the minor service first, then the major, seemingly regardless of which it actually needs! She openly admitted that they should have done it last year. I had to stamp my feet, and they agreed to do it today, but I basically had to go as far as standing up and threatening to walk out and get it done elsewhere, which didn't feel great.

This was VW Huddersfield, but I guess the same applied regardless of the dealership.

I took out this plan when I bought my car a year ago.
So far I have had 2 services and one MOT. Will be having the second MOT in November.
Took my car in for the second service last week, also had a brake fluid change done which they claimed through my service plan. And to make it even better, had the drivers door lock changed cos the sensor had gone in it and only had to pay for the part as they put the labour against my service and claimed that from VW too.  :pomppomp:
So from my point of view, well worth the money and will take out another one next year

I believe the new deal doesnt include a brake fluid change like it did for the £299 from last year

This is what is listed on my local stealers website (Citygate - South Ruislip):

Volkswagen Service Plan only £349 for 2 years servicing

Vehicles up to and including 2.0 litre engine example
1 x £129 Oil and filter service                              £129.00
1 x £249 Inspection service                                £249.00
1 x Air conditioning service                                   £75.00
2 x Annual safety inspections (between service)       £39.98
2 x MOT test fees                                            £109.70
Total value                                                      £602.68
Service plan 2yr/20k                                          £349.00
Saving                                                            £253.68

I assume the inspection service is the major one?

Also I assume these things will be extra:
Brake fluid change
DSG service
Cambelt & water pump
Anything else?

Sorry to hi-jack this thread, but my car has just hit 40k, and will be due a service end of the year. What exactly is involved with a "Major Service"? I had the cambelt done earlier this year, due to slight leak with waterpump (and it was over due anyway!!).

Thanks

Lippyx, if you have a service schedule in your handbook, that has a breakdown of the items changed at each major time/mileage point. I always have a good look before service, & check that the scheduled tasks have been carried out & correct bits replaced.

It's easy to ask your dealer, but I find the answers can differ wildly from place to place.
