Anyone put/heard of anyone fitting a quicker steering rack onto the GTI?
Something I quite fancy doing really. 8)
-
i find it a bit slow at times...
-
smaller steering wheel would be massively cheaper? a nice MOMO prehaps?
-
yo do know you can alter the setting in vag com for the rack
-
Like Matt says you can change the resistant settings for the power steering.
-
fk me, i need to use this....
just started another thread if you can use the selectplus switch for vcom

if vcom is a typo and you really mean vcds (vag-com) then the answer is no.

Where abouts in VCDS is this setting??
Try this:
[Select]
[44 - Steering Assist] (from Chassis tab)
[Recode - 07]
Take note of the value which is in the form 0001x1 where x is the weight setting, eg 000121
If x is set to 1, it will be very light, if it is set to 5 it will be heavy
Replace the number with the required weight, eg 000151

cool to know :happy2:
whats the std default setting from the factory ?
-
iirc it's 2

Thanks as always Bacillus. Ok, so as I understand this, this setting is to alter the weighting/resistance of the power steering. How is this going to make the car react as if it had a quicker steering rack? By that I mean that I am looking for less steering wheel turning force needed to turn the car to the required point.

Not sure what you mean by a quicker rack with this tinkering as all it does is increase or decrease the weighing of the steering.
For a quicker rack you will need to change the gearing ratio on the rack itself.
-
Ah, then this is not quite what I'm looking for then. Although its worth a fiddle!!
I just want the car to feel more darty - and chuckable into corners. A quick steering rack would do this by allowing for more vehicle movement with less steering input. I had one on my old MINI, and it was so enjoyable!

Just set the fronts to toe out like hell, old school Alfa style - balls to tyre wear!
