Next on the list of mods, are these a good price?  - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-MK5-5-R32-GTI-Rear-Black-Red-Tail-Lights-HELLA-/220758801389?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item33663ffbed

They are usually around the 150 - 200 range! I just used some tint spray on mine, the finish isnt perfect but they are a lot of money!

These ones are cheaper and I think they look better due to being tinted

I'd be amazed if fitting different rear lights is classed as a mod. Usually cosmetic mods don't count, it's performance mods they'll hit you on.

Some insurances do take cosmetic mods in to account when calculating a premium, due to the increased likelyhood of some thieving little ar5e being tempted.....

agree just use some tinting spray and lacquer and do your own, i done mines and you cant tell the difference, plus it only costs 14quid instead of 150+

A word of warning to anyone thinking of getting the R32 lights from Eurowagens. I ordered some which were delivered yesterday. 1. They are not genuine but are Hella copies. 2. They don't fit flush with small gaps around the side where water can get in. 3. The connectors won't slot in - the retaining lug is too wide. So mine are going back. Looks like spraying may be the only option. Either that or order some genuine ones from the stealers - I dread to think how much!!!

They look pretty good and from there look like the real thing. Was it difficult masking out the centre of the lights? Not too sure what to do with mine at the moment? Whether to send the R32 ones I got from Eurowagens back, try to file down the retaining lug a bit so the connector fits and stick with them or spray the original ones? I'm really not a fan of the standard pinkies. It's a GTI FFS. Why did VW ever put standard rear lights on in the first place

not at all, i just used electrical tape and it worked a treat no problems. you should have a go, if you mess it up then you either buy the R32 lights or buy a standard set for 30quid on ebay, worth a try if  you ask me

They do look good in this picture, but do you have any close ups?  What product did you use and how many coats did it take, also where you masked out the reverse/indicators, is there a notciable ridge between the painted and unpainted surface?  Finally, did you leave the lights in situe or remove them?  Sorry for all the questions buddy...... :ashamed:

I have to agree with you regarding the lights, I feel the same about certain things on the vRS, like it leaving the factory with a colour coded grille amongst them.  :happy2:

You can still order them from a main dealer but they are £250 for a full set. In fact the Hella ones I got from Eurowagens are the same as they make the VW branded ones. One thing to bear in mind is that not all Mk5's are the same. There are slight variances depending on the chassis number. There is a few mm difference between earlier GTI's and later ones which explains why the lights I got from Eurowagens aren't quite a flush fit, though they have a little bit of give so if they are tightened up quite a bit mold better to the body.

Thats ok mate, no pressure.
Did you remove the light units to spary them and am I right in thinking you masked around the indicator and reverse lens?

Edit:  I just put the number in ebay and found the tint spray, but I think its a bit expensive - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290475498106?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dp5197.m570.l1313%26_nkw%3D290475498106%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1

i am thinking i also want to go down the tinting spray route...really dont think that for some smoked genuine r32's are worth near 200 notes.  i have tinted some before, on a different car many years ago, and it looked fine.  is there any tips to this or is it straight forward with these lights? anyone else got theirs tinted?  pics?

nope theres no noticeble ridges bud, well not on mines anyways, just depends how thick u put the lacquer on. i just put 2 coats of lacquer so its pretty thin. I still need to wet sand mines to get the shine on them because i made a mess of the lacquer and its turned out a little dull.

sorry about the quality of the pictures they're from my blackberry n it was raining

I'm sure you could tint the whole light but by masking out the indicator etc it makes it look like the R32 cluster which doesn't have tinted indicators......does that make sense?

Regarding the rubbing down, to achieve a perfect glossy finish, after the final coat of lacquer has cured a light sanding with 2000/3000 grit wet n dry to flatten it back and take care of any orange peel, then a few passes with a machine polisher (or a lot of passes by hand) and you will be left with a showroom finish.  :happy2:

yip your right on the ball there, thats exactly where you need to mask out. i done 3 coats of tinting spray but i reckon if i done it again i would apply a fourth coat! but thats just my opinion! be sure to add some pictures if you decided to do yours and let me know how you got on!  :happy2: anymore questions just give me a shout

Cheers for that buddy, I am waiting to hear back from the ebayer about the the incorrect price although they are others on there.  I will definitely be doing this as I think they look sooooooomuch better on a darker car.  Hopefully there will be enough spray to tint the side repeaters on the mirrors?

Gotta say, the picture of yours in post #15 looks awesome, love the angle.  :notworthy:

i have checked out the ebay items mentioned earlier...am thinking i will give this a go.  anyone got any pics of the whole rear light being smoked...that's the way i am thinking of going.

dont have a machine polisher...just buffing by hand, with or without some type of product?  never done this sort of thing before (sanding down) so not sure how it all works.

:signLOL: Patrick, I mean reply #15, its the rear quarter view of your Golf with some crummy old Merc in the back ground......

