Title: When do you "feel" the boost?
Post by: mattchaps on June 29, 2011, 08:49:13 am
Just wondering how many of you take note of when the boost kicks in. On the way to work this morning I came off a roundabout and floored it in 3rd from about 1,500rpm. I didn't really get any noticable boost until 2,500rpm and then she pulled hard all the way to about 5,500rpm?

How does this compare to other's experiences?

Flooring it from 3rd from only 1,500 revs is relying on torque and always relying on torque is apparently not good for an engine in the long term. You'll get faster acceleration from 2nd at 1,500 and quickly shifting to 3rd at higher revs. DSG or Manual? If DSG, check out what happens booting it in S-mode.

I have a boost gauge mounted on the steering column and do often take notice of it and it behaves as if attached by a rod to my right foot.

I'm K03.

I see what you're saying RR, but this was more of a test to see how the car was performing, holding boost etc.

Normally I would definately be in 2nd before flooring it at those sort of speeds!

....I'm not driving my car for the next few days but when I do I'll make a point of checking how the boost performs and then contribute an answer here.

U haven't mentioned whether your car is mapped, and if so what stage?

K04 - from around 3000rpm.

....If you're asking me, it's Revo2 and Revo on the DSG.

It's weird, because in two different golf experiences, one was about 2,000, the other 3,000...! :\

Mine's completely standard. Boost at 3k rpm seems rather delayed. With the KO3 I would have thought around 2k rpm should expect to see a  nice amount of torque??

K03: from around 1,800 revs today  :happy2:. But the boost gauge shows activity the instant I press the accelerator.

I know you have mods Robin, but your result still makes me think something isn't right with mine. To have to wait until 3k rpm before any real activity isn't right!

When I had my gti it was always 2.5 before u felt any power and 3 when u felt it was on full boost, but I did have a boost leak at the end, I think it was diverter valve have you got any hissing noises or have you ever had your car vag com'd to see if there is any faults

....As soon as you remap a turbo'd car it's the feeling of boost which you experience. As Damo says, a boost gauge is a very reliable way of seeing what's happening.

Buy an r32 no lag and sounds better :D

Nope, had an R32 and then turbo'd it! Admittedly the boost came on earlier in that and I'm aware I shouldn't expect the same, but I'm just surprised at how late it seems to come in on the GTI.

Hoping to get it vagcom'd soon, location and work make it difficult. But I have been hearing hissing noises from the turbo (DV) and they change as the revs increase.

....It's beginning to sound as if you have an OEM DV, not the latest revision, and that the plastic diaphram is failing < Not an uncommon fault but more so on tuned cars. The diaphram splits/tears.

After changing plugs, coils and PCV I had a feeling this was next. Am booking her in to AmD Essex soon for some mods including the Forge DV. In the mean time I'm hopig VRS Carl can make his was over to vagcom her to see if there are any clues hiding!

Thanks Robin :happy2:

In most instances, the latest oem version D divertor valve would work just as well as the Forge version with the added bonus of it being cheaper iirc around £40.

Should I not bother going Forge then, will the OEM one cope with mild mods up to stage 2 remaps?

That's entirely up to you.
The forge one came out when the original oem dv had a diaphragm and it was prone to splitting with increased boost from a remap. The new oem version D one is a new design with no diaphragm and much less prone to failure.

I hear a hissing noise from the turbo too but only when I'm on full throttle then lift off or shift up another gear? Boost seems fine to me though, could this be signs of the DV failing?

Flooring it from 3rd from only 1,500 revs is relying on torque and always relying on torque is apparently not good for an engine in the long term. You'll get faster acceleration from 2nd at 1,500 and quickly shifting to 3rd at higher revs. DSG or Manual? If DSG, check out what happens booting it in S-mode.

Does boost change in S mode, I thought S mode just meant it changed gear higher up the revs?

Boost remains the same but with higher change up rpm in S mode.

....Yes, my reference to S-mode was to observe and note when the DSG system shifts gears according to the revs.  :happy2:
