Title: Car Nearly Went On Fire Today
Post by: csmithy on August 08, 2011, 08:45:12 pm
Parked my 55 plate gti up and went into a shop, came out and some man said he had seen smoke coming from my bonnet,  so i went to start it up and it wouldnt start. Checked fuses under the bonnet and one had gone. when i replaced it smoke starting coming from number 1 coil pack really bad so i pulled the fuse out. SO i rang up and took it there because they want to see it. Took it there and the inside of the coilpack has melted away and so have the connecting loom. they have took pictures and have contacted vw uk about fixing it for free. Has anyone else come across this problem. I googled it and read that it set fire to the whole car

Yes, I've read of this before too.

Glad you caught it before anything worse happened.

This is the reason I put a fire extinguisher in the car.

This issue has also been linked to excessive water use when washing the engine bay iirc, guy who runs Volkswizard gave a MK5 GTi a good wetting during a valet pre sale and it caught fire shortly after, apparently water can collect around the coil pack 'tube' and cause corrosion of the insulation and over time a fire  :surprised:

I'll see what he says when he rings back tomorow and if he says there isnt a recall, if he doesnt i'll quote him the recall number and make him look a dick

I have a friend who had this happen on an Octavia vRS.  Quite worrying if you have the engine cover fitted as it's hard to get off quickly.

Details on the workshop action is halfway down this page:-  http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,25506.0.html

Call your VW dealer and ask them to check & you might get four shiny new coil packs.

I had a Mk3 that burned out two coil packs in 8 years. First one that went billowed out smoke, second one just died without any histrionics. Hopefully the coil pack in the Mk5 is a bit more robust that the one in the Mk3.

how can you check to see if the job has been previously done? Only had the car just over a month but i can't see any record of it in the VW service history booklet.

TIA

I think if you give your local main dealer your car reg they can check on their system if its been done. At least that's what I'm assuming coz I'm not sure if mine have been done, like you there's no record in service schedule and it's on long life service so was last done nearly 18 months ago before I owned it.
