What is the difference between the version B & C of this head unit? I've currently got the version C in the Scirocco and have never used the unit in the Mk5 Golf. There seems to a difference in price, is that because version C is LED?
Found some on eBay;

Thanks for the confirmation bud

For info if your MK5 is pre March 2007 you may get battery drain problems with the version C...

Hi Matt, yes I have just read that in a monster thread regarding the definitions of the A, B & C variants of the RNS510.
At this stage I couldn't tell you the exact month of production as I haven't picked my Ed30 up from VW yet, this Thursday  :jumpmove: :pomppomp: :happy2:. It's a 57 plate.
Are there any people on here who can fit them? Once I purchase one, I'd be very interested to watch and be the on site tea boy :signLOL: I've never pulled one out nor have the correct tools to do so, so for the first time I'd rather seek the guidance of someone who knows what they are doing.
I've currently got a Scirocco TDI 140PS and that has, it seems, the C version, which I think is wicked. However, am I right in saying that you can get a LCD & LED C version?

Actually, the physical fitting can be done by most folk with a bit of patience. It's straightforward.

to start you off.
You may need an aerial adaptor if you're starting with a second gen head unit. See:

The Partnumber is 7L6 051 551 and having asked my local dealer, they catagorically stated no such part existed. Having found the above link I went back and made the parts flunky look stupid (not difficult).

It is really easy to fit, dont be afraid to do it yourself. Probably take 30 mins and Im pretty sure you will need the aerial adaptor.
I just stuck the gps antenna underneath the top climate cover on the dash (plenty of room on left or right hand side) and reception is fine.

Cheers Matt, I'll bear that in mind :happy2:

Your welcome, Mav. Mine was self-fitted, no VCDS coding necessary. And by the way, the aerial adaptor is about £28 for two bits of wire

Cool. So if I buy one off eBay brand new, for example, will it need coding or will it just literally plug 'n' play? Yeah, when I read the installation thread you posted and saw the cost of the two lengths of cable I thought it was abit expensive like, how much is VW tax these days, damn!
-
VCDS means you can tell the car it's there, so it comes up on the highline dash and you can use the mfsw. If you don't have those, you can probably get away without the need to code it.
Fitting is easy but trying to do it withouth breaking any dash clips is a bit more challenging. :innocent:

Based on that Stealth it will need coding then, as I have the MFSW set up. How do I go about that then? Dealers or does someone possess the software to code the headunit to the car?
Gracias.

Have a look in the VCDS Register thread. Hopefully there's someone close enough to help out.

I think Eddie-NL is your man for the Nolfolk area

Sorry to hijack this thread but I was just wondering, after reading the above, if I bought an RNS510 off ebay would I need a new canbus or have it set up with VCDS? My gti is a 2005 manual with the midline dash. Also which version? Is C the newest therefore better? or does it really matter?
Thanks.
-
If your canbus is K or earlier, you'll need a new one. It's highly likely that a car of this age will have this early canbus. C versions have an LCD screen, you can tell them by the 'star' button on the top right of the unit. Earlier versions have a speaker icon on the button.
-
How do we know what canbus we have?
*this could prove to be a v.expensive reply for me*
-
It's a VCDS scan, mate.
Early 2007 and earlier usually needs a canbus switch. I think Kalu was talking about being able to flash the software on it rather than physically changing the unit. PM him & ask, he's a top guy, very helpful.
