only had the car two weeks so have just got the V5 through the post
on model / type of vehicle it says: GOLF GT TSI 170 DSG
seems a bit odd that since 170 has nothing to do with my GTI, wierd that it could be refering to a diesel? still might save on insurance if thats the info they get when they do a search on my number plate
any thoughts?
-
well mine says golf 150?! :rolleye:
-
Its either a mistake or its time to panic. If you hadn't bought it from a dealer i would have said its a ringer. Very strange that is. :chicken:
-
its been into two different VW garages since ive had it and they havnt noticed anything untoward, maybe becuase its an import the classification has got a bit muddled
maybe that means that the insurance group of my car is lower than it should be??
fortunatley bought it from a dealer!
-
i hadthe same issue with the eos, the dealership couldn't decide wether it's was a TSi a TFSi a T or an FSi and some of those would have a red i
they reckoned it was something to with VW unsure how to initially brand the car
-
is an odd one, i mean GT 170 must be referring to a diesel....

They do a GT TSI 170, Link below

-
ahhh thats a good point..
im worried now that mine is a 1.4.. but then im sure A. i would have noticed (hopefully) B. both the VW garages that its been into would have noticed..
also didnt they come out with the 1.4T post 2006?
-
so is the thinking that the DVLA have got it wrong or that im driving a 1.4...
surely i would have noticed / the garage wouldnt be stupid enough to pull a move like that?
did buy it from VW
-
The link refers to the TSi 170, which is Supercharged and turbocharged, and by all accounts is a bit quick.
Does the sticker on the inside of the drivers door aperture say GTI?
Service book should also tell you, if a GTI, and the engine code.
-
doesnt say GTI inside the car but does on the front cover of the service manual
when i open up the bonet the engine says FSI TURBO.
in all seriousness i very much doubt its not a GTI since ive had plenty of people look at the car from VW roadside assistence when the coil packs went + the VW garage who fixed the coil pack issue + a different VW garage who had it to find out why my power output is so low...
does make you think though, why does the DVLA think its a GT 170, but at the same time says that its a 2.0l engine...
-
does it have this engine

-
boot sticker is the best way to tell although the FSI TURBO under the bonnet sounds fine - or have they just swapped engine covers!! :surprised:
only kidding
-
you will need to solve it cos if you ever need to make a big insurance claim (such as it getting nicked or you running out of talent on a corner) there would be a discrepancy between your V5 and your insurance documentation which will void your policy due to misreprasentation

-
When i bought a MKII Leon FR the dealer listed it wrongly on my V5, it came thru as the stylance which it wasn't but they got in touch with the DVLA and got it changed they did it all for me :happy2:
-
thanks for that guys - will chase it up with the DVLA, is a good point that if something were to happen to the car claiming might be an issue since its missrepresented on the V5.
saying that might be saving on insurance and since its the DVLA's screw up might be ok in the end
my engine definitley looks exactly the same as that picture
cheers
Duncan
-
w t f !!!! how can any one buy a car and not be sure what it is , surely if you dont have the knowledge to know this imo you should not be buying a gti !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have never had any doubts it hasnt been a GTI until i got the V5 through and to be honest i didnt seriously think it wasnt just strange that the DVLA doesnt classify my car as a GTI, and what does knowlege have to do with owning a car? i joined this forum to increase my knowelge about mk5 GTI's, you dont have to pass some GTI knowelge quiz to be able to own one.
in my opinion if you are buying a premium product it should have a support system where you dont have to know anything, you should just be able to take it to a dealer and get any problem sorted, unfortunatley that isnt the case and the more you know the better really!!

is your the same service one ?, mines grey with VW badge on it ?
-
honestly can't remember. off the top of my head it's the same white background + black text but not sure if it has light blue or light silver as a stripe.
-
spoken to the DVLA, is a bit strange - i have to fill in a section on the V5 and state what the model of the car should be then they should change it and send it back to me....
bit strange really as i could put anything and they would just change it - hopefully they look at the other info on the car - the V5 does have the right Engine code for a GTI..
i dont know is a strange one - to be honest have had lost of strange things happen with this car. have had more hastle with this car than any other car ive owned (bearing in mind my last 2 cars were Renault clio 172 cup's) strange that a french car has been more reliable than a VW.. just bad luck i guess
-
got any pictures of your car?
finding out the engine code would be good too.
-
engine code if i remember correctly is AXX
pix of car are in this thread (scroll down to the bottom) http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2929.15

dont want to worry you mate but i just looked at your pics , the issue with the wrong badges , why would any one do that , i would have a good look into your cars history mate and if any thing is nt right i d be back at the dealers for my money back , hope you get it sorted :happy2:

perhaps the original owner liked the stealth look and wanted to surprise people, its also possibly what confused those who filled the paperwork in for the DVLA ?
-
i think as far as the badges are concerned - becuase its had this WALD thing done, it probably came with a wald badge on the left, which is also what could have confused the DVLA, so the Dealer probably took the badge off and put GTI back on instead.
dont think its a big concern as all the other info on the V5 completley points to a GTI, including engine code
I have considered taking the car back and getting my money back but dont think its worth it.
I only paid 13k for mine with a very good spec (apart from WALD) and low mileage - car has only done 15k.
looking on auto trader - would pay nearly 15k for the same spec to get it from VW, and would definitley want a 1 year warranty with the car after the trouble ive had with this one
i do have the option though and the dealer said they would give me a refund but think it gets a bit complicated since i part exchanged my clio towards the GTI
-
have they not got access to another gti? that would be my worst case scenerio direction
-
have they not got access to another gti? that would be my worst case scenerio direction
dont think so, had a long drive in the car today, did central london to brighton and back and the car definintley feels off power, not much torque and power really dies when you get up to 5k rpm
went through a tunnel and put my foot down a bit so i could listen out for any boost leak and it did sound a bit hissy while accelerating

