Title: Sick to death by the lack of respect shown by other road users!
Post by: andrewparker on August 07, 2011, 12:56:12 pm
Rant alert!

Washing my car is getting to be an increasingly depressing event, due to the fresh nicks and scratches that seem to appear on it each week.

I already have a couple of quite noticeable dints in the rear passenger door, however on Friday night that tally was added to. I was out at a restaurant and parked next to a black 5-Series. When we left the drivers side rear door has an inch long vertical dint in it. I can only presume it was an occupant in the BMW as it had left.

So thinking it couldn't get any worse I found a great space in the supermarket car park this afternoon, on the end so I was able to park a metre from the next car. Great I though - no danger there! Until I got out and found a trolley lying against the boot. Another graze to add to my collection :sad1:

I seriously wonder whether people see a car that is obviously very well cared for and loved, and are deliberately careless around it.

Rant over :ashamed:

I know the feeling.

I have given up worrying about it now. Had someone rest his laptop bag on my roof whilst i was sitting in the car once.

I'd have driven off and then reversed over it.

This is why I don't wash my as often anymore. It just hurts to find new marks. Over a year ago, someone scraped the back bumper on the driver's side - evidently as they drove out from a parked position. Had it resprayed and returned to find the same thing again a year later. This is why I now try to just fill in the marks.

At some point, it'll have a respray but not for a good while yet.

I know the exact same feeling, getting well miffed of washing my car and finding more scratches and dinks. My mates and other half like taking the mickey when I drive around a car park (or a couple of car parks at the local hell hole shopping centre) to find a decent space.

The latest additions seem to be from a new family of cats in the area that like to use it as a climbing frame  :fighting: :fighting:
The tops of the wings are covered and theres a nice one where it looks like one has slide down the bonnet by a foot, I'm hoping a correction detail will sort them as they polish out but re appear overtime, if not I will be majorly annoyed as will have to get them sprayed.

I gave it a wash today, was gonna polish it etc but just lost interest and left it... lucky I did as its just teamed down with rain, but its just disheartening every time i wash it

We need a £50 shopping car that you can park anywhere, even give it a kick in the door occasionally.

....You obviously live in the wrong neighbourhood  :

Unfortunately, too many people don't love cars as much as folks like us do. Plus, too many people give very little respect for others and/or their property. Inconsiderate thickheads!  :fighting:

One of the Presenters on fith gear (I think he's mr innaprpriate on balls of steel) did this. He swapped his M3 I think it was for a battered proton and liked it on the bases he could park it where ever and stopped worrying about it

I was thinking more along the lines of 2 cars, not sure a battered smelly old Proton would make a good toy  :signLOL:

Don't know if it's because I'm older, not in RR's league, but I gave up years ago?

My work is the worst.

You should see our Touran, sometimes you just can't fight it.

Just drive it, it's what it's all about.

I have a small Daihatsu thats 9 year old i use for shopping and such. As it just give me so much more freedom. I managed to bend the door on the gate post last winter and still not fixed it properly just bent it back so it would open/close and lock
I find the problem is how wide modern cars are compared to older ones. I had little problems with the mk1 as its so much more narrow, were as the mk5 is very wide in comparison. Even the Daihatsu thats quite narrow does not seem to pick up dings as much as the mk5 did.

This sort of thing is why i try and park well away from everyone (much to the wife's annoyance ) or next to something like this

So someone parks their precious car well away from anything else and you park right next to them!  :fighting:

Pees me off when this happens. Go to the supermarket, park in a lone section of the carpark and return to find some driver park right next to me, ignoring the 100 other spaces to choose from!

In an indoor carpark, I'd try and park in the opposite space to where you are so I can get the passenger door close to the pillar, meaning there's a huge gap between my car and anyone who parks in the next space.

What is your problem? Your judging something i did off a picture where you can see a snapshot of one area of a car park. Don't assume something is the case without knowing the full story :fighting:

Just because you can see an empty space in that doesn't mean they had parked the car well away from everyone else. The reason i parked there is because i am careful and show respect to other people's property. I also expect someone with a £60k plus car to do the same. Just the same as if i parked next to your pride and joy. I would have the same respect for it as the GTR. It just so happened that as i drove into the car park that space was there so i parked in it. If the car park had been empty i'd have parked in the single spot you can see a vehicle occupying behind my car.

I once came out of the barbers and found a white van resting against my rear bumper on a slight decline, I went in the carpet shop next door, found out it was their van and they always do that because the handbrake doesn't work very well. Few choice words and a genuine threat of violence got my message across

I'm putting myself in the GTR driver's shoes. Nice expensive car. Park it in a space with a gap on either side. Someone comes and parks next to it. I'd be a bit peed off.

Why not park in the second space to the left of the car? That's what I'd have done if those were the only spaces available.

Are you on about to the left of the GTR? if so that isn't a space it's the bit where the Pay & Display machine is.

I must say I was always worried about leaving my Ed30 in any public carpark. Going out became a stress rather then fun!
Snce I changed to a standard Golf, I'm not as worried. I still want to keep it nice, and don't wash it too often in case I notice any more marks etc, but I'm not as obsessed as I was before!
Always said that once I get another nice car I'll still keep this current golf for the shopping trips, and the nicer car for when I just want a fun drive!

had a similar thing happen to my wife's audi a4 avant a few weeks ago.  parked in an almost empty car park to attend my daughter's new school evening...got back to the car and a presumably white car left a sizeable dent and white scuff, 30cm long down the side of her ca  :angry015:r...no note, nothing, about 150 other places they could have parked and a foul mouthed wife was the result!  absolutely livid someone one try and badly park next to someone with a multitude of empty spaces, smack into another person's car and then just drive off.  as the title says, lack of respect and common decency by others.

If your so worried about scratching it im surpised you drive it.  I just park my car in the centre of a parking bay as you should. If its really tight, ill find somewhere else.  Whats the worst that can happen!!! A slight chip maybe, oh well, its not hugely expensive to repair.  Your more likely to get stone chips following another car, maybe you all should kept a few hundred meters from the car in front just in case

That must be why VW drivers are so precious then. They realise they have been stiffed paying an extra £6-10k for a badge

I'm sure the gtr owner would prefer the octavia vrs  who's owner obviously looks after his car to park next to him than a beat up old people carrier with a load of kids getting out

.... :congrats: That's right. Positioning is everything! But.... your car has to have enough power to make that overtake from further back - Ours do  :happy2: It's another reason why higher performance cars are safer (as long as they are driven responsibly).

I think the main point here is "lack of respect". If everybody had respect for each other, down to the smallest matter, we wouldn't have all the anti-social behaviour we currently have because nobody would accept it.
Keeping your good car wrapped in cotton wool is an option which many of us take but shouldn't have to, why should we foot the bill for some other @resholes actions?
I dis-agree with those that say "it's only a car, get on with it" because that is just accepting "lack of respect". It's like people parking over driveways, on narrow pavements, too close so you can't get out of your space or back into your car, the list goes on.
Until we get a grip of the next generations we'll never get out of it .As for the police doing anything about "minor offences" I think they do the best they can but are red-taped up to their ears and not helped by soppy magistrates who are out of touch with reality and 2011 in general.
Rant over, I'm off to Santorini tomorrow where you can leave your kit lying around, your doors open and nobody touches a thing, a bit like this country used to be between the wars,,,,,,
Regards,
John :jumping:

Ok before I start its just discussing I'm not expressing any opinion either way.

Are you saying that life was more respectful between wars because the wars kinda sorted everybody out?

Because I think a couple of dinks due to lack of respect is better than thousands and thousands of people dying in a war.

I hear all the old boys at work saying we need a war with national call up to sort us out.

I just keep quiet as like I said in the first sentence, I don't have an opinion either way.

No, not at all. It's just a time when, according to my parents and their generation, things and people were much nicer and everything just "worked" as it should. I don't think NS did any harm but I'm neither for it nor against it, I prefer our Professional Army where people serve as a vocation rather than a job. That's why our troops are the Best of the Best at everything that gets put on them.

John

I don't think that age or generation has much to do with a lack of respect or lack of consideration for others. It's more to do with education (parental, not academic), in other words, how you are brought up and the values you are taught. Also, what kind of character you are by nature.

Coincidentally, when I very politely made way for an old geezer (probably in his 90's) going into a shop this morning, he didn't even nod or acknowledge my good manners. That irritated me. How arrogant was he to think that a kind gesture shouldn't be acknowledged!

So many English folks are so reserved that they avoid eye contact and don't even know how to say thank you.

The way that people drive and park often reflects their character, or lack of it!

I don't think I have lack of respect because I have given up either.

I still don't rest or hit my car door against other peoples even is its a pile of crap.

The one thing that really, really, really, really does get my goat? Wealthy people in 4x4's who just scream into the car park in £100k+ motors park in 2 spaces or at an angle next to another car, get out and just wallop your car with their door with their nose in the air of superiority!

That is real lack of respect because manners and respect do not cost a penny.

I really have to hold myself back in those situations.

Best just to leave it as the world has a way of correcting things like that, Karma! What goes around comes around.
