Title: Alex's rather retro '88 Mk2 GTI
Post by: alexperkins on August 15, 2011, 10:10:41 pm
Only fair to stick a thread up on here too seeing as it was considered to be one of the best GTIs ever made.....

Bought for the grand price of £200, with over 230 000 miles on the clock on the original engine AND gearbox (and yes that is more mileage than it is from here to the moon!!!), it arrived in a somewhat sorry state needing a major amount of work doing to it

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm4.static.flickr.com%2F3627%2F5826197624_8ae46096eb_z.jpg&hash=f8d647b0ad9b081a9787dc42f08ec10356c7dcda)

We wanted to keep it as a budget project, so all work was done by myself with dads help including all the welding and other labour intensive tasks that would otherwise cost an absolute fortune!!

All this has been done in the last 7 weeks.....

Feckin hell thats a lot of work in a short space of time ! What is the big rusty beam type thing on one of the pics ? Sill ?
So far all ive done is rip out all the interior and nearly all the underside ready for undersealing ( still got all the fuel system to remove though) the only bit on my car ive came accross so far that needs welding is a sill the rest is very solid, it seems like every underside bolt ive removed has broken are you the same ? All brake lines ceased and the rear beam bolts and brake caliper bolts / allan caps had to be ground off, really feel like selling up and concentrating on the mk5 but every time i see a nice mk2 it brings me a couple hours of motivation followed by the rest of the day in the huff because ive smashed my fingers or spent the full day drilling out bolts

Good work mate,You can come and help me now if you want, keep this thread updated too im looking forward to checking the cars progress :happy2:

Post by: alexperkins on August 15, 2011, 10:49:07 pm
That was the remainder of the rear bumper iron! Not much left  :signLOL:

Every bolt I removed came out with no problem - 3 in 1 professional penetrating spray is your friend  :happy2:

The mk2s are good fun, as are the mk5s but its a different kind of fun if that makes sense

Haha youll have to PM me some pics mate!

Will definitely keep it updated

Yea bud ill pm you some pics, my mk2 gti was originally my first car ! And it had found its way all the way to yoville, i think i well overpaid on it, hay hoe ! One of the bonuses on mine though is it had a brand new ( not reconditioned ) gearbox sourced through vw in 2007, its the latest ive heard off

How was your car under the plastics mate eg arches & sills ?

Good upgrade on the lights too oem ones are pants, and glad too see you have kept the oem grill !
I read something that in the new mot regs hids ect will not pass an mot as off december 2011 so it may be something to watch out for, pitty as i wanted to do mine !

Under the plastics was all tidy apart from the rear arches and the bumper iron which needed attending to. Sills are all good too!

MOT regs are changing, but its still a bit of a grey area, plus these are 4300K bulbs so look completely OEM (very bright white with almost no blue) unlike a 6000k which is distinctly an HID if you get me. Will deal with it when it comes around....i don't do candle power lol!!

Including the cost of the car, id say about £900 to £1k all in, which isn't too bad really as its a lot of car for the money!

Cheers for all the comments guys. It is epic indeed

Anyhow time for an update.....

Today the mk2 had a full camber and tracking adjustment completed on it. Unfortunately, the wishbone bushes were well past it (still the originals!!!) so rather than faf with pressing the bushes out and all that, managed to blag an absolute bargain on trade at GSF - Two wishbones of top german quality for the huge sum of just £32.

To a normal consumer, these would've been £45 each PLUS vat!!!!

So all in, to get the camber and tracking done with the wishbones swapped, some adjustment to the exhaust and a few other little bits you can only do on a ramp cost just £75 plus the cost of the wishbones - pretty damn good id say! (about 4 hours work for 3 people!!)

Also, did this tonight....

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm7.static.flickr.com%2F6070%2F6046777843_1cc108eab8_z.jpg&hash=bb32a207a8e27299c0989ea85e1afe12b45d97dd)

Bit of red retro coach lining. Was only 50p for a 10M roll so i thought why not!!

Also attempted to change the rocker cover gasket to find out GSF had completely ballsed up as usual and given me a Polo 1.3 rocker gasket instead of a Golf GTI....bloody useless in there I swear!!!

Anymore more updates to come  soon :happy2:

Yeah... preferably porsche or bbs split rims, and they must fit very badly and have stupid stretch on the tyres.   ( they have to be at least 2x the value of the car too)

Little update....

The windscreen started leaking majorly at the bottom where it had been replaced and the seal didn't appear to have sealed  :signLOL: Called the windscreen people back and they have now sealed it up so that should be the end of that!

Picked up a first aid box holder on ebay earlier in the week as mine was missing

Smoked front/side indicators now fitted so it looks much cleaner

Rocker gasket now replaced with a rubber one from a MK3 (after much fuss with getting new studs as the existing ones are for cork gaskets only!)

Bit of paintwork done, but only a tie over till I have a chance to spend some proper time sorting it out

More updates to come soon!  :happy2:

There's something oddly appealing about the Mk2. I have fond memories of building with a friend one with a 1.8t and ATB, and surprising the hell out of people on road and track.

I'd quite fancy putting a tfsi (qpeng plug and play kit) into one now...........

That would be immense!!! A TFSI in a Mk2 Golf shell would shift on!

I know a guy who is installing one into a Corrado shell at the minute.

I know a guy who is installing one into a Corrado shell at the minute.

A friend of a friend (Ben Leach), has had a tfsi in a mk2 gti for the past year and a bit, coupled to a mkv 6-speed gearbox (the one from the 6 speed 2 litre fsi, not gti), and by all acounts it's a great laugh.

I've done a K04 (mapped to 270bhp) in a Corrado with Quaiffe ATB, 4-pots, with suspension mods, and that was a hoot. Possibly not quite as stealthy as the Golf, as folk seem to expect the Corrado to have some go to it (even though a VR6 / G60 is really very limp).

Fun times....

Anyhow, I'd best not distract from Alex's thread any further!

Best get this back on track.....

Cheers guys.

Little update for today....

Had to replace the ARB drop links that mount into the wishbone as they were well past being usable, and corrected the balls up the garage made that fitted the new wishbones as they didn't put a spacer sleeve in, causing the wishbone to knock around - great job they did there NOT!!

Picked up a new bonnet off ebay and fitted it today. Its in much better condition than the previous, but I still DA'd it followed by sealant and wax to keep the shine locked in!

Must say it looks a damn sight better than it did as you can see...

I let my bro' have a play in my car last night and had to do a double-take when I clocked a certain shiny black mk2! Looks good.

Did you knock out the stock wishbone bushes and fit polyurethane? Did that, and seam welded them, on the 1.8t I did with a friend. Really improved front end precision, and reduced torque steer.

Think I might've seen you. What GTI is yours remind me

Nope. Complete replacement wishbones with oem bushes as I wanted to keep the ride comfort and it's past the point where I'd race around in it!!

Poverty spec silver 07 GTI.

Saw the car parked in the driveway, as driving down LGLR, and had an "eh up...isn't that..?" moment.

We didn't find the swap from GSF rubber to be too harsh, but the dubious quality of the GSF bushes was a constant frustration - the car ate them, even as a stock valver.