VAGCOM isnt a place/tuner, its a piece of computer software used on VAG cars. Also known as VCDS.
-
sorry, misread the msg, not that i know of - is there anyone near surrey with VAGCOM at a loose end tomorrow?
am booked into the tuners on tuesday so would be great to give them as much info as possible before racking up loads of labour costs
Cheers
Duncan
-
Reuben would do a VAGCOM check I would imagine anyway. In the past I've provided him with VAGCOM read-outs and he did another check on the day anyway. Takes only five minutes to do, so wouldn't worry about costs!
-
ah ok cool
wasnt sure if it was quite involved or not.
not having driven a stock GTI or any other GTI for that matter - do they usually race up the rev range then the power dips as you get close to 6k?
mine seems to pull alot less as soon as i get near 5k rpm

Lol, yeah they die just after about 5K! Pitfalls of a small turbo....great low end spool-up...shyte top end!
-
Duncan,
Just reading this thread now and I'd definitely look into the history of this car as there are a lot of things that don't quite add up:
1) You've mentioned it feels low on power and dies after 5k rpm, yes K03 GTI's do start to run out of pep above 5k but it should still be pulling quite hard at those revs.
2) The fact that there is a discrepancy on your V5.
3) The golf badge on the boot really set my alarm bells off as GTI's categorically don't come with a golf badge whereas the GT 170 which your car is mistaken for on your V5 does. I don't know why anybody would source one and apply it to a GTI.
4) GTI's come with dark tinted headlight lenses. From some of your pics, your's look like those found on a regular golf, i.e not much tint visible, although it could just be the lighting on the photo.
5) Are you certain your Monza II wheels are genuine VW OEM Monzas. It's hard to tell without getting a good closeup pic, but in one of your pics there looks to be a lip only found on some replica Monzas.
I don't want to worry you unnecessarily but I would definitely look into this car in more detail.
-
If he had one of those silly GT TSI 170 thingies, then he would have one of those cr@ppy boost gauges in his dash next to the fuel guage..... I assume that you don't have this Duncan!
-
no, dont have any boost gauges
am not too worried about the car,
only reason the V5 is a bit strange im sure is down to the fact that my car is a WALD edition inport.
the monza's are real and the bagde.... well who knows but is probably down to the fact its an inport to be honest
the car is 100% a GTI, just one with a sh*t remap and a possilbe boost leak lol
-
just phoned my local VW garage - who were very helpful
i gave them the chasis number which they used to bring up details on the german database which would show exactly what car and what spec left the factory
everything they found pointed to a GTI, included data saying 147kw and GTI and the engine code AXX.
what was strange though is the country code (my car is an import) was ARE anyone know what the code is referring to?
eitherway looks like a DVLA cock-up which is good news as far as im concerned - now just need to find why its down on power
was reading a post from redrobin who had a crack in his turbo - really hope thats not the case although my car is still under warranty...
-
Good news on the cars history. :happy2:
Duncan you really should just chill and let a reputable tuner solve your problems, instead of reading on here all sorts of nasty things.
If you read out the symptoms to a serious illness half the people in the world would think they have it. you need to stick to a fault finding process. or your just going to get yourself in a right twiz.
This place is great to share experience's but you should not use it for diagnosis. :innocent:

Very true.
problem is im off work and have been for the last 2 weeks and have another 2 weeks to go, and after being out of the country for ages was very very eager to get the golf, now that ive got it and is not working quite right it is driving me into a frenzy.
and having nothing but time and waiting for slots to come up at tuners leads me to constantly speculate
am going to chill about it and report back here once ive been to the tuners tomorrow
Cheers
Duncan
-
trust me, once its back to full power you WILL love your car!!

I was but the New DV and PCV arnt going to arrive till tomorrow, will be going in first thing and parts should arrive around 10am (fingers crossed)
had a chat to rubeun at tuningwerkes who was very helpful and said that although my car is supposed to have had this wald conversion, a recent software update might have wiped the map back to standard so is looking more likley to be a Faulty pcv or DV

ARE is the ISO 3166 code for the United Arab Emirates.

am not sure,
is an interesting one, VW said that the car looked completely standard when it left the factory, not sure if it went somewhere else and then was inported into the uk, i think they drive on the other side of the road though in the UAE
is a strange one thats for sure - will feel loads better once its been looked at!!
-
Yep, drive on the other side of the road in the UAE!
