Title: Facebook
Post by: Boothy on July 14, 2011, 08:07:33 pm
There is a thread going on in random chat I think with regards to Facebook and people wanting to become friends with everyone on here.

How about a forum Facebook page? Would be easy to set up, minimal maintenance etc (even I could do it I suppose)?

One tip: it's better that it's a group page, not a fan page i.e. you click a join button as opposed to a like button. With the fan pages it's harder to see who else has joined than with a group.

Hope that makes sense?

TBH anybody can set up a Group it doesn't have to be the Mods.

But then we could end up with 10.

I set up one for an old pub I used to frequent in Maidenhead, took about 5 minutes.

I'm happy to set one up but only with the permission of one of the mods. Seems only fair really.

Yes I think it is.

I did one for a trip to Le Mans for me and mates and we were all admin but I will double check.

Steve is it ok if we use the banner?

Just looking into it now as there is the pages option as well.

Businesses use them to communicate with their fans/users so not sure its ideal.

Think we just need a basic groups page don't we? Will have a look at the options.

Looks like we can do the multiple admin.....

A Page can have multiple administrators. Each Page administrator will need to have their own business account or personal account. Every admin can manage the Page from their own Facebook account using the "Page Manager" application that will appear in the left hand column of the Applications section once they become an admin for a Page. Every admin has equal access to and the same abilities as the other admins for a Page.

I think it will still need just one person to create the group though and you have previous experience if you would like the honor? I'm happy to sort it if not though bud.

Looking further into it I think a PAGE is going to be better than a GROUP......

How are Pages different from groups? Which one should I create?
Pages allow real organizations, businesses, celebrities and brands to communicate broadly with people who like them. Pages may only be created and managed by official representatives.

Groups provide a closed space for small groups of people to communicate about shared interests. Groups can be created by anyone.

It looks like with Groups you have to invite people and then they have access to the site? Where as with a Page you set it up and people can join. Surely it ain't gonna be used for discussions etc as thats going to take away from the forum I think?

Whats your take on it?

As I've already said, in my opinion, a Page is not as good as a Group, as you can't see who else has clicked the Like button, whereas you can bring up a list of the other members on a Group page that has a Join button. The r32oc forum has a Page and it's really irritating not being able to see who else has clicked the Like button!

If the option is there on a Page to have all the Likers visible to the others then go for it, otherwise I can't see the point.

I think Boothy had a good point though with the discussion issue.

It is done!

http://www.facebook.com/groups/145142192235658/

If you want to join its invite only unless its deemed too much hard work keeping up or people moan.

I say invite, you click to join and myself or Boothy ok it so maybe drop us a PM with your name and either me or Boothy will do so.

I am not sure that it is going to work so lets see how it goes.

Feedback mucho welcome.

to have discussions on the FB group you will loose traffic from this site....

I tend to use our facebook page as a way of promoting the site with news which contains links to the forum, that way your showing people whats happening and where they can find the information...

to set up a group and have discussions within that group you may as well close the forum and run the group only as your taking away good content and activity from this place and using the social platform...

not sure why its a locked group also? surely you'd want to promote the site openly rather than in secret to gain new members...

I can quote too but it still doesn't answer anything  I raised?

Its a valid point which is why I raised it initially anf left the decision with the mods. The site was initially restricted until we had time to research the privacy settings etc and can be changed if need be.

As for taking content away from the forum then its a definate pos
sibilty and potentially one that can be solved by each member. If they begin using it like the forum then maybe it should be stopped, I dunno? The idea behind the site was so that people could see other members face to face and know a little about them.

Ultimately the decision is for the mods to make and the group can always be changed to page if need be. Myself and h4rdy just set this up to help out, with the blessing of the mods not to ruin what is an awsome forum.

Mods —-what's your opinion? Maybe put it to a vote?

Maybe the group can be changed to only allow posting by yhe admin staff. Then iy could just be used for say, events and photo albums with the details being emailled to myself or h4rdy in order for us to post it. That way it would restrict banter etc?

You could argue there is not point in having the page if you block it to that extent.

Maybe we should be asking what we want from the site? If its for discussions then is it really required? Surely the forum is for discussions?

Don't get me wrong, I like the facebook group BUT the last thing I want to do is ruin the forum.
Title: Re: Facebook
Post by: simonp on August 02, 2011, 04:29:39 pm
But it could enhance it. There could be a good thread on here and you could point people on fb towards it. I also think restricting membership of the Group page to invite only is a mistake, as it could alienate noobs who find the site via the facebook page. I certainly won't be joining a group where I have to ask to be let in!

I feel there are distinct differences to FB and the forum and the content and discussions will naturally differ. I cant see there will be any issue now or in the future, but rest assured I will keep a close eye on it.

Keep up the good work chaps!  :happy2:
