Title: Aftermarket Tints
Post by: Bernhard30 on July 09, 2011, 10:36:47 am
Got a white, 3 door, Eddy and have always avoided any thought of privacy tints on the car.
Was worried it would make the car a bit too chavtastic imo.

However since our daughter arrived in Nov and Mrs 'Bernhard' changed her Mk5 Gt TDi in for it's bigger cousin an A4, that car has got me wondering about tints. Purely from a Cool (temps) point of view.

This A4 avant has tinted privacy at the rear and so we are told it's sunglasses type glass rather than a film applied, either way the temps on a hot day are noticeably cooler than in the front, so they seem to work from a UV & heat aspect.

So would getting rear tints put on my Golf have the same effect, would it lower rear cabin temps on hot days.

Anyone got thoughts or experience of this? Thanks guys.

Could always get some of the privacy blinds. Lots of reviews in the reviews thread. Hey cost about £80 for 2 rear ones and 2 that cover the rear view wondow. Makes it a lot cooler inside.
Think they are called autoblinds or something like. Sell them on eBay too.

I was looking at getting tints on my car a while back but I decided to go for the shades & I couldn't can't rate them enough.

Very Cherry also wrote a review on them in the product reviews section.

Now they are expensive but personally I think worth every penny.

* cheaper than tints
* able to remove whenever you like
* preserves my OEM blue tints
* does pretty much the exact same as tints

so overall  :happy2:

I got them here:

Blinds for me too... Same reason didn't like the stick on roller blinds in the back for shade for the little one...

I had tints on my car but had them removed as the rears looked rubbish with the gray lines around the edges where the tint won't stick properly. I'm thinking of buying some of these privacy shades but the only thing putting me off is the rear is two pieces. Surely it can't be hard to make it one piece. Can someone please post an image of what the rear looks like from the outside? Thanks in advance.

Looks a good bit of kit, so do the wind deflectors too!, would also stop the rain falling in off the rooftop on first setting off after a rainy morning.  :happy2:

I'll try and get some sorted 2 mora.  Good thing with the 5 door version is they get rid of the 'helicopter effect' when you open a window

Cheers.  There doesn't seem to be a negative with these except for maybe the rear one being 2 pieces

The only problem I saw with these was that the rear view was very limited, almost like the  rear view mirror was on full dip all the time.

I know what you're saying that was my thoughts before I bought them.  But after a while I've got used to them.

I had a set of the blinds for my vRS estate, I was really unhappy with the fit so I sent them back.  I'd like to get tints for the same reason as the OP but my concern is on a black estate car I think it may look like a van or a hearse!!  :scared:

Thanks for the pics nads1_uk :happy2:. The top one is just what I was looking for. Doesn't look to bad the black line better than having a gray line all around the windows! Think i'll order some soon.

Cheers for the info about fitted blinds guys.

Just out of interest does anyone know if tinting the windows with film keeps out UV and heat as I'm still curious as to whether they have that effect. They blinds do seem to advertise they do these two things (UV & heat), so would think the window film would but wondered what people have experienced.

Thanks

My ED 30 has the factory rear tints & i don't think it's any cooler on a hot day than my last mk5 GTI was. They both are black cars tho so don't know if thats why?. Looks good.

Well as i have tinted the back 3 windows of my car for the kids, the tinter did say that factory tint do not have any UV protection as it is material within the glass that gives it just a dark privacy look, and you really need a clear UV tint applied if you want the UV protection, which could explain why GeneHunt post could be correct.

I may be barking up the wrong tree in terms of UV. And what factory tints do, just know it feels a bit lower in temp.

@MANC01
Can I ask, as you've had the rears tinted by applying film is the rear seat area a bit cooler in hot weather?
Would like to know if it works that way or whether the cabin shape of the A4 Avant (which is white) may have been helping the greenhouse effect.

Thanks

On a sunny day the heat i get from direct sunlight through the back windows is not as much as the front which have not been tinted.

In terms of general temp inside, im sure it will equal out in the end but might take a bit longer than having no tints, as i have not tinted the fronts, so will eventually get warmed up from the front of the car. But main thing is when it is sunny the kids dont get burnt at the back! Also looks OK on a black car, as mine are 50% and not too blacked out.

Cheers for that info.

One final question, does the film you've had fitted cut out the glare, lower the rear temp and cut UV rays then?
I'm guessing yes to all three as you mentioned "the kids won't burn".

Thanks

i had tints done on my car pretty much after i bought the car as i had my 6 month old son in the back and the sun was way too bright for him and it made a massive change to the glare in the car but not sure about the temps
without tints

Yes good quality film should do those 3 things above.

Heres a pic of the tints 50%, its not too dark, also i have the beige leather so looks even less tinted. Might do fronts with 75% when i get the money and find an insurance company that doesnt charge the earth for it!
