Title: Weird fuel behaviour
Post by: m4t_lee on August 20, 2011, 06:11:08 pm
Might be a tad random but I'll fill up the car and the miles till empty will steadily go down as it should, when I getto around 100 miles left as I did yesterday, got into the car today and it read 35 miles left and after 2 miles of slow driving it read 25 miles left, it drops more quickly than it should but only when unde 1/4 tank left.
Anyone else seen anything similar?

Cheers,

Mat

Will it not just be the shape of the tank that means the level effectively drops quicker for the same amonut of fuel? like an hour glass type effect?

Not sure, the weird thing is the Mte going down quicker than the miles driven, I guess I'll just have to be more on the ball when it comes to fuel :)

The entire thing is an estimate and calculated.

Example: A few weeks ago, I drove to work quite hard (but still in legal limits and there was too much traffic to go above 60mph) as I was running late. Averaged maybe 25mpg? Just as I reached work, the needle was close to empty. On the return journey, as soon as I set out, warning light was on and estimated 25miles left. This would have been based on the previous driving habit. Stuck at steady 40mph on the return (M-way overhead limits)  and the mpg increased to about 40mpg and the estimated range doubled to 50miles. This is based on current driving pattern. Needle also dipped off empty and the light turned off.

when the fuel warning light comes on you have approx 7 litres / 1.5 gallons of fuel left so apply your recent mpg from that and you'll know just how quick sharp you need to get to the drinking hole
