Title: Help needed with Horn
Post by: monte on August 04, 2011, 11:37:47 pm
 First of all I am not too sure if I am posting this in the right section of the forum, but anyway here goes...

I could be totally wrong on this one, but I am convinced that my horn used to be a lot louder than it is now. I'm sure it used to be like a dual tone/twin air horn, but when I pressed it the other day it was a rather pathetic quite high pitched single tone.

Does anyone know for sure what the horn is like on Edition30's/Gti's?
Are they twin horns?
Has anyone got a photo of the actual horn showing the location?

Prob just a loose wire/connector :ashamed:

Thanks.

Carlo.

Hi Carlo,

The OEM horn on the Mk5 GTI is rather disappointing and if any debris gets stuck in it, sounds even weaker. I changed mine to triple air horns and it has saved my bacon several times.

It's located on the passenger side in the foglight area.

^ I've since changed from these double to triple Italian. The double set, made in China, failed.

I know what you mean by this. Only thanks to a freakin car accident

On our MK5's, we have high tone horn on the left, Right hand side has the Low tone horn.

It sounds to me like your low tone, either stopped working or unplugged.

Have a look, first try unplug and clean connections and replug. If that fails. then I'm afriad either a horn replacement.
Or as Robin has shown, going to air horns.

....No, and I don't have a portable recorder (just my 'living room' converted to a home recording studio! - Good job I'm no longer married!!).

Quite a few of the forum guys have heard my horns quite often - I tend to announce my arrival at meets, and I'm sure they can attest to the fact that they are neither chavvy nor 'Dukes of Hazard'. They are louder than an OEM horn and so far more effective. I would describe their sound as sporty and a higher pitch, so the sound cuts through better. IIRC they cost around £18. Very tight fit though!

Wow I can't believe it's been over a year and it's still not sorted  :ashamed:

Well I plan to change that in the morning now.

I have just received a pair of ultra loud twin tone horns  :star:

Looking at your picture Robin did you just splice into the existing wires to connect the new horns, leaving the old plugs in place?

Sorry if I sound thick, but am I right in thinking there is just a live and an earth in the original plug?

On my new horns there are two blades on each horn. I'm thinking one is live and the other is earth. So should be easy enough to wire up

....I'm afraid that my VW dealer fitted mine so I don't know how they are connected. Shabba168 (member here) was a VW mechtechie at the time and fitted mine IIRC - He would know anyway.

I'd love to hear how your new horns sound. They look nice and compact too.

That's correct just splice into the original plug and connect your new horns  :happy2:

Looking at the title of this I was a little worried...  :surprised:

As per Robins pics, make sure you use lots of black tape.

Yeah, I know it's just cosmetic...but I'd rather do away with the existing plugs if I can. Just chop em off and crimp on some insulated female spade conns

...or is it better to splice into the wires and keep the plugs?  if so can I just strip some inner wires out of some 2.5 grey electrical cable? or does it need to be automotive wire?

Thanks

I think that the main thing to achieve is tidy and totally reliable connections that will withstand movement and the weather etc which the underside of a car is subjected to.

Black insulation tape, duct tape, and cable ties, are always a true sign that a professional has been at work.
