Concentrate on the part number and forget the D some people will also drop the 6 for a 0 but as long as they are visually the right clocks and have the 972 on the end you will be fine.  If you read my build thread you will see that cosmetically you can change the front panel and also the dial cards so farenheit coolant temp can be changed to your celsius card from your midline and kph can be changed to mph fairly easily.

We all know that some parts department are full of muppets, they will also charge you an arm and a leg for a cluster as they are an exchange item so you will have a hefty surcharge awaiting the return of a compatible unit.  If you go to hazydays they will also take your old cluster away for this reason.

here is a picture of the label on my US highline it has the same immo as yours determined by the 972 part number the E code at the end will determine that it is US spec and has Fahrenheit coolant card but otherwise its UK spec.

As mentioned earlier in this thread you could get a german cluster and convert the whole thing to UK spec with the bit from your current midline  :happy2:

I wrote up a how to in my build thread here

I imported them from the US james, via a friend I have in New York as most breakers wont send out side the US, but lots of US cars had highline clusters so you can pick them up for $75 add $30 shipping to someone you know then $55 for postage across the atlantic followed by £20 customs and your still short of what ones go for in the UK but you have a lot of work to do and pain with US ebay suppliers.  To get round them not letting you buy if your address is outside of the US just change your ebay address as well as I asked the first time and they removed the cluster from ebay!  :fighting2:

No. If your midline cluster part is 962, you need a 972 high line unit. There's a sticky on here that tells you, but basically your 961 needs 971, 962 needs 972, 963 needs 973 ...... You get the idea

Here are some 972 clocks (but at crazy prices!) http://cgi.ebay.de/org-VW-Golf-5-V-GTI-Kombiinstrument-Tacho-1K6920972A-/220742864902?pt=DE_Autoteile&hash=item33654cd006 (http://cgi.ebay.de/org-VW-Golf-5-V-GTI-Kombiinstrument-Tacho-1K6920972A-/220742864902?pt=DE_Autoteile&hash=item33654cd006) & http://cgi.ebay.de/VW-Golf-V-Kombiinstrument-1K0920972A-/180687351155?pt=DE_Autoteile&hash=item2a11ce2d73 (http://cgi.ebay.de/VW-Golf-V-Kombiinstrument-1K0920972A-/180687351155?pt=DE_Autoteile&hash=item2a11ce2d73)

Be aware that if you get clocks natively in MPH but not British spec (from eBay.de or eBay.com for instance), they'll display Fahrenheit not Celsius, as well as text and not pictures for some items, such as ABS and BRAKE. I just swapped the inserts with my midline clocks, but it is purely cosmetic.

If you buy clocks natively in KPH then you'd need to buy Lockwood dial inserts to convert it to MPH, as the scaling is different - you couldn't just put your existing speed inserts into the cluster.

Demon666 - you could buy those 971 clocks and fit them, but the clusters ending x70/71 need the wiper stalk with trip computer button, and the older style of steering wheel controls to get full functionality (if I remember correctly). The x72 onward units don't need the trip button on stalk, and work with the newer button layout on a MFSW.

(I put a set of clocks into a members car and he went from 961 to 872 clocks - he's had no issues).
