Title: Side Skirts Cost - Am I being quoted too much?
Post by: martinbickley on July 22, 2011, 03:09:19 pm
Looking to add side skirts to my GT.

Emailed my local dealer and got the following quote: -

1K4 853 859B9B9 (Left Side Skirt) - £37.00

1K4 853 860B9B9 (Right Side Skirt) - £37.00

1K0 853 543 (Support Strip) - £12.00

1K0 853 544 (Support Strip) - £12.00

1K0 853 493 (Side Skirt Adaptor) - £4.00

N 10354602 (Screw) - £0.30

Total £115.20

Prices include VAT.

Do these prices seem right or am I being quoted too much?

Thanks in advance

Martin

Thanks for the replies.

I had a look at this post and thought I may be paying too much.

The prices on the link are not including VAT, so with the additional 20% your prices aren't far off, I would guess the stealers have put the prices up a bit as well.
Also bare in mind that if you just bond the skirts then you don't need the support strips.
The other alternative is R32 or ED30 skirts which are primered ready for paint but they will cost you in excess of £200 just for the skirts.

EDIT: You could try a Trade Parts Specialist as it may be a bit cheaper from them........

Am I right in thinking that the skirts do not actually clip to the support strips, they just rest on top of them?

That's well cheap! I was quoted over £150 for both skirts and fitting kit! Where are you based?

Had similar quotes from VW Stockport and VW Wrexham.

dude  i wouldn't bother with anything other than the skirts. i bonded mine as they fit much better and you not need to drill endless holes in your car

I just read your mod thread and loving it.
You say to just bond the side skirts... what exactly did you use? I was going to get the fitting kit. Also the rear bottom GTi valance you fitted was that a direct replacement or did you have to modify the upper part of the bumper to fit it? The previous owner reversed and dented the rear valance so need a new one anyway.

A fellow Briskodian has fitted the skirts to his mk2 vRS by just bonding them and they look excellent.  :happy2:

The skirts are no different on a 3 door to a  5 door.
And no, I don't think you do need the fitting kit, just buy some bonding/adhesive and you should be fine. (also 4 screws that go underneath and in the wheel arches.

Do the underneath screws go in to the body?

No you use the side skirt adaptors listed in the first post. You need four of them and the clip into some holes in the chassis once you remove a rubber bung. You then screw into a pre drilled hole to secure the skirt from the bottom. I then used some bonding adhesive, ran a bead all the way along the length of the skirt below the sticky foam strip, removed the tape on the sticky foam strip and done. Still on!

Smith Knight Fay in Stockport have confirmed to me that code 1K4 is for a 5 Door MK5.

You might want to confirm the same with your local dealer before ordering.

Try these?

http://www.eurowagens.com/en/vw/golf-5-jetta-5/mouldings/oem-door-sills-vw-golf-5-gti-set-1.html

Not sure if they include all the bits, but by the sounds of it you don't need all the fitting kit etc anyway - if it worked for Demon666 then i'd go along with that.

This is just for the skirts, cheaper to buy from the dealer.

I just used the skirts and adapters which plug into the bottom of the car.

The adapters hold the skirts in place at the bottom and stop them flexing.

Did you use any adhesive as well?

Any pics Martin

Have put the pic above on.

No drilling and no adhesive other than the sticky strip already on the skirt.

Its screws in at both sides and also screws into the adapters at the bottom so its held on pretty good.

If it ever did start to come away at the top I would just use a bit of adhesive then.

The support strips which I didn't use have a lip on the top which the skirts tuck into, but as these need to be glued/screwed into the car I decided I may as well just glue the skirts if I ever need to.

Nice work buddy, so to recap, you ordered 2 x side skirts part numbers: 1K4 853 859 B9B9 (Left) 1K4 853 860 B9B9 (Right) 4 x Adaptors 1K0 853 493 and 4 x Screws N10354602?
Will you colour code them?
