So after seeing a couple of Exiges, go past me at Oulton, it got me thinking about my car. As most of you know i had recaro's in my GTI, which basically meant its usage went from a weekend car to a track car only, once my son arrived on the earth. Totally in practical for children.
My GTI was much loved and i found it hard to push her to the limits on track days. Also leaving the circuit, the GTI sounded terrible, every bush and connection swollen from friction and working the weight. It sounded like JoesGTI had borrowed it for a week. :sad1:
So i figured i might as well get myself something track focused if thats all my car was going to be, and even though the GTI had lots of goodies to help on track it was hard to justify keeping a Mk5 GTI just for track days. :stupid:
So after little deliberation i decided on a Exige, even though i loved the shape and style of the Exige, i knew little about them or Lotus. So i dived in researching and discovering about the model and the brand.
And after 3 months bought this. :happy2:
It is a S2, Type 72.
This Exige was built as a limited edition, it celebrates the heyday of Lotus Motorsport. From 1970 − 1975ish, Lotus designed and built a truly amazing formula one car in that era, so good in fact, it became the most successful and famous F1 car in history. It achieved 20 race wins in that period. The sponsor livery was world famous anyone over the age of 30 will remember the JPS livery :pomppomp:
I certainly do. :ashamed:
There were only 20 Exige Type72's made to commemerate the 20 wins in this era. My particular one celebrates the British GP win by Emerson Fitipaldi at Brands Hatch. :pomppomp:
Plate in the passengers side sill.

and here is the F1 type 72D that was head and shoulders above all competition at the time.

I decided on the type 72, one, because it is gorgeous and evoked lots of childhood memories , but also it has a perfect spec for track, it comes with the sports and performance pack and all the best bits of the touring pack option.
The sports pack has, twin oil coolers, adjustable front arb, roll over hoop, harness bar and probax seats for the harness.
The performance pack has a power upgrade to 240 BHP, uprated brakes including vented and drilled 4 pot AP brakes. and a few other bits that i cant remember.
The touring pack is for luxuries like a cup holder and leather trim here and their + sound deadening material. Mine only gets the leather and alcantera as part of the Type 72 custom interior. :innocent:
You also get air-con with mine, daft i thought until i realised the engine was strapped to my back.
240 BHP is not a lot in todays world, but put that power in a car that weighs less than 2/3rds of a GTI then you get a fast little bugger. 0-60 in around 4 seconds. :driver:
I have only had one proper drive so far and trust me it does not hang about.
This car is a world away from the GTI. every drive seems to be an event, from getting in it, to getting out, it just brings a big grin to your face. :notworthy:
Some mods on the way soon, but lotus kindly did most of them for me.
-
about time   see you next week :happy2:
-
OMFG
epic, stunning TC :happy2:
-
:congrats: Absolutely awesome. The second pic (head on) hit my heart like an arrow. Love the black and gold colour scheme - it's awesome! Reminds me of the T/A from Smokey and the Bandit.
In a head-to-head on a quarter mile, how would it fare against joe's dad's porsche?
-
Very nice TC, looks full of win :happy2:
Darren
-
Looks amazing
Truly a stunning car :happy2:
-
looking good matey! see you soon in it!
-
Stunning Tom, much better than that green one you were tempted with! I love the colour scheme, I remember the JPS Lotus F1 cars very well, a guy down the road from me used to drive the JPS Team Bus and even brought the F1 cars to a local fete one year!
I love it.....cant wait to see it in the flesh sometime. :notworthy:
-
That is stunning TC, and the history and association with the British Grandprix is Epic!
-
Wow! I think I may have just done a little sex-wee!! :ashamed:
-
stunning Tc..photos are amazing

Some amazing shots too there fella! Look forward to a blast in her sometime soon! :driver:
-
:congrats: :congrats:
I've had the pleasure of driving a VX220 Turbo with stage 2 map, and that thing was insane. Half the fun is getting in and out of them, im 6ft 4" and it was certainly hard trying to get in an out, pretty much had to crawl out.... :signLOL:
-
That car is poop!
-
.
Stunning! And imo the best looking Lotus there is (I don't particularly like most Lotuses). It actually looks as if it's quite comfortable. Obviously it's got incredible roadholding and performance in its class.
You're gonna have soooo much fun! :pomppomp: :jumpmove: :pomppomp: :jumpmove: :pomppomp: :star:
Your photography is going from strength to strength :notworthy:
-
Amazing!!!
:happy2: :congrats: :happy2: :congrats: :happy2:
Love the JSP style as well from my memory.
-
YES!
That is all...
-
thanks for the kind words. :happy2: All i want to do is take people for a drive, to see if it does the same to them as it does to me. It has a stage 3 lotus exhaust, couple that with the supercharger screaming right behind your head at 8000 rpm it is like nothing i have driven. It has no power steering, and because of the downforce created, you have to man handle it round the bends. :driver:
cant wait to get her on track. :scared:
-
That car is poop!
-
Nice weapon! :driver:
What Power station is that?
-
Nice weapon! :driver:
What Power station is that?
Its a ZZT they have them in Celicas. Oh! did you mean in the back ground. Fiddlers Ferry. :happy2:

