Title: I would appreciate some tyres advice, please....
Post by: RedRobin on June 20, 2011, 10:39:41 am
.
I've been using asymmetric treads for some time: Several sets of Goodyear and then mixed with Dunlop (sister product) because GY were out of stock in early 2010, and now all Dunlop Sport Maxx because I bought a pair from Mandy on here.

I'm approaching the need to buy a new pair of tyres - I will fit them on the back axle and move the existing to the front. So whichever tyres I get they'll have to mix with the Dunlops on the front until they in turn wear out. Unlike some on this forum, I have had no problem whatsoever with the Dunlops but would prefer to go back to the Goodyears. I'm talking 225x18.

I've heard good things about the Michelin PS3's but would a pair mix safely with the Dunlops on the front until they wear out? I don't want to be randomly inducing the ESP snatch - Been there and done that and got the T-shirt (mixing directionals with asymmetrics - on different axles of course) and it's not nice.

I have also heard good things about the Vredesteins except that they take more time to warm up and are relatively expensive.

So, I'm not looking for confirmation of a choice I've already made - I genuinely am not sure which tyres to get next and would appreciate your thoughts/advice, guys  :drinking:

Robin,

sorry it's not an input helping your choice.  Just want to know what experiences you've had mixing Assymetrics / directional.  I was forced to change my Goodyear F1 assy for Falken f452 this month and will soon match the fronts with another pair of Falkens.  (Cheep option while I save to carry on ticking things off my wishlist again.)

What horrors should I expect under this temporary setup?

Cheers  :drinking:

Would you recommend the PS3's for fast road use, Mat?

I'm not sure I want to buy 4 tyres though. Hmm.. food for thought. At least my daughter is used to seeing a pair of tyres in the entrance hall at home! Some of my visitors (usually the females) have raised an eyebrow though, but I don't care two sh!ts.

Costco are £149 minus 20% for PS3's which works out around £120.

I have heard stories that you can get them for £127 at certain other tyre dealers so unless you are local and a member I probably wouldn't bother.

....No prob, Mike  :happy2:

What happens is that the directionals and asymmetrics each give different feedback to the ESP system and it thinks it needs to rescue you and so applies braking as it sees appropriate. This 'feedback' is the result of differences especially in the wall stiffness of the tyres.

I found it happened more at speed in long bends - Very scary the first time when it was on a road with stone walls either side and the car unexpectedly snatched. I kept my foot planted and found that driving through it was the best way when it happened again. Always random - I even tried to induce it on the same stretch of road but perhaps I wasn't going quite as fast for fear of what might happen. Once I knew what it was (advised by Goodyear Technical) I ignored it but it's still not nice.

No complaints about my Goodyear asymms in the wet though. I think that the asymmetric treads are great in the wet.

If buying 4 I'd take a look at the Michelin Supersports assuming they are available in the right size.

Better in the wet and dry compared to PS2, closer to a PSC on a dry track, seems like the perfect tyre for a road car that sees the track?

Well, Michelin Super Sports clearly are an amazing tyre but they don't offer 225 x 40 x 18. I haven't gone as far as finding out cost but I have a hunch they're expensive.

Currently I think it's probably between the Michelin PS3's and Goodyear Asymmetric 2's. The GY2's are reported to be even better than the GY1's.

I have a pair of GY Aysm 1s on the front (about 4mm), and new Asym 2 on the rear. With this combination the ESP does occasionally throw a wobbler, and generate a mid-corner hic-cup. That said, it's normally when "making progress", and wouldn't bother most people.

The asym 2 appear to be quieter, though the extra depth of rubber could also be a factor.

Mine, albeit 17s, were £106 each fitted.

£174.00 a corner from Camskill - good in wet unlike the R888

....Neither of those tyres are good for all weather (except snow which I never go out in anyway) road use. I don't do enough trackdays to warrant a more track orientated tyre and have enjoyed all my trackdays on the Goodyear Asymms, including a very wet day at Spa.

Ahh I thought you might have some winter tyres on anyway between Nov-Feb? What about the new continental sc5(?) i think the Bruce has some experience of them

No, as I said, I don't bother driving anywhere if there's snow and I find the Goodyear/Dunlop asymmetrics have been excellent in even extremely heavy rain. No need for separate winter tyres for me fortunately.

I assume the Continentals you suggest are asymmetric - I'm only interested in asymm tyres as they make a big difference. The Conti's which my car came with are easily the worst tyre I've experienced!

