Title: Changing Head Unit
Post by: euroscot on July 01, 2011, 06:18:53 pm
Hi,

I bought myself an Edition 30 which was registered in December 07. I'm wanting to fit a MFD3 RNS 510 version c Head unit but heard it could cause battery drain and VW said they won't fit it as it could interupt the car. Does anybody know if this is compatible with my car?

I’ve got an October 07 57 Reg Edition 30 and does not suffer with battery drain; you really need to get the car scanned with VCDS and find out what cangate way you have fitted. Mine is on Part No SW: 1K0 907 530 L. Hope this helps.  :happy2:

You need to get it scanned, list of people who can do it here.

I think rather than going to all that hastle I'll fit it and see what happens. One thing I can't find is an Ipod cable for it, most sites say the cable is compatible with the RNS 510 (Not 1T0035680C) which mines is.

If you want to control an I-pod though the RNS 510 you will need to fit an MDI kit as on the link below. Will give total control of the I-POD from the head unit.

If it helps I have the same head unit as yours with the same part number and all working correctly.

Generally GTI's after March 2007 will be fine regarding the battery drain issues.

So its not just a case of plugging a cable into the back of the unit? Where can I buy a kit if this is what I need?

I'm sure you'll be fine, my Ed30 is Jan07 and I fitted the C version without problems

Don't forget the RNS has a 30 gig HD, you can get plenty of music on there before worrying about MDI/ipod kits (~£150)