 Loving the colour scheme, bet you can't wait to put it round a track

Honestly, I will die of envy . Please excuse my multiple posts but I really can't help myself. I just have to say again: awesome, awesome car. Enjoy it!
BTW, about tracking... fancy a Nring & Spa trip at the beginning of August? I'll be there, if you are coming please tell me so I can see your car live.
-
There is life after DSG................
 Quite a few guys put smaller pulleys on these cars and the gear box goes bang at anything over 300BHP. :rolleye:
I must admit the knob is right up by the wheel and the sound of the changes if you blip the throttle puts the DSG to shame, and that takes some doing as the DSG burp is immense. :pomppomp:
-
I know what you mean. In sport mode I get crackles on the over run. My soon to be carried mod, will only aid that.

Rex i plan on doing lots of track days, but cant plan any yet as the stage 3 zorst is to loud for track limits so i am in the process of ordering a different one, but the guy who makes them is somewhat busy and it could be a while.
Saying that my insurance came with 6 track days anywhere in the world, apart from the green hell. :jumpmove: so i might end up coming over. :pomppomp:
-
Stunning looking car and a great replacement for the GTI!
-
Very nice TC, hope to see you on track some time :happy2:
-
That car is poop!
I think he's being postmodern dude
A very lovely car mate. I've been weighing up an Elise Club Racer, though it wouldn't be until April/May next year. Just don't know if I'm brave enough!
-
Lotus plus black and gold livery is the colour scheme, fab car, fab pics, enjoy every drive.
Wonder if McLaren will do a Marlboro Edition MP412C..doubt it...

-
likin that alot pal :happy2:
-
absolutely love that fella
-
WOW!!!.. way to go TC... My Mrs has just said you have too much money to splash about.. :signLOL:
-
Very nice car TC :happy2:
Those seem to be fetching nearly 38k on pistonheads :surprised:
-
Loving the new choice of wheels Tom, great choice. :congrats:
I drove a 240 a while back (not you're edition mind) and although it rattled my teeth out and would hardly be suitable for day to day use, it was utterly bonkers.. :stupid: :jumping: Just loved the mechanical feel, the noise, the handling, the noise, the acceleration, oh and did I mention the noise? :jumping: The bloody thing sounded like a fighter jet that had just sucked up a whining baby.. :surprised:
Can't wait to see it roll up at a future meet lathered in blue gaffer tape.. :rolleye:
-
That is with out a doubt the Nicest lotus ive ever seen !! :
-
superb mr Cat :happy2: and way way way better colour scheme than the
yellow green one you showed me :signLOL:
looking forward to a ride in it (i had a ride in a GT3 at the weekend to be good to compare )
top choice :notworthy:
-
Is it just me or does it look like it's moving on in the side on pics???? Especially the one in your sig.
Love the car and the colour and the history and the fact you have the one that relates to the British win. Just couldn't have chosen better.
Have fun :happy2:
-
gorgeous
-
That is absolutely stunning TC. I have a real soft spot for the Exige. Definitely one of my "to own" cars. If i could afford one now as a 2nd car for Track use, i would be buying one straight away.
-
BEAUTIFUL!!

Aye the noise is something to behold. :scared: i have been thinking of ways to describe it, and your description is pretty much spot on. :rolleye:
I wasn't expecting the car to go down as well as it has on here. :chicken: quite shocked. :driver:
-
I've just seen my next car
Man that is stunning! Good shots also.
-
Lovely, lovely car TC :happy2:
Always had a soft spot for the JPS Lotus' too, so even better :driver:
-
Very nice TC
Does it have the easi entry/exit option for when you take me out in it???
A tub of slippy lard and a crowbar :sad1:
-
That is just gorgeous, just wish I could fit in cars like that as I'd have one... :notworthy:
-
the sequence is.....
Leg, Bum on side pod, Head under roof, slide into seat, Other leg!!! haha!
-
Well I once had a look at Bell and Coalville? Just up from Guildford, they had to tak ethe roof off for me to get in, once in I couldn't operate the clutch or move the steering wheel as my knew as jammed between the wheel and the sill... Was gutted...
-
the sequence is.....
Leg, Bum on side pod, Head under roof, slide into seat, Other leg!!! haha!
What about the run/jump straight in through the window? :signLOL:

I hear ya Dom :sad1: is a gorgeous car but a bit too cramped for tall guys, i shoe horned myself into an exige at a london motor show a few years back to win a bet with the Lotus guy on the stand :signLOL: thank god it had no roof on
Dave

I've allways had a soft spot for the exige, love the cars! Love the colours they come in too..the green with black wheels etc...proper motorsport car
Once my finace has all gone I think I may get a exige s2 for a weekend car in a few years, great choice tc :congrats:
Now explain these mods your planing :popcornsoda:
-
Had the bathtub a few weeks now, thought i would just do a report on it so far.
First off, not enjoying driving a goldfish bowl driving, my personality is introvert and i find it uncomfortable having everyone starring all the time. Plus motorway driving is a nightmare, if i drive in the fast lane i get loads of cars undertaking me just so all the kids in the back can have a look. Or when i am in one of the other lanes cars overtake me for a look then once they have had a blimp slow back down forcing me to go past them again. :stupid: Pain in the arse on longish drives. :booty:
Onto driving the car, this has been a battle, Its a fair bit faster than my GTI but also a lot harder to drive. I thought i had taken a leap too far at one point, after the hedgerow grim reaper appeared on a tight bend, fortunately the car has way more talent than me. You have to show it complete respect 100% of the time, it wont accept anything less.
I wrongly assumed that with all the extra grip and feel it would be easy to drive, you have to man handle it round the bends and i am even contemplating buying driving gloves.
The feed back when driving fast is sublime, when you get it right and pick your lines the car just melts into your arms and tells you what all the bits are doing, very hard to explain but you get a warm glow after a series of fast bends. :driver:
I have been waiting for my quieter zorst for a few weeks, should be here this week, so i can now do a few track days without getting kicked off track. Also got some engine mount inserts ready to go on.
While waiting for my new bits i decided to give my garage a makeover. Electrics have been installed which involved me digging a path up and passing my power through 3 of my neighbours garages. Lots of new paint and pics to go on the walls of the Old lotus F1 car that mine pays homage too.
I also cam across a few nice bits to keep with the car for posterity.
First is a brochure from the weekend at Brands Hatch which Emerson Fitipaldi won, this win is what my particular car commemorates. And luckily enough JPS also sponsored the event that weekend, so there is lots of pics of the type 72.

Then i luckily found this, it's a picture of the car just after it had won the race, and has been signed by Fitipaldi.

Also got a hardback sales brochure.

Few more bits coming in the next month or two. :happy2:
-
You? Introvert? :signLOL: TBH I can imagine after a while all the attention just gets boring and you just wanna cruise along. Don't make'em hate your car, dude.
Have you managed to get air? :driver:
Would love to see this car in the flesh.
Some of your pics don't work. Please fix this as it demeans your post.
-
.
You'll get used to all the attention, TC - Easy to ignore after a while (except when a hot chick says "Niiice car!"). Just pretend you're a rock star and enjoy it. It's actually all flattering. Nothing wrong in having your ego stroked occasionally. Just smile and give 'em a thumbs-up.
I'm not surprised about the characteristics of the car which you describe - Far too uncomfortable for an old timer like me but it's the compromise you make for the rest of it. Even Ferrari's aren't very comfortable, Porsches are cramped, etc, etc.
Enjoy! Stunning ride! :notworthy:
-
Would love to see this car in the flesh.
Private, naked viewing. Good idea Stealth, I'm in.

Loving the car :happy2:
Although I think a video of the car at idle, revving and then a cross country drive to experience the sound would be in call for :popcornsoda:

Would love to see this car in the flesh.
Oh dear, this is gonna go so off tangent :signLOL:

Not really. The first two have the Flickr logo and "unavailable" signs but you can click on them. I wish you could find a nice example of the classic and have your car next to it. Would be awesome IMO. Are any of them still knocking about?

Okay but please keep your hands to yourself. In fact, keep yourself to yourself just in case you have any funny ideas.

Loving the car and the updates on hedge row grim reaper, and the collection of memorabilia you are amassing, I was hoping to see some more pictures (I think I spotted a nice on in the thread you posted about flicker) a subtle view of the 72 emblem!

such a lovely car, i had the option of an exige or elise when i sold my Z4 but i wanted something with 4/5 seats.
your kinda making me regret it now!
Joe.

I only live about 45 mins away from the Evo triangle, and have made 2 visits already. And i can confirm that the corners of my mouth were tickling my ears.
The 2ublar exhaust landed at Top cat towers today, after a fair wait. This is the only zorst for Lotus, there is a couple of other brands but non of them are a patch on 2ublar. This one is called a H2 GT3 and is quietened down version for track days, which should be interesting. To be honest i cant wait to get it on the car, although the sound now is epic, it is just to loud and the milltek like drone is tiresome.

The engine mount inserts will be getting fitted at the same time, these make a big difference to the feel of the car with only a slight vibration on idle. Lots of Exiges and Elises have gear change issues which Lotus stuggle to fix. My car unfortunately has a bit of a graunch when cold going from second to third so this should help or cure the problem.

Also getting a TRD cup intake fitted, this doesn't do a great deal in terms of performance but they sound amazing with the supercharger. :driver:

Fitted it today all by myself. :innocent: Took about 3 hours longer than it would have taken your average Monkey but got there in the end.
The Exige's main weak spot is engine cooling. The only way to get air to the intercooler is through the roof scoop, the side scoops are mainly redundant so i might add some tubing to these at a later date. The bloody ECU really retards the timing after 2 or 3 laps so this should help a lot. The other option is Charge cooling which is very costly and heavy too.
The forge one is a bit heavier than stock, but i have some rather nice aluminum pipes coming from America to replace the Lotus industrial ones currently fitted. :stupid: a 2 KG saving just on 2 small pipes.

looks great mate
ps did Joe write that for you, looks like his spelling

....And a very nice shot indeed :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:
Looks very natural although on looking at it more you then notice the star filters effects on the 3 dash lights < Very cool touch. It's beautifully lit without looking overdone in a studio. 3 hours to set up the lighting and 3 minutes to shoot the pics? The green wall is a lucky touch < A colour heavily part of the Lotus identity.
Personally I'm not keen on Lotus cars but yours is very much an exception :notworthy:
I know I've said it before, but now you've got the camera gear (and of course the Mac) you're photography talents have really emerged :happy2:
-
I doubt that's got a star filter? Just a tripod and a long shutter speed?
It's a very nice shot
-
No filter used robin, those stars are caused by the lens aperture blades, and using a small aperture. The number of points relates to the number of aperture blades (i think)
-
^
Yeah, I should have written star effects (a filter would have probably applied to the whole image). My excuse is that I posted this in a hurry before breakfast :P
-
Awesome little car, the pic's don't do it justice, but I won't be going in it again, they aren't built for the larger racer
-
 does that mean it's a midgetmobile?
-
Well once Johno forced his way in he looked like a giant sat their, knocked about 2 seconds off my 0-60 time with his big bones. :rolleye: Then SteveP decided to get in. Wasted my time showing him the technique as all rules went out the window. He literally could not fit through the door aperture. :scared: He kind of folded in half then arsed his way in, leaving his head on his cock and one leg still trapped out side, being starved of blood quickly. Thought the clam would split. :rolleye: :P
-
:signLOL: :signLOL: :signLOL:
-
Be more interested to hear how you got him out, did it involve vaseline and a tin-opener?
-
Very good, TC! :congrats:
I imagine the bucket bolsters have been knackered a bit?
Would love to see this car in the flesh - just too good. You need to get some VAG Lotus babes and make a special edition calendar! And then have a party with the girls.

stealth my gold and black lycra suit is on order :happy2:

Finally got chance to fit my new intercooler pipes to go with the forge cooler. I dont know why but lotus decided to use some pipes that were obviously left over from a 1970's Russian nuke plant. These new ones are from a company in America who specialise in ultra light parts for the Exige. They weigh a good few pounds less and they kindly anodised them in gold for me to keep with the theme. Also found out that the hatch opener doesn't fit with the forge cooler so had to buy a really light one too. Ofcourse in gold. :happy2:

Came across this chap in America who does digital artwork, Asked him if he could do me a piece for my garage refurb of my Type 72, and he came up with this. Very impressed with it, i gave him a loose brief and he came up with exactly what i had in mind. :pomppomp: it is on fine quality print paper and is quite big. A decent frame will cost more than the artwork.

Just started some Ghey winter mods while it is mostly hibernating. First job eliminating all the silver screws and detailing on the outside of the bodywork silver looks out of place on a black car. So still waiting for a couple of bolts to arrive, but they are all being replaced with black bolts and washers apart from the petrol cap.
The pertrol cap trim is silver and it doesn't look right to my eye.
So from this

Next Ghey mod. Lotus kindly gave me a few Vauxhall Astra bits. :indifferent: The indicator and wiper stalks have been replaced with some nice Billet alu pieces.

Next up is a Scroth profi harness. The probax seats in my car are just a fibreglass mould but amazingly comfortable none the less. On track days though with the stock suspension you are riding the sides round bends. :driver: This harness is the business, 3 inch wide straps, very easy to adjust and MOT passable.

And finally for now a baffled sump. This is a non sexy mod and bloody expensive for no thrill. :sad1: But some bigger upgrades are coming in the spring so if i dont fit a few mods like this then i could easily loose my engine to oil and fuel starvation once the G-forces increase.

I have been saving my pennies for these over the last few months.
My first track day in the Exige went ok but the car suffered from understeer quite badly. So after some investigation and after taking advice, the next track day at Oulton i dropped the tyre pressures down to the cold readings and this worked a treat, 90% on the understeer disappeared. However there was still a lot of body roll and the standard bilstein suspension was a bit to soft for hard track work.
To add to this i had a few passenger laps in a S1 Exige that had a Nitron suspension and this had a profound effect on me, i didn't even know any car could grip like it let alone an everyday Exige well set up. :jumpmove:
So i had to get a kit for mine, if this turns out to be half as good as the one i had a go of, then i will have a proper track weapon.
This Nitrons latest kit with a new wider 46mm body. I only went for one way adjustable as it is quite difficult setting up 2 and 3 way. These will be straightforward, just reach under while in the paddock and add a few clicks until they start to feel how you want them. They are the track day-pro version and as such will need refurbing every 10,000 miles or so. This sounds a lot but it is only if you want to keep them in tip top condition. All shocks/coilovers performance degrade as much, but in most applications people cant notice the drop off in performance.

Oh God!!
Seriously, if there was a text book explaining the perfect way to mod a Lotus then you're following it word-for-word!!!!!!
-
Nitron's all fitted. Geo and corner weighting all done. it is a fat little Lotus, it weighed in at 920kg. :driver:
The ride quality for the roads is so much better than the Bilsteins they replaced. most of the tram lining has gone and the car does not try and pitch me into the curb anymore if i dare stop concentrating. Just need to do some testing on track now to find my best settings. :happy2:
-
  setup for the bath tub :notworthy:

My car is already for this season's track days now. Had some Nitron woes but all fixed now fingers crossed. Just had an early service with uprated brake pads and fluid and fitted my baffled sump + oil chnage which was expensive as the car holds 9 litres now.
A couple of new A048's are on the way, so bring on those bends. :driver:
-
Oh TC, I love this little motor
Be great to see it on track this year sometime. :happy2:
-
You should see it at some point John, i plan to do at least six track days this year. I am resisting all urges for more power. all spare cash is going on driver training and maintenance. I might try and add a bit of lightness at some point in the summer. These little cars are so capable when driven by someone who knows what they are doing my modding money is better spent on the driver this year. :happy2:

Ok so i came over all Gay today and went topless. I have to say it looks awkward and just wrong with the roof off, but i didnt care as i had a wonderful time zipping down the country lanes with my two year old. I might even do a track day or two with it off if i can catch a dat like today. :pomppomp:

It is a pain in the arse in traffic Monte, heavy clutch and steering, vibrations and rattles a plenty, but as you say, on track it just comes alive and feels like a race car/ go-kart.

Would having the roof off on track affect the aerodynamics?

You doing any TD with LoT?
I'm booked for Le Mans in August with them :)

I did a couple last year with them and hope to do at least 3 or 4 with them this year. They are reasonably priced and nearly all Lotus cars. Everyone was mucking in helping each other out in the pits, which was great. :happy2:

340R - they look like fun!
-
I did a factory tour a few months back and they were building 4 of the GTE for China. They looked amazing 2 of them were just full satin carbon and the other two had like some sort of see through satin paint over the carbon. They had to drag me away from them. :notworthy: £130,000 though. :rolleye:

Everybody tells me that they are the best Lotus for driving feel. I think they weigh between 460 and 560 Kg. :happy2: You can also buy one and lose very little dosh if any. :happy2:

I know, :sad1: I was supposed to be working in Kent this weekend, but it has been cancelled, so could have gone. I do have a track day in a couple of weeks with the LOT gang at Hethel though. :pomppomp: It is the first ever track day there. It is normally only for testing, but i am guessing they are skint and need to get some money in.

Is your next bath tub an original Lotus 7 ?:
