Schoolboy error, in that I didn't take 'before' pics, but trust me the exhaust was filthy and black, I'm sure anybody that came down to JKM for the RR could confirm this.
Anyway, after reading numerous articles about what to use/not to use, I went onto the Milltek website on cleaning advise.
A lot of guys on here swear by Autosol, and I'm sure it's good. The Milltek site told me to use simple Silvo from Tesco (with wadding).......£2.29 who can complain at that price?
Started with some rubber gloves, hot water and a non-scratch foam scourer to remove what I could of the black SH!T :happy2:
After letting it dry for a bit I got out the silvo wadding and starting polishing, and in between polishing I continued using the non-scratch foam scourer to assist in getting the stubborn muck off.
A word of advise....!!!!! Make sure you cut the wadding in half before starting the polishing. I didn't and thought I was going to go to hospital when the back end of the wadding (due to my vigorous polishing) shot up and sprayed Silvo in my eye.......what F**Kin pain that was!!! :signLOL:
Anyway, after washing my eye out numerous times I continued with the job at hand.
After leaving the milky silvo residue to dry, and being sure that all the muck was off, I polished the tips up with a simple blue economy cloth. :jumpmove:
Pics below - excuse the rest of my filthy car, the exhaust is now the cleanest part :signLOL:

Nice one mate.
I gave up trying to clean mine and just bought a milltek instead :D
That is a milly Al....
Well done mate, its about time you sorted them out :drinking:
-
:signLOL: mine is a Milltek 1
Are you saying your tips don't go black? :fighting:
-
Mines a Miltek & filthy
-
Much better!
Now sort that block paving out!
Jeyes Fluid will kill the moss (and Bird Flu) :happy2:
-
:signLOL: I'll get the missus to sort that out straight away!!
-
Autosol is great as well!
-
I'm sure it is, I know quite a few guys on here rave about it. I just thought I'd try what Milltek suggested, and for the price it works a treat! :drinking:
-
Use 00 Grade wire wool and autosol... its what most detailers use to get exhausts looking shiny again and its very easy!!!
-
Ive tried everything on my standard tips and nothing really worked on the tarnished bits (i prob left em dirty for far too long) till I tried that Astonish Hob cleaner stuff (comes in a small square tub and is a white paste) :happy2: It really is amazing and works really well wth one of those no-scratch sponge scourers like Jussa mentioned. Its cuts really good without any damage
Cheap as chips too.

:signLOL:, that stuff sounds good as well, may have to try some next time :happy2:
The tarnished bits took quite a bit of elbow grease to get off, but eventually they did start disappearing :jumpmove:
Maybe that oven cleaner stuff will remove the grubby stuff easier, so will try it next time, but I would deffo recommend the silvo for a nice shiny finish!!
-
good result-i use the silvo wadding as well --now you need to do inside the tips as well :happy2:
-
And now the 'beast' has been cleaned to match the shiny exhaust :pomppomp:
Not really quality pics though, only taken with my iphone 3GS

Nice Car
-
Looks good mate :happy2:
Just wish they stayed that clean :sad1:
-
Thanks Ed, just needs the climate panel to work now
Lee, you're right, all the dark ones are a pig to keep clean, unlike the silver ones :sad1:
-
Looking good mate :happy2:
-
The Silver wadding lasts ages as well I bought a tin about 2 years ago and it still going strong. Once clean the tips only really need a quick wipe over and the shine comes back.
and I only paid about a pound for in Asda as well.........
-
Looks good Jussa, know how you feel about keeping the dark ones clean, dust just seem to stick to it straight after cleaning.
My exhaust is in need of a good clean as well.
I am assuming it has to be Silvo or is any metal polish alright to use? I could not find any in Morrisons and was thinking about getting Brasso but it is not for silver.
Thanks in advance.
-
Jussa, car looks mint! i just had a go at the tailpipe, i actually thought it was matt black! insert sarcastic :congrats: got about 80% of the black crap off but just gave up with the rest, i wasnt sure if the chrome had actually been eroded or not....
anyhow, quick question....seeing your bumpers colour coordinated made me realise it has to be done on mine....did u get that done??? how much did it cost?
-
Thanks guys.
The bumper and side skirtings I had done for £270 at a local panelbeater
To be honest I also thougt mine were matt black :signLOL:
If you use a soft non-scratch scourer and just keep polishing with the silvo it will eventually come off, it wouldn't have eroded. You may have to leave a layer of silvo on the tip for about 30 minutes and then keep on polishing, but it will come off.
Obviously I wouldn't recommend brasso, but if you look at this whole thread some guys do use particular oven cleaners and get good results. :jumpmove:
BTW you should be able to get Silvo in any Tesco or Sainsbury's :drinking:
-
270....not bad, wud hope to get it done slightly cheaper, will call around, were you happy with the result, i think it makes a big difference, well from what i can see on your pics compared to mine!
im sure on a previous topic i posted about window tinting you said you got yours done on your car, i cant rly notice the tint tho on your most recent pics?
-
just had a go at this using the soft non scratch scourer and the Silvo wadding...
...and i've had mixed results:
The good: The tips of my exhaust look better :rolleye:
The bad: they aint all over shiney :sad1:
I don't think i've put in enough elbow grease but some of the tarnishing and the black shoite looked like it's never gonna shift. I'll have another go at it tomorrow if i get time but i'm wondering whether to bust out the wire wool and look for some autosol as well... :scared:
If i get any better results i may be so bold as to post pictures but at the moment it aint worth it
Well done to Jussa for getting the result he did, i can really appreciate it having had a go :congrats:
