Ok it wasn't a little mini but it was a Skoda Fabia VRS 1.9litre TDI 4dr manual 130bhp (checked the reg online).
Was going round some bends and straight roads (NSL DC) and this thing roared past me and was holding it together quite well on the bends - I had to slow down for some of them.
Anyone had any experience with these in terms of handling?
I seriously think I need a remap + better suspension + driving lessons after that experience.
-
Those cars can be quite torquey with a remap plus they don't weigh much...
-
A mad driver will always be quicker ..... I never worry when someone leaves me behind if I am happy with how I drove - it happens a fair bit but I would rather be safe and well
-
Nippy little fella's aren't they :signLOL:
-
They are a completely underestimated sleeper as you have found out Stealth.
Nevermind. Hopefully it was a mapped one.
-
stealth that car on both top gear and fifth gear was quicker than a mini cooper around the track

only just and it was a normal cooper and not the charger or turbo version
Stealth it was likely to me running about 170+bhp so not that bad, you do need a remap LOL , I had a yellow one trying to chase me a whole ago and I succesfully pulled quote a bit on him especially after he hit his rev limiter :signLOL:
-
I think its all about the driver to be honest.
We've all heard the story from a couple years ago when that professional driving instructor (Ive forgotten his name now) was lapping faster in a Golf 140tdi than people in Ariel Atoms, Exiges, Elises, Caterhams......all because he could drive and they couldnt. I should really find the weblink at some point.

I agree with you Chris Stealth cant drive. :driver:
Stealth stop posting up such embarrasing stories and bringing the GTI name into disrepute.

This is a friend of mines Fabia.
Be afraid.
-
These really are quick when they are mapped and there are some going round that are 260+ BHP with the aid of a hybrid turbo
-
One thing I will say stealth is that in standard form they roll like the Titanic!

Of the smoke cloud??

Needs more ARDS training.

Pretty sure Jason is a member here.

Ah Jason's car is immense! Top bloke too!
I used to have an Ibiza Cupra TDI which was a Fabia vRS with a bigger turbo and uprated suspension components, Revo got it up to 198bhp and 298lb/ft. For keeping up with things it was great, I even embarrassed a brand new Boxster with it. The handling was a bit poor though, compared to the MK5 GTI its lame...the platform is specific to them but theres a lot of MK4 Golf parts on there and thats its downfall. They've got a lot of bang for the buck, but something has to give to stay competitive.

I think he is. TDIFurby if I remember correctly.

I hope its a remapped car. My missus had a mini cooper (which the vrs was very slightly quicker than on the top gear track) and that was slow slow slow. The cooper s (170bhp) she has now feels like a 1.2 when i step from mine to hers. I remember having plenty of fun down a country lane a good while back only to be passed by an absolute loon in a battered vectra. Knowing the roads and having no fear can make up for large power differences. I love to have fun but go nowhere near my cars limit on public roads, i ended up in a field many years ago and never want to repeat that again :innocent:
-
The road was a dual carriageway so it'd be interesting to see how it behaved on some properly curvy SCs.
Nousey, not quite sure what you mean by "roll like the titanic" but there wasn't as much body roll as I was expecting.
-
my other halfs fabia vrs has been mapped and it flies !!!!! it dont handle brilliantly but it can embarress loads of people who think its only a skoda :happy2: only a few weeks ago 2 guys in a mk3 vr6 were hovering around !! so i decided to go , and left them like the vr6 was in reverse :P
-
My mates got a wee black Vrs mapped to 180bhp Torquey as a Mofo :surprised: Complete sleeper but agree with the handling bit poop :driver:

Jabba rear ARB deals with most of the rolling problems.
Next step is the SEAT Sport (Ibiza) front ARB, FSD's and Eibach.
Tight as a nuns chuff with that lot on it.
-
Think he's going for the Jabba ARB's next :happy2: Got Fk silverlines on it just now but they ain't that good

Hi Stealthwolf,
What colour was the Fabia Vrs? I’ve got 2 buddies at work who own... one silver... one red... both petrolheads & members of Briskoda.
There in Christchurch, so could be them?
Info req. matey
-
It was red mate. Think one of the reg's began with YS?
-
Cheers Stealthy... not my buddies this time... :happy2:
-
....
A friend is in the process of building a stealth Fabia VRS. He's a very highly qualified MOD driver and frankly can be extremely fast whatever he drives - It's his profession.
The skills of the driver play a big part imo.
Chris, it was Don Palmer who annihilated the 'faster' cars.

Is that the guy who does the driving skills RR was on about awhiles back?

....Yes, one of them. Such courses remap your brain!
Don Palmer is top notch for track training. I'd recommend Big John at Drivetrain for fast road - He trains 'blue lighters'.

Doubt I'd ever take the GTI onto a proper track (until it has some mods). But would love to able to handle the car properly at high speeds, as well as learning the limits of my car. IS that the one you'd recommend.

....Without any hesitation I'd recommend doing firstly CarLimits to explore the limits of your car off public road in open space. 2 or 4-car day is best (in your own car - Mine was 11 mpg and a set of tyres!)
Then as a follow up, Drivetrain for roadcraft.
Also get a copy of the latest edition "The Police Driver's Handbook Roadcraft" if you can. You'll already know some of it but it's still good and extremely well illustrated.

I guess you need to budget just under £400 for both but you get to keep the brain remap when you change car!
HTH :happy2:
P.S. - I'm gonna write and post a Review on these courses asap (job # 432!!)
-
^^ This will be an excellent topic. Most people get carried away with adding performance/handling modifications whereas the main influence on how fast a car goes or how well it handles is the actual inputs and skills of the driver.

Was that around Notts Shaun? If so I bet it's the same one that came sniffing round me a while back..

yellow ones are the fastest

Nice plate! Shame about the car! [just joking]
-
back to the topic of getting raped by a mini, well i had a similar experiance on A19 yesterday. i found myself behind a white BMW 57 plate M3, i thought a bit of playful banter may be on the cards, until i looked in my rear view and there was an Audi R8 right up me arse!!! i sheepishly pulled in and let the big boys play!! :embarrassed:

Do you have a remapped Edition 30?? If so I would have been playing with the big boys, NO DOUBT! :jumpmove:
I came together with both of these cars in my old ED30, the M3 went nowhere I stayed on his back bumper and the R8 only pulled on me slightly :rolleye:
-
nah just a regular ald mk5 gti  had the e46 for couple months and that was quick, but not as fun as my gti :happy2:
