Title: Brake confusion
Post by: vRS_Pagey on July 30, 2011, 06:59:08 pm
I noticed today the rear discs need replacing on the Golf, so I went online to source a pair but everywhere I try are giving me 2 choices???

A 255mm disc which is 10mm thick or a 260mm disc which is 12 mm thick?  The search was completed by inputting my index so I'm

Incidently the options for the fronts are 280 mm or 288mm...........

Any advice would be appreciated, Lee.

I've read something on this. If I recall correctly, the older size disc was superceded by a newer one. Apparently both have the same fittings, & both will fit the car. I think SteveP answered this the first time it cropped up. Otherwise I'd pm DaveB1970 as the brake guru, he will know.

Thanks mate, it would good if the bigger sizes fitted, my only concern would be the different thickness, I would have thought that would affect what pads are fitted???

Yes, I think this was discussed then as well. Have you had a bash at the search tool? You may just find the thread I'm thinking of.

Stock m5 gti is 312 front, and 286mm at the rear, to the best of my knowledge. However, what golf do you need discs for?

Indeed, exactly the same brakes, but I'm after rears for swmbo's Golf GT......

@Loucyffer - I have tried various searches without success!

Then pm dave. No-one knows more about stopping than him :notworthy:

I've been searching like crazy & drawn a blank too.

I know the front 280mm brakes were fitted to the 1.9 TDI models (and possibly the smaller petrols) and 288mm were the standard front brakes for the 2.0 TDI, im unsure about the rears though!

I've tried to measure them, but with only 5mm to play with its quite difficult.  Perhaps if I took the wheel off, but this seems a bit excessive.......

It's my understanding that FWD cars have 255, and the 4-motion 260.

As I know my previous rear discs were 256mm. I am not sure if 256mm and 255mm are the same or not.

In that case, mine will be 255mm, right?

While I'm at it, perhaps I should confirm what size I need for the fronts, although my plan is to upgrade them to 312mm.  :happy2:

No. Your RS has 286 x 12 on rear as the GTI has.

The smaller ones do have 255/256 x 10.

I'm not after brakes for the vRS, it's Swmbo's GT that I need to change................

I think maybe I need to change my user name or signature to avoid confusion!

Just browsing the DPM website and it seems that 'the bruce' was correct, the 2.0 TD (140) uses 255mm on the rear, the 4 motion is 260mm and the 2.0 TD (170) is 286mm - the same as a GTi - although they do list either 280mm or 288mm for the front?!?

I was looking at these - http://www.dcperformance.co.uk/cheap/129996/volkswagen/ebc-standard-rear-brake-discs/d1283.html coupled with this - http://www.dcperformance.co.uk/cheap/107094/volkswagen/ebc-oem-rear-brake-pads/dp1497.html
Any opinions?

Also just found these - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-MK5-2003-REAR-BRAKE-DISCS-AND-PADS-255MM-/220432128873?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3352c75b69
Only after OE or slightly better, would they be ok?

You don't need to change your user name, you just need to write clearly.

In that case, mine will be 255mm, right?

Is there a year when the PD170 GT changed to the larger rear discs, as a colleague's 170 PD 2007MY GT has 255mm rear discs, and 312mm fronts.

No, the 170 HP Golfs do NOT have the larger rear discs.
It's the same as all smaller variants: 255 mm (260 mm 4-motion).

The heavier Golf Variant, Octavia, Passat or Touran are a different
thing.

Don't get fooled by some stupid internet shops where you only find
the right parts regarding PR-numbers.

I'm sorry I thought it was obvious from the op and additional links that I wasn't talking about my car.

Just had an email from the seller of these discs and pads - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280686654656&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123
They claim they're are Bosch, which are good as OE.....they seem very cheap though!
