Could the ESP light being on (and excuse my complete lack of mechanical knowledge/jargon here) be caused by exposed wiring on the cable coming off the brake pad wear sensor and being shorted out in wet weather? Brother in law changed my front discs and pads on Saturday (having become hugely frustrated trying to get the rear caliper carrier bolts off whilst trying and failing to do the rears) and noticed that the wires are showing just after the plug.
Any thoughts? Ta in advance.

Sounds like he dislodged one of the connectors to abs front sensors whilst working on the brakes.
-
Possibly, but the light has been on for about a week now so was just wondering if it could be a cause, assuming he didnt pull it out.
-
Don't thinks so.
If the light was on before then you really need the car scanned to retrieve the stored fault code. The code should pin point the problem.

My light came on a week ago. Had to have ABS pump fixed with repair kit. Quite expensive so hopefully it's not that.

Prob the ABS pump. I had the same problem but VW only charged me labour as goodwill due to the reliability issues of said part.
