Title: Euro road trip (Pic Heavy!!!)
Post by: Andy_GTI on August 21, 2011, 09:57:43 pm
Hi all, earlier in the year me, my brother and my parents spent 2 weeks travelling round Europe. Me in the Golf, my brother on his Honda VFR and my parents on my Dads Honda Goldwing. We went from Newcastle to Amsterdam, then from Holland to Germany (visiting the Nordschleife naturally), Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg and Belgium before returning to Amsterdam. Needless to say it was a trip of a lifetime and Id recommend it to anyone.

I covered 3500 miles in those 2 weeks and apart from an oil top up in Northern Italy, the Golf didnt skip a beat. We took hundreds of photos and I thought Id share some of the better ones with you guys! Hope you like them  :popcornsoda:

Me at the ring. I did do a lap but with it being the first time and having never seen videos or driven it on a games console the lap was abysmal (around 13 mins!!! lol)

Looks like it was a great trip. I'd love to do something like this myself one day, can't think of a better way of spending 2 weeks.

wouldn't worry about your lap time, better to take it easy than risk it and ruin your trip

great trip. Some great photo's too.

Did you feel out of place? or did you Dad and brother feel out of place?  GTI VS Motorcycles :P

Just one question really. How is your car so clean thru a 3500 miles road trip?

Looks like you guys had a great trip.

Now that was a cracking photo montage. Excellent post and, I think, inspiring as well. I'd be very interested to read any reviews of places you stayed & so on. It would be helpful for anyone planning a similar trip next year (me!).

Well done Andy :congrats:

Switzerland and Germany were stunning. Looks like you had better weather than i did though.
I would post some pics up of my trip however mine are very amateur,  compared to yours  :sad1:

Im really going to miss Germany  when I move home end of this year :sad1:

I bet you are... you must be mad coming back here.  :roll eye: Me and laura have always said that if either of us got the chance of a job in germany we would go without thinking. LOVE IT.

Not entirely my choice, Mrs is wanting to move back to be closer to family so fighting a losing battle I changed my next posting preference to Uk.  Going to be grim  :sad1:

great trip. Some great photo's too.

Did you feel out of place? or did you Dad and brother feel out of place?  GTI VS Motorcycles :P

Just one question really. How is your car so clean thru a 3500 miles road trip?

Looks like you guys had a great trip.

No we managed to get on quite well actually! There were very few times when we got split up, but while we were waiting for each other we could pull over and get vids like these:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi46.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff138%2Fdjakster%2FEuro%2520Trip%2520May%25202011%2Fth_07thMay2011005.jpg&hash=a22c59cfd6fceca792071c8b5c4e29a43be9b4d0) (http://s46.photobucket.com/albums/f138/djakster/Euro%20Trip%20May%202011/?action=view&current=07thMay2011005.mp4)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi46.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff138%2Fdjakster%2FEuro%2520Trip%2520May%25202011%2Fth_Euro014.jpg&hash=1e1657c3077c092f4b78456143c23afe0e7124d2) (http://s46.photobucket.com/albums/f138/djakster/Euro%20Trip%20May%202011/?action=view&current=Euro014.mp4)

And with regards to the condition of the car, the weather was fantastic for the whole trip, not a drop of rain. We were really lucky. All I had with me was some Autoglym glass cleaner and a microfibre cloth to get rid of the bugs on the windscreen and headlights!

Now that was a cracking photo montage. Excellent post and, I think, inspiring as well. I'd be very interested to read any reviews of places you stayed & so on. It would be helpful for anyone planning a similar trip next year (me!).

Well done Andy :congrats:

For the 1st night in Germany we stayed in a lovely B&B in Cochem, but for the rest of the trip we stayed in 'villas' at Eurocamps to keep costs down. It was a last minute decision that proved to be a very good idea. We were originally planning on taking a tent and just finding somewhere to stay day to day. But that would have been a nightmare! Instead we booked all the accomodation on the Eurocamp website a couple of days before the off and got a great deal, I think it worked out £15pp per night to stay in them, and they were great. They were all under 18months old and came with a kitchen, 3 bedrooms, a balcony, excellent shower, sittingroom and air con (a must btw!) Id recommend it to anyone thinking of doing a trip like this, as its hassle free and there are hundreds of sites across the continent. We stayed at a site near Innsbruck - Austria, one at Lake Guarda - Italy on the southern shore, one just outside Interlaken - Switzerland and one in Luxembourg. Heres a few pics to give you some idea:

How did you select your route and stops andy?  I will be comming back to Europe after Ive moved back to Uk as there is still so much I havent seen / done

It was literally a case of cracking out the euro atlas, and saying "that looks nice, lets stay there" and then just playing dot to dot with the locations. We did have one advantage in that my parents used to go round europe regularly with the caravan when we were little, as my dad was serving in the armed forces in Germany, so they had a good idea of places to visit.

I drove to the Nurburgring last year and that was amazing, next time I go Nurburg I think I might just carry on driving around Europe instead of going home  :happy2:

It was virtually playing dot to dot with the sat nav between each Euro camp site. From the ferry terminal near Amsterdam we drove direct to the Ring, had an afternoon there then drove onto Cochem where we stayed in a B&B (sorry cant for the life of me remember the name although it I remember it was 4 star. Then onto Austria via Neuschwanstein Castle. We stayed at Natterer See Euro camp near Innsbruck (A fantastic site with great facilities) After a few days there it was onto Italy via Davos and Bormio where we stayed at Bella Italia Eurocamp on the Italian lakes. A huge site but still nice - and hot! A day trip to Venice and then we headed into Switzerland where we stayed at Manor Farm Eurocamp near Interlaken. The scenery around here is simply amazing, just ask the rep and he/she will point you to all the must see places. After a few days here we started heading back to Amsterdam with a 1 night stay in Luxembourg at the Birkelt site near Larochette. Once again a brilliant site.

Looks like an epic road trip.  Thanks for sharing.

Me and my family did a similar one in the pacific northwest of america but we were all in an RV so the driving wasn't one of the highlights.

Would love to do Europe one day - maybe when the kids are grown up and I have conquered my fear of driving on the wrong side of the road !
