Title: SSD vs HDD Stats
Post by: vRS Carl on July 28, 2011, 09:38:50 pm
As i know a few on here are like me and like to see Stats here are some for my recent SSD Upgrade. All timings done with the Stopwatch on the phone so not scientifically accurate but when you read the results you will understand there is no need to be

Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB 7200RPM SATA-II 16MB Cache HDD:

Boot (timed from pressing on button to being able to launch an app) - 42 Secs
iPhoto start  (for pics to be displayed and be able to start editing etc) - 14 Secs
iTunes Start  (for app to open and able to play first song) - 11 secs
Microsoft Word/Excel/Powerpoint (to be able to start typing) - 16 secs
iWork Pages/Keynote/Numbers (to be able to start typing) - 9 secs
Windows 7 VM Launch (To being able to launch an app) - 1min 12 Secs
Microsoft Office (within windows VM to be able to type) - 17 Secs
Shutdown (timed from clicking ok) - 8 secs

240GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD (all timed as above):

Boot - 11 Secs
iPhoto - 2 secs
iTunes - 1 sec
Microsoft Office - 2 secs
iWork - 1 sec
Windows 7 VM Launch - 14 Secs
Microsoft Office within VM - 3 Secs
Shutdown - 3 Secs.

Or as i like to say now, the MBP is Hardcore Porn Fcuking Fast  :signLOL:

It's more like going from a standard GTi to a 1500WHP Twin Turbo Lamborghini Gallardo

Does your motherboard support sata 3?

No it only supports SATA II

The reasons i got this drive is it will saturate the SATA II Channel whereas a Vertex 2 won't and it will be future compatible with any new MBP that i get.

Have a read of this review/test of the drive.

I'm happy it's working for you but there is an acknowledged problem with the sandforce controller chip in that ssd with certain hardware configurations that results in a blue screen of death on windows pcs.

.
On phone stopwatch, all from launch from Dock in Mac OS 10.6.8 Snow Leopard:

- iPhoto: 2:97 secs
- Aperture: 2:27 secs
- iTunes: 1:50 secs
- Photoshop (CS5): 3:37 secs
- Logic Studio takes a little longer due to Plug-ins and Instruments etc but it's still very fast.

All Applications on internal APPLE SSD TS256C, 250 GB.

You doing this in Lion 10.7, Carl?

....Ah, so Lion is up to 7.2 already. I've downloaded the installer so I might run it sooner than I expected.
