Title: Recommend me a good lawnmower please?
Post by: big al on June 24, 2011, 05:48:45 pm
Hi guys,
Daft question...maybe, but my dad always told me that the only stupid question is one that is never asked. (He also gave me some crap advice too though, of cause you can put alcaceltza in the fish bowl....)

Had our house for about 6 years now, the back lawn is about 30 foot long, and quite uneven.
In this time I have got through a couple of lawn mowers, recently killed my Flymo one with all the stones that it sucked up breaking the blade and chewing up half the garden.
Recently I replaced it with a qualcast cylinder mower, though this too is crap and jams every 2 yards.

I think I need to go and spend a few £ on a decent one, but want peoples suggestions,
Are cylinder mowers much better than rotary,
Is a petrol mower worth getting over electric (have to say I hope so as I get sick of  taking the wire out all the time at the moment!)

Any recommendations on brands/specific mowers would be appreciated.  :happy2:

If the garden is uneven don't get a cylinder mower. Get a rotary and get one from a Lawnmower retailer rather than b & q homebase etc. Petrol better than electric but with such a small garden i would get electric rotary , perhaps a metal balde you can sharpen yourself may also be better. Petrol ones obviously need servicing.

Best thing to do if you have the time and are willing to is to kill the grass thats on there now with Roundup, dig it up and level it out, put some decent new top soil down and seed it. As long as it's nice and level and well seeded then almost any mower will cut it and will save you spending ££ every couple of years on mowers :happy2:
