Title: Servicing/oil Qs
Post by: stealthwolf on November 08, 2008, 08:52:48 am
Little confused.

What oils should you be using on Longlife and on Time-Distance intervals?
Why's it better to use long life on a car on T-D setting?

I'm heading to the dealers today to get some of the oil + wash + coolant. Should I ask him to change the service intervals given that I use the car as a daily commute with mostly short (7 mile) journeys to work and the occasional (every 2-4 week) 100 mile drive?

TT's advice is to use the longlife oil all the time whichever regime your on, and also to have cars such as the GTi's on T&D anyway , this is what i do anyway, TBH it can work out more expensive to be on longlife anyway if your not doing loads of miles

How old is the car ?, and what miles are you on

i would just take it to the dealer on or before its first anniversary, get them to put it on T&D ,first service is only about £100, and get them to use longlife (a first longlife is about £180 upwards iirc)

Well I got some screen wash and coolant. They didn't have the appropriate longlife oil on the shelf and the parts guy was off sick/

But they topped up the oil for free!

VW Solihull FTW!

I had my ED30 serviced yesterday.  Just over £100, and the nice touch was i got a free bottle of Mobil 1 to top up, although i hope i don't need it!

i have gone to the 1year/10K regime, although I strive to change the oil after 5k.

ive just sat at the stealers, best part of 3 hours while ours got its first serv (longlife)
its had oil (dropped from sump not sucked out) oil filter, pollen filter (which i didnt think was done at this one) brake fluid change.
also had the auto locking programed (over 10mph)
serv £185
fluid £49
lock £39
they washed and hoovered it, when i checked in the boot i found 1x litre oil (shell helix) and 1x litre screen wash (bonus)
they also swapped all 4 centre wheel VW logos (white worm) then did a recall for fuel pressure sensor (24M5) so fitted new one
dont know why
all in all worth the wait

So a happy customer then? Makes a nice change! There's seems to be a trend then with them giving oil away? About bloody time!!  :happy2:

lock £39

Was this £39 for a new lock?  Or £39 to activate anti hijack auto-locking?  Seems a bit steep to me.  It takes them minutes with the Vag-com, and they would have used vag-com on the car during the service.

Seems a touch necky!

Do you have biggish sideburns?

I saw some guy sitting in the GT sport by the door with some girl and he had a big grin on his face.

I thought "nice car, but mine's better!" lol

yeah well chuffed about the oil, it means i only need to buy 3-4 lts to done an in between serv next time as i have a spare filter.
i even left the car to stand a while so i could dip the stick to see if it was at the top of the mark,
i remember a while ago my brother-in-law had his TDI mk4 serviced, i checked the dip stick a couple of days later and it was half way on the stick, he phoned and told them , they said they never use the top mark as a guide as the machine that pumps it in is set for correct amount, i said rollocks take it in and have it topped which he did. that was when it was castrol SLX2 and dear to buy,

What's the anti-hijack autolock thing?
when you pull away and reach over say 5 mph the doors lock automatically, its a 1 min job, basically tick a box and its done, i just did it for a mate

i know its a bit steep, but whats the price on your valubles, missus, 3yr old son, pride n joy, id of slipped someone £5-£10 anyway for adding it on with the com
its set at 10mph , once over that it locks down doors/boot, once you switch off and pull the key the lot opens, or if youve pulled over and someone wants to hop out then you pull the door catch twice to get out , then pull away and that door locks again, if someone wants to get into the boot then you can press the unlock on the door top with the switch, while you still sat in on tick over, also ive heard that in the event of an airbag being deployed then that over rides it all and unlocks so as 999 can get in.
i had asked a guy at tatton to set it up but he didnt have a mk5 lead only mk4