@golfnutter, I live near Dover, if you are local I would be happy to give wet sand your lights and hit them with my polisher.  You have to be brave to wet sand, before I fitted the rear valance I gave the whole thing a wet sand with 2000 grit, once dry it just looked like a flat, dull, matt paint.  Then a few passes with the DA and bingo, showroom finish.  :happy2:

The outers are easy to do, just take the bulbs out and move the carpet out the way and the bolts are easy to get to! The inners are a nightmare to be honest! You may need to remove all the boot lining and handles or you could remove one of the small caps either side!

I recently replaced the stock pinkies with R32 lights and the inners can be awkward to remove. One of the bolts is difficult to get to but if you remove the bulb connector you can just about get a 10mm spanner on to it and with much fiddling and cursing get them off.

:notworthy:

I just read this thread and was thinking exactly the same thing :happy2: must be the angle.

This thread has got me thinking about giving this a go. I was going to buy a set of the R32 lights but they are too many notes!

I’ve never done any wet n dry sanding so slightly worried about that. But just need to be brave and go for it.

I orderd the tint spray yesterday so hoping to have a go early next week.

Wet sanding is a doddle mate, just make sure you start high - 2000 grit a least, work it for a few passes then rinse and dry, repeat this until you are happy the lacquer is nice and flat then polish.   :happy2:

well i have ordered my smoke tint and lacquer today!  regarding the polishing after a bit of wet and dry...i dont have a DA polisher...is it a case of just rubbing it with some cloths or do i need some "product" of some sort?  might be doing this next weekend, although i am hoping to body colour code my rear badge and handle, so will see.

If you get some good quality lacquer (not Halfrauds carp) and apply a 'wet' coat they may not need sanding/ polishing, I only do it as you will achieve a better than showroom finish by using this method.

Tbh, if you haven't got a polishing machine I wouldn't wet sand anyway, as it will take a massive amount of elbow grease to fetch the finish back.
I may have asked this before, but where are you based?  If you are relatively local I will machine polish them for you.   :happy2:

based in lincoln...your in dover arent you?  shame.  appreciate your generosity however.

"wet" coat?  the lacquer is the VW one that comes with the base coat.  i shall not wet sand these then.

Has anyone seen these (or got a pic) on a mk5?  I have contacted Awesome but they said they don't have a pic of the mk5 ones but they do sell them for the mk5.

http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/product.php?xProd=33455&xSec=154

Ignore that, Awesome got it wrong, they are mk6 lights, damn it!!!

I am a couple of miles outside Dover.

Sorry, when I say wet coat, I mean you spray the lacquer slightly heavier to achieve a wet look, I would highly recommend a proper car paint supplier as the quality of lacquer is far superior too say, Halfrauds, and the nozzle gives a much better spray pattern.  I got mine from Invicta paints which is part of a local Ford dealership, cost about 15 quid a can but worth every penny imo.   :happy2:

You can get them from Eurowagens for 175 notes. Not too bad if you can't be bothered spraying and wet sanding the pinkies.

Looks like the tint spray is the way forward.   :happy2:

Dave

To be fair, I think he sent them back for a replacement.  They should be ok as they are made by Hella who make the OE lights for VW.

I did keep them in the end. Had to file down the little retaining lug on the connectors to get them to slot in, and once they are tightened up properly they mold to the body OK. There's quite a bit of faffing around with them (it's not the simple 10 minute job it should be) but they are actually identical to OEM but Hella branded rather than VW.

I find it really strange that a lamp made by Hella (who actually make the OE part) didn't fit without a small amount of modification consider the price.

Glad they are sorted now though, any pictures?

Here you go. This picture was taken a few days after I fitted them. Need to take some fresh pics, done a few little things since this was taken. Just done a full detail (well a full one for me anyway!!) and she looks like she's just stepped out of the showroom now  :happy2:

Yeah I found it a bit strange that the hella ones wouldn't just slot in easily without some small modification, but got there in the end

Dave, I basically had to file the little retaining lug the holds the connector in place as it was too wide and the connector wouldn't slot in properly. At first they also looked like they didn't fit quite flush with gaps down the side but once tightened up properly they fit OK with no gaps.

You mean the 2 screws that mount the actual light to the car or the plastic plug that connects them to the car to make them work?
Title: Re: R32 rear lights
Post by: Jungle_Faced_Jake on September 29, 2011, 07:04:36 pm
The plastic plug on the rear of the outer lights that the connector fits in to. There is a little plastic retaining lug that clips into the connector to hold it in place. It was too big. Don't know whether this was just an issue with mine, like the mold that the plug was cast from was a bit out?? Some filing and trail and error testing fixed it.

Thanks mate i wasn't sure what bit you was on about  :happy2: other than that would you recommend them? Thinking about getting a set of these as genuine 2nd hand ones are rare and go very quickly on here for not much less  and dont fancy paying over £220 for new ones

Thanks

Yeah I'd recommend them. They've transformed the rear of the car and it now looks like a proper GTI rather than any other standard golf from the back  :happy2: If you get a set hopefully yours will fit perfectly without any messing about. But be prepared just in case.