I still think the choice is between Goodyear Asymmetric2's and Michelin PS3's.
Title: Re: I would appreciate some tyres advice, please....
Post by: simonp on June 20, 2011, 03:40:04 pm
I have the PS3's and don't like them. The compound is too hard for spirited driving and fast cornering always gives the sensation that you're about to be spat into a hedge at any second. They always feel like you're on a knife edge when it comes to grip in corners. They're noisy, too! Not too bad in the wet, though, I'll give them that.

I have a heavier car though, that requires 41psi in the tyres, so maybe they work better on a GTI?
Title: Re: I would appreciate some tyres advice, please....
Post by: rich83 on June 20, 2011, 03:44:05 pm
I cant fault my f1 assyms for grip. Sometimes they feel a little scrabbly on full tilt when steering (like when overtaking cars on b roads)
Title: Re: I would appreciate some tyres advice, please....

Simon and Ian:
Perhaps some of it is down to personal preferences of the feel, or even inflation differences though I expect both of you followed the psi recommendation.

Like Rich, I can't fault the Goodyear's grip. I rarely get scrabble and it gets taken care of very quickly.

It would be interesting to hear the opinion of someone who has had both PS3's and GY1's, although GY2's are the current ones.
Title: Re: I would appreciate some tyres advice, please....
Post by: simonp on June 20, 2011, 04:27:01 pm
I've tried them at different pressures etc with not a lot of difference in feel. I think I'd rather a softer compound and sacrifice the long life these seem to have. I've done about 6K on these and they look like new still. When I had my Clio I was wearing out my tyres in that sort of distance!
Title: Re: I would appreciate some tyres advice, please....
Post by: Hedge on June 20, 2011, 04:30:49 pm
I believe the PS3's are supposed to wear well. They were the replacement for the old Pilot Exaltos.

I didn't check my .:R before I got rid but I think there was still plenty on them.
Title: Re: I would appreciate some tyres advice, please....
Post by: simonp on June 20, 2011, 04:37:27 pm
That's the issue, I reckon. Hard wearing tyres aren't grippy tyres.

I never had a grip problem either except in the snow and that was intentional.

....So perhaps the Goodyears are a preferable compromise. Having reliable grip is much more reassuring.

I am getting the Toyo T1 Sports next month and the garage owner has them fitted to his car. I have always been a fan of the T1-R as the garage owner is. He loves the new T1 Sport and says that they are one of the best tyres he has fitted to his car.  He had the Goodyear and says the Toyo for grip and feel are much better and cheaper.  I shall report back once I have had them fitted, though they are going on the rear so I wont expect a massive difference in handling.  I will have a better idea once I change the fronts for them, which hopefully should be the following month?

Robin, I run PS3's all round  (after running PS2 front and Exalto rear)
PS3 are a great tyre but lack the ultimate grip of the PS2.
Biggest criticism with PS3 is they take a few miles to 'warm up' , which has caught me out on more than one occasion (and appears more pronounced than any other tyre I've tried to date), but once warm they perform very well.
limit on PS3's is definitely less than PS2's in the dry.
PS3 was good (relatively) in the snow.
Id say PS3 feel better in standing water compared to PS2
A great tyre, but as I've said before its not the SuperSport version (which is the true successor to the PS2).
Ill check when I get home how much mm Ive used up so far for the mileage.

PS3 =  a great compromise road tyre that works well in all conditions.

Id love to try some supersports but if I cant then id happily run PS3's again.

whats your yearly mileage?

Tyres is such a subjective thing, that rarely, do we ever agree.
Each of our criteria is different, and we all run on diff cars/pressures and driving styles.

....I'm beginning to realise how subjective.

My mileage has nose-dived this last 12 months from ~18k to ~6k miles! I'm expecting it to stay that low. My car lives in her batcave regularly for a fortnight and then I'll drive 200-400 miles in one day and she'll return to the batcave for another rest. She like me: Getting old.

My preference is always Michelin, however.... I've just ordered GY Asym 2s for the BMW, as I couldn't find any new-old stock of PS2s or get Supersports in my sizes.

I dismissed the PS3 as there are more expensive than the GY and not as good as a PS2.

So, having been pretty impressed with the Asym 1 when I had them on the Golf (my only criticism being sidewall stiffness) and all reports saying the 2 is far superior, in terms of grip, sidewall stiffness and noise - what's not to like??

If they're as good as PS2s, then I'll be very happy. I doubt they'll be as good as SSs, but then they're nearly half the price and this isn't going to see as much track as the Golf did, so do I really need them?? I very much doubt you do too.

Dunlops I've found are garbage, buy 4 new tyres and sell those 2 you have on.
The Bridgestone RE050As currently on the BMW are very good, but shocking in the wet.
The Conti 5s on the Clio were really very good all rounders, but wore fast.
I'm sure some other makes are perfectly good too, Vreds and Hankooks seem popular, but I've no experience of them.

Hope that helps?

BTW - miss seeing you around, you at Inters??

Michelin SS are clearly excellent but it's horses for courses and not worth it as I don't do many trackdays and they don't come in 225/40R/18's anyway.

Most people simply aren't going to be driving a car on the road to such a degree that the extra benefit of SSs will be necessary. If you're pushing that hard, you want to question whether you're being an idiot and need to pack it in quick.

Certainly not in 300 horse hatches anyway, a 458 Italia maybe, they're for serious cars and 'can't be bothered with a spare set of wheels' track action.

The Megane that's just lapped the Ring in record time was on RE050As, they're better than their offerings of old. "Shocking" was maybe a bit much, but 300+ horses through the rear has different consequences in the wet to a FWD, so I'm understandably cautious!!!*

* They do make for nice, progressive drifting though

What happens is that the directionals and asymmetrics each give different feedback to the ESP system and it thinks it needs to rescue you and so applies braking as it sees appropriate. This 'feedback' is the result of differences especially in the wall stiffness of the tyres.

I found it happened more at speed in long bends - Very scary the first time when it was on a road with stone walls either side and the car unexpectedly snatched. Always random - I even tried to induce it on the same stretch of road but perhaps I wasn't going quite as fast for fear of what might happen. Once I knew what it was (advised by Goodyear Technical) I ignored it but it's still not nice.

I had the same experience. I put 2 new Goodyear F1 Asym XL on the front with Dunlop SP Maxx XL on the rears. At high speeds, the best way I can describe it - feels like I'm caught in a strong cross wind with the car moving around constantly - really unnerving. I've sinced swapped the Dunlops back to the front and it feels more stable, I think due to stiffer sidewall - but I find them a bit noisy, less grippy, and wheel spin too much in the rain. I'm a bit pissed off because I asked the tyre shop about mixing asyms with radials and they said it wouldn't be a problem.

As I was out in the car today (dropped my daughter plus some girlies to Glastonbury Festival), I dropped in on a few places and am fairly sure I'm going for the Goodyear Asymmetric 2 tyres - £147 each. Rubber will have another price increase in about a month's time.

My VW dealer said they'd fit them for free  :pomppomp:

Was quoted MOT £35 inc vat at my VW dealer < Methinks that sounds extremely reasonable.

Must be a really crappy compound because at first glance they look like track orientated tyres.  :surprised:

Simon and Ian:
Perhaps some of it is down to personal preferences of the feel, or even inflation differences though I expect both of you followed the psi recommendation.

Like Rich, I can't fault the Goodyear's grip. I rarely get scrabble and it gets taken care of very quickly.

It would be interesting to hear the opinion of someone who has had both PS3's and GY1's, although GY2's are the current ones.

Robin

I ran my Ed30 initially on the Pilot Exaltos that came OEM.

I then swapped the fronts for PS3's which i found better in all areas than the exalto's and managed about 15k before they wore out.

I swapped them for F1 Asymetricals MK1 and must say i found that the F1's had more grip in both the wet and dry.

The rear tyres were still the exaltos and never had an issue with any of the cominations.

Thanks, scotta  :happy2: - I'm very impressed with my GY Asymm 1's therefore choosing the 2's make good sense to me.

Shop around for asym 2 prices, Robin. I just got 2x225/40/18 and 2x255/35/18 for £520 all in... your quote sounds a bit of a liberty.

Have you considered pirelli p-zero's? Ran them on my mk4 r32 on them for a while and rate them. Around £125 a corner all in.

....The question will be whether they will supply only. I get free fitting from my VW dealer anyway and I trust their work.

Put it this way, if you owned a tyre shop and someone offered you the supply & fit price for just supply, what would you say?

I purchased some toyo t1 sports on Monday and am very impressed with them.  Got them for just over £100 fitted and the difference in the grip on the rear is immense. It didnt feel like that on the old tyres when they were new.  Im getting some fitted to the fronts next month    The sidewalls are very rigid and they have dual compound from the inside to the outside edge and are very similar in pattern to the Conti Sport 3s.  Well worth a consideration!

Sounds good, where did you get them from? I'm probably going to replace all 4 corners at once but can't decide on Vreds, Goodyears or Mich PS2s plus there may be the Toyos you mention to consider.

I got them from Selecta Tyre in Newark, Nottinghamshire.  Been going to them for years so they always give me a good price :happy2:
