Title: Is an S3 Intercooler enough !!!
Post by: gobbleplease on June 19, 2011, 09:12:38 pm
Alright i had the s3 cooler fitted to my gti at stage 2 + and i thought it was the perfect choice for a Ko3 car but im not sure if it is going to be the best on a 2+ K04, has anyone got any experiance of this eg heat soak from the s3 at 2+ with a noticable differance from any aftermarket intercooler

Ta Bryan :happy2:

Its all down to personal driving style. If you use the car on track for example. if so an s3 cooler with no doubt not be sufficient. The occasional blip down a dual carridgeway and the s3 cooler will cope ok. As Bacillus said an additional forge front mount will help but for me if your spending that kind of money then do away with the s3 cooler which you could then sell and replenish some of the money for the THS cooler and have in my personal opinion the best cooler on the market. Drive mine hard and not even the slightest bit of heat soak or loss of power. I will be going KO4 soon too and im confident it will stand up fine with the increased power

yea it would of been the THS i was going for, i sort of thought it would need to go tbh are the ths coolers still about the 600 mark ?

It would seem top is THS, 2nd twintercooler, 3rd S3.

I am yet to be delighted by my twintercooler, but I am at REVO tomorrow to see why it feels less responsive than before fitting. I'll report back, if I had my time again I'd go straight for the THS

JohnBoy got it right

Bigger area to fill with air compared to standard so will result in more turbo lag. Revo should ba able to adjust your settings to make it better.

Sorry to say, this does not appear to explain the performance, lag via this level of volume increase is potentially a miconception. I had a long conversation with a friend who is probably one of the best UK race engine mappers and veryexperienced with turbo motors (Including Lemans). Okay a different league to road cars, but he said to me categorically on a turbo motor of this configuration the increae in volume will not be noticeable.

Do a little match and even at 3,000 rpm the GTi will be consuming 50+ litres of air, I don't know how many litres the full inlet track is but the upstream impact will be very little in additional time to fill. The other point is that the reduction in pressure differential will go down and hence the required boost at the turbo to meet inlet boost will be slightly less

I hope Revo can bring back the 'drive' pre intall  :happy2:

But surely a BIG intercooler with more surface area/vanes will have more effect on slower moving air than it would on faster moving air...

I think it's just at that point where airflow has been effected by the cooler, whereas it wouldn't be affected if the air was alreaady moving faster through/before entering it... if ya get what i mean...

Dom

(good luck if you do - not 100% in own mind lol!)

Forge say that there cooler doesnt actually cause any more lag. This is beacause although you are adding extra pipework you arent actually increasing the distance the air is having to travel.
It works along side the standard cooler, adding air at a cooler temperature but surely this will mix with the air from the standard cooler which is less efficient and hotter so the air temp just averages out. I wasnt convinced on that piece of information but like said although it may cause a slight extra bit of lag if any at all, it would not explain lower performance feel or any flat spots. As once the turbo is spinning and the air is there the flow should stay constant and therfore so should the power.
From what i remember you saying on the rr day you are running low ish settings. I would imagaine and be near certain that after some tweaking of those settings to accomodate the cooler you will be more than happy again. Mine for instants is running quite high settings of B9T7F5 so will be interested of how they adjust. keep us informed

Forge actually list two different intercoolers? One for gti and one specific for the edition 30!? Why is this?

that is weird as im sure the pipe work is all the same and the core has to be the same size. Maybe a way of charging edition30 owners more as they obviously have too much money to own one   :P

The S3 cooler ports are smaller than the k03 gti ports and are clamped not clipped. They sent me the wrong tubes at first for my S3 cooler. The tubes were quite larger diameter(3/4") than the ports on the S3 cooler. They sent me new S3 cooler tubes and the fit was much better.
