Title: Puddle lights
Post by: stealthwolf on March 20, 2009, 07:23:47 am
Does anyone have these installed?

Would appreciate pics of the effect + of the unit.

Anyone installed it themselves?

Looking into it but don't know if it's feasible.

Not worth it mate, low level yellow lights that barely light up the errr puddles.

The VWR Golf has them fitted, and I think they do a good job.  I started to look into retro fitting them, but didnt get too far due to work taking over again.

Would be very interested in sorting this.

Flora has them on my old car and I for one think there great  :happy2: The bulbs should be easy enough to upgrade.

Definately well worth having, they do light up the floor better than I thought they would and with an LED bulb upgrade would be fantastic! :happy2:

theres another thread somewhere about this, iirc the parts alone are over £400, then you need some wiring and programing, its something i would like, but not worth that hassle unless someone has a simple way of doing it

^^ deffo easier. Tap into the wiring on the red light and dot in some LEDs along the bottom of the door panel.

I've got the puddle lights, they're ok I suppose but need a bulb upgrade for sure - and I just can't be bothered taking them apart.

I've upgraded the bulbs in mine with 'Xenon' white sidelight bulbs - easy and worthwhile improvement  :happy2:

....

Are we talking about the 'downlighters' in the base of the wing mirrors?

My 06-build GTI has them already. My dealer friend used his VAS to extend their "On" time for me. Very useful for me to see that I don't accidentally damage my car with my ramps in the dark.

How easy is it to change the bulbs to LED's?

running them under the door rather than the wing mirrors means they would only be 50% effective. puddle lights by their definition are designed to light the area outside the car.

Being on the mirrors, coming to the car or getting out of, the lights flood the ground. if they were under the doors then they would only be effective when you get out of the car and not as you approach it to get in.

for that reason it would be OEM mirrors with LED's or nuthin for me  :innocent:

when i ordered my car i decided i wouldn't need them, now i want them because i haven't got them. In a year or so I will be selling the mrs's EOS and that has got them, wing mirror swap and all's good  :happy2:

Been looking at doing this myself but think the ones on the Skoda Superb are better...and they are LED's aswell.  I think you could easily retrofit these in the golf cos the wing mirror on both cars are the same, its just the base plate that is different.

After looking under my wing mirror there is the plastic cap that covers where a puddle light would be, surely there would be a way of just utilising this and buying only the necessary parts rather than spending upwards of £200 for the privaledge of having these?

Perhaps I'm talking at cross purposes, but my VW dealer says it's easy to swop bulbs to LED on the Mk5 GTI/Ed30 - You just swing the mirror tops forward and reveal access to the bulbs.

HTH

There is space in the mirror to more or less put a street lamp  seriously you could buy some thing like a small vanity light like in the sun visor ones and put that under the wing mirror and buy a LED for that you would just need to retro fit all that then. Ive got a spare wing mirror and vanity lights from when I changed my roof lining and all the vanity lights I will have a go and see what happens.

These numbers are for a US spec car but if you go with them to your VW dealer he can get the appropriate UK variants.

1K1 857 507 BT 9B9 - Driver's Mirror, power, heated, puddle lights (2005.5 Jetta)
1K1 857 508 BR 9B9 - Passenger's Mirror, power, heated, puddle lights (2005.5 Jetta)

They come with harness IIRC and all version door controllers can use them, just need to change the setting in VCDS.
If you want door card lights you will require:

(2) 1K0 947 411 A - Door Entry Light
(2) 1J0 971 972 - 2-Pin Connector
(1) 000 979 019 – Wire Set
(1) 000 979 018 – Wire Set (one wire is enough for two doors)

Again IIRC these can be used without a new door controller being required.

I have the puddle lights built into the underside of the wing mirror. They seem to stay on as long as the coming/leaving home light function and you can alter the time that the lights stay on through the computer.
Very impressed as it is the sort of thing you only expect on hihg end exec cars.

Do you know if these were std on the Pirelli

Thanks

I have just successfully had electric folding heated wing mirrors with puddle lights fitted by my m8 @ vw,the only thing that needed changing where the window/door regulators and obviously the mirrors themselves, there was also an extra wiring loom on the back of each of the mirrors that my m8 thinks might be for auto dimming mirrors
no coding needed just a straight plug and play :jumpmove: :jumpmove: :jumpmove:
These are parts i used with my original wiring already on my 2006 golf gt tdi
Regulators are drivers 1K0 959 701L passengers 1K0 959 702G window switch 3C8 959 565A XSH not sure about the mirrors
I take no responsibility for anyone attempting this with the part numbers i have given, these are the part numbers that worked for my golf however these may not work on your car, please ask your local vw parts for the right part numbers for your car please :happy2:
cheers golfman

Ps i would also like to thank steveP for finding them on ebay :happy2:
and also darren for all his help with the part number of door switch  :happy2:

All folding mirrors have that functionality IIRC

You need to make sure the mirror switch is left or right mirror adjust setting (can't remember which) for it to work  :happy2:

VCDS is needed to activate the fold down reverse function Scott if steve checks that its ticked out on his I think its in the convenience module?  if its ticked on Steves then you should be able to get it to work.
