Title: Stone chips on red GTI
Post by: crashdesk on August 10, 2011, 10:08:46 am
Tried posting this in the detailing section but it wouldn't allow me.

Considering buying a GTI with stone chips all over the bonnet. The chips go through to the undercoat but no further. Is it hard to colour match to a 2007 red GTI? How much would it cost to repair?

I live in Belfast, NI.

Any advice greatly appreciated. Going to view car again this evening.

Thanks,
C

i would say to have the bonnet and front wings resprayed you are looking at around £500. but be aware the paint will be soft after the car has been sprayed and will just come back (talking from experience)

So best to stay away from it then? No way to fill individual chips?

you can touch the chips up and flat them back yes. then get the bonnet mopped. wish thats the route i had gone down to be honest.

Okay, that sounds more like it. Any links which describe this in more detail? Is it something I can do myself?

I would also be interested in a touch up method for my DPB as there are number of chips on my bonnet (i have also seen one, on the front lip of the bonnet, which has gone right through the paint :scared:)

Recent detail has brought up lots and lots of stone chips  :sad1:  Carbon bonnet is one of the next big mods and will be getting wrapped red to keep it chip free.

Would a wrap polish to the same dripping wet finish achieved on Keanos recent detail on my car?

Going to see if there is a company in NI that will do a good job of filling chips in.

dont know how good they are but have a look at the chipex kits, you fill the chips with paint and then theres a solution to wipe away the excess paint

Check this guy out.

http://www.pmgautocare.co.uk/

I haven't used him myself, but I know from local NI forums he comes highly recommended.
Haven't seen anyone complain about his work.

Chips aside would you not be better to fully assess the car as a purchase. I live in NI and have an 05 red GTI with a certain amount of chips etc.

you might well end up with more over the pweriod of ownership anyway - if it's a good car could be worth having with a few chips...

Picked up the car in question last Saturday. So happy. Chips weren't as bad as I thought. Thanks for the links. Now to start detailing.
