Title: Carbon CAI on stage 1 map. Will it make much difference?
Post by: Jungle_Faced_Jake on August 20, 2011, 10:18:25 am
I'm getting my car ready for a stage 1 Revo remap. Have put in a Pipercross high flow panel filter and will be upgrading the DV to the revision D one. I'm also thinking about upgrading to a carbon CAI such as the Carbonio. My car is a standard K03 GTI and I'm hoping to get 250+ BHP. Will a carbon CAI make any difference or is it just a bit of bling under the bonnet that'll make a bit more noise?

They do zero. I had one and sold it, no more noise no more power.

As Rich says, although the Carbonio intake looks good under the bonnet, it does sweet FA!

To achieve the results you are talking about tbh I think you will need to look to a stage 2, or at the very least a stage one with a full intake.  VWellsy has a K&N Typhoon kit available - http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,33662.0.html.  Not a bad bit of kit as I understand and running with a good stage 1 map expect 240bhp +.   :happy2:

I kind of suspected that was the case regardless of claims of BHP and torque increases etc. Might just save my money I think and stick with the stock CAI.

The carbonio is useless, however other intakes such as itg, forge, evoms, bsh etc will easily provide a realistic 10hp over the stock airbox with a stage 1 map

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll get the stage 1 done first and then think about intakes. Not planning on stage 2 as it's out of my budget right now with all the other extra stuff needed. If I can get 250bhp on stage 1 I'll be happy - I think

you wont, lol its an addictive game, thought I would be happy stage 1 on my VRS, but have already added intake to that, and have Milltek full TBE system ready to fit lol

Looks like you'll be gutted then.  Stage 1 gti K03 will give you realistically 235-240hp.  The only way you'l get more is by putting it on a pants rolling road.

250-260 is stage 2 territory

Well I guess 240's a step in the right direction. It's no slouch on the stock map but knowing it could be better is the big temptation  It just feels a bit laggy in the lower rev range at the moment, after 3500 it ain't bad at all. Most of the time driving around London it doesn't get the chance to go above 3500 much :rolleye:

Mine made 240 the other day on stage 1 R-Tech with a Forge Twintake. Nothing else performance related. It feels a lot quicker now & there's power at any revs. 250 is possible but I wouldnt be disappointed if you don't reach that, it's more about drivability  :driver:

My Edition 30 made 310 bhp with Stage 1 and 330 bhp with Stage 1 + ITG Maxogen Intake.

Make of that what you will, but the runs were on different days at the same VERY reputable garage. That same garage didn't sell me either the map or the ITG, so they have no reason to lie or care.

What is that 80 additional horses from a stage 1?

It's Hurdys old car on the Statllers rollers, there were plenty of people there to see it, so I'm not THAT fussed what you guys think tbh.

That's what she made.

I suppose if you 'really' wanted to be picky you could say the Forge Actuator was still on there, but that's it apart from the map.

Really?

Mine has now ran 356 bhp and 359 bhp on different days with the Stage 2+ setup on those same rollers. Steve (Statller) reckons it is a pretty strong car but I thought that was about normal with all the kit? Have you just got the uprated pump but no sports cat/Stage 2 map etc maybe?

I've posted the RR pics in the Dyno thread of those, but the 310 and 330 runs were impromptu when I was passing and we just got chatting about the cars current state.

I realised there are a couple of bits I've left out of the mods to get to 310, but nothing that should REALLY matter. The car had a DSG Stage 2 map and an LSD as well, but other than that just the Actuator and Stage 1 map, then at 330 it had as before but with the ITG which I fitted myself on the driveway!!

Regards
Matt

Well I'm fitting my S3 cooler soon, then I'm gonna get a health check. Prob get it rolling roaded then! To be fair I'm running bluefin which is a less aggressive map!
