My father in law wants the above diesel but i reckon as he does less than 20k a year he will be better off with the 1.4 TSI.
Has anyone driven both? Does the diesel feel quicker as more torque?
Way I see it unless doing high mileage you wont see the benefit to your pocket by running the diesel as yes better mpg but about 4p a litre more than 95 RON isn't it?

It's the eternal question. First of all, drivning style will make a difference. Although mpg is usually better in diesels, they are usually more expensive to buy (overall market, not a VAG specific observation) and to maintain. Short runs cause problems in modern diesels which have DPF (diesel particulate filter) fitted. The filter catches smut & soot, and on long runs, is heated red-hot to burn off the residue. With short runs, there is no opportunity to do this, and the filter becomes blocked.
So although fuel economy is usually better, initial outlay and servicing is more expensive, and on the whole, modern diesels are often less reliable than petrol engines due to these emissions foibles. However, diesel residuals are higher because of their perceived advantage, which can offset this.

If you ask me it makes sense to get the TDI no matter how many miles you drive as they tend to have far better resale values. The 1.4 twincharged engined Golfs suffer very heavy depreciation. It's a different story if you get a massive discount I guess, but then again you only get massive discounts off hard to move stock which doesn't bode well for resale values.
The twincharged engine has enough torque but it doesn't 'feel' torquey. It has been described as like driving an elastic band powered car and I'd agree with this as the whole power delivery seems to swell the more you wind up the engine!

To get the most out of the TSI you have to put super unleaded in it which makes the fuel price the same.
-
Diesel.
No power in 3rd from the petrol. I dont see the point in a petrol engine at all unless its some kind of performance engine like the GTI etc etc.
-
the TDI will have DPF issues, if hes gonna be doing short journeys buy the 1.4, end of!
-
mmmm, thanks for comments chaps. more supporters for the soot chucker and yes he will be doing short runs so i wonder what dpf isues he will get. will show him this thread and let him make his mind up...
-
Dpf issues only if it's town.. Start stop journeys I've a 170 for sale and no Dpf issues you'll notice it running lumpy and tickovers up to 1000rpm but just take it on the motorway for a blow and everything's ok again I've had mine over 12mths and no probs ..... Just some motorway driving-- which we all do-- is all it needs my opinion is it's a cracking car and getting over 540 to a tank and over 50 to the gallon :driver:

Been looking for a Golf GT for a while and I have test driven the TDi 140 and 170, I didn't think there was a massive difference in power between the diesel models. As it will probably do less than 8k a year the Tsi was also an option but to be honest after test driving one I was disappointed to say the least.
Imo, if you want a petrol Golf go for the Gti.
-
I would go PD170. Get the dpf taken out and remap to suit, 230bhp and better mpg.
-
I think it will need a lot more than a DPF delete and remap to reach 230bhp!
-
Buy the 140pd TDI the others have no great benefit to them over and above the 140 golf, he will not regret it one bit and come resale it will sell better than the 170dpf pd and the 170tsi 1.4
The golf can if wanted be remapped to over 170hp anyway without so much has any other mods to the car,
Darren

yeah will get him to look at the 140 ps version then

I drove a 170 TSI and it felt as flat as a pancake!
