Title: GT TDI Starting
Post by: Cloustal on August 16, 2011, 08:20:34 pm
i have an 04 GT TDI 140 with 67K miles on the clock and when it is cold it will start no problem, however when i have been a run and the engine is warm the engine will turn over and over for 4-6 seconds before the engine will fire up ?!? i have heard of this problem with this age of caddy van but havn't heard of a solution yet ? the garage i had it at just put a new battery in it and said that would fix it, which it didnt. any ideas ?

Mine does this, admittedly not for as long as you state! Mines a 58 plate and I think its a common problem with them! Im not sure what causes it though, sorry!

Very common, call a local vag tuner and ask if they do a PD 'hot start' map. Tne fault can be cured by a simple mod in one of the ECU maps.

my 1.9tdi does the same been to a numerous amount of garages each saying different things also been diagnostic checked aswell not fixed the 1 one fault that i was get which was the glow plugs but still did the same and now ive got a different fault code  which is 17978. i'd say get u car vcds/vagcom checked that will should find the problem for you

My 1.9 was doing this since i bought it at 124k, had the starter motor changed at 133k and starts beautifully when warm now.

Number of people over on ukmkivs had the same issue and was cured by starter motor.

I would recommend an andrew page over eurocarparts because theyre cheaper and you get a bosch starter replaecement, customer service is much better too!

Snap, me too.

I have heard that starter motor could fix it but not always, also changing the battery has helped one person.  Was told that it can be mapped out but when I got mine remapped it made no difference.

It is a bit of a pain but i'm used to it now, the flywheel wobble bugs me more.

Cam timing out a tooth could also cause this.....

I noticed mine seems to be doing this also, should probably pop into vw and get the code read!

Mine used to do this aswell, it's a 170 and sometimes it didn't start at all, nothing has been changed on it and codes have been read which come back with nothing and now it is fine..... Mind you one of my injectors and injector wiring was on the way out?? Could have been that.....

I've got this too   :booty:

What's the flywheel wobble?
I have noticed recently that when I'm in traffic and not moving, there's a slight well, wobble, to the car. Would that be it?
And how easy is it to fix?

Dave

Yep i get this too!!

Was going to ask about it but looks like its common.

My VCDS scan shows a glow plug out so i thought it might be that.

On the subject of starting, what about turning the engine off?

I always leave my engine running for a minute after a long drive to let the turbo cool, but even then when i shut the engine down the engine does shake a bit!!

Does anyone else have this?

It was my camshaft positional sensor that was faulty which was causing mine, VW replaced it under warranty!  :happy2:

Have you checked the cam sensor and the crank sensor as they can cause a delay in starting as the ecu will need a reading from both of them at exactualy the same time before the engine will fire up might be worth getting somebody on this forum with vag com to check it over for you because if one of them is not doing its job properly that will cause your problem hope this helps.
