Looking to organise a remap for the GT in the next few days, but I am concerned about the apparent weak turbo in the PD140, I know a couple of people who have had major issues, one of them had to replace the turbo with a hybrid along with the downpipe and cat! :scared:
I would appreciate any advice members have on this subject, although the standard engine has reasonable power it feels truely gutless after driving the vRS. I understand that even mapped it will be no comparsion, but it will still be a massive improvement over standard. The map will be done by Shark Performance and estimated power will be between 170-180 bhp and torque around the 300lb/ft mark, it will also be switchable via their STS unit.
Thanks in advance, Lee.

Most failures I have seen have been on standard cars or cars mapped by cheap mobile tuners, the mapping itself wont cause turbo failure if done correctly.
Stage 1 on the PD140 should only raises boost slightly, mostly to increase airflow to eliminate smoke to get a better AFR. Most of the actual performance gain comes from altering fuelling maps and torque limiters.
-
The turbos are the weakest part of the pd140 engine. My first turbo was going before the first map went on mine..I was told Vw used the turbo of the mk4 130 in the early mk5 like mine but they changed the turbo in 2006..As Dave says if the map is don't right it won't cause you any issues

I had my 58' plate GT-Sport 140 remapped with Revo when I had it. I ran it for 12 months with no problem but 3 months after I sold it the new owner had to replace the turbo :surprised:
Also be prepared to drive around in a mobile smoke machine as the amount of soot that comes out will increase quite a bit :rolleye:
-
Mine smokes very little and hardly any with pdt map on
-
Thanks for the replies guys, interesting comment about the smoke, I was lead to believe that it wouldn't be any different, I will be fitting a EGR by-pass though?!
-
I wasn't expecting an increase myself but blooming heck I was suprised :surprised: But with that in mind I did replace the down turned pipes with a straight exit Miltek so this probably made it more noticable.

yes, removing the cat can increase the visible smoke.
As Maxitrol said, he saw very little smoke with our map, thats the way it should be. too much smoke = too much fuel or not enough airflow (boost).

What sort of gains do you typically see with your map?
:happy2:

I dont think bluefin, Revo make any modifications to boost pressure or if they do they are very little.
send superchips a mail and ask their opinion

heres one of the most recent 2.0 10PD we have tuned: http://www.dyno-tuning.co.uk/gallery/audiA4140BHP20d.htm

That is a very similar graph to what I've seen from Shark, very impressive and smooth power curve peaking at 3500rpm rather than 2500rpm on the standard map. If it wasn't for the excellent deal they are offering and the STS I would come and see you.

This is the 3rd turbo on my 140pd but this one is now an hybrid so hoping its a lot stronger :happy2: On Dave's(PDT) rollers it saw 207hp with a stage 1 map but Ill be letting Dave loose on it once I receive my ECU back from Kula.
The amount of smoke is the same has standard maybe less so i'm happy

:scared: What mileage has yours done? I would hope your driving style is 'spirited'........
Out of interest, what would a hybrid set me back, and is it a conversion a normal mechanic could undertake or is it specialized work?
-
My car has done 105k now, still on original everything, had it remapped a month ago by a decent tuning company to 190bhp and 300lb ft torque, best thing I did, if anything goes it goes as for mileage mine has done I'm not gonna worry too much, just an excuse to upgrade for me.

I like your thinking..........Part of me wants to say "sorry swmbo, the turbos fooked, apparently to avoid the problem happening again we need something called a hhhhhybrid turbo"

Something like £700 for a hybrid iirc...
The turbo is the only reason why I havn't mapped mine yet... :scared: the turbo will pop
-
The mapping wont 'make the tubo pop' if its done correctly, you can make over 200hp on a stock PD140 with vety little extra boost. Just use a tuner that actually understands mapping and can dyno tune the car professionally rather than just buying their files online for €20 from a guy with a disc full of files bought on ebay!

My car is on 90k now the first turbo went before I got it but the car had only done 3k miles. I have had Bluefin on for nearly 4 years, with no problems. And I don't drive my car slow unless I have my daughter and wife in.
I know S/C Bluefin doesn't alter the boost has on the polar FIS+ it showed 2.54bar when Bluefin was on and the same when taken off.

On briskoda there are frequent threads of pd140 cars 100% STANDARD with blown turbos, so i wouldnt say its to do with the mapper at all.

+ 1 Shark Performance, loving my Shark'd PD170

That doesn't fill me with confidence Sy!!! :scared:
Anyways, the STS is ordered, I will upload the map once I have fitted the EGR delete kit, then Ben can map out te CEL. :happy2:
-
Hey imagine that. I write about the failures, then the next day a failed turbo pd140 thread gets posted
-
Mine has had the REVO stage 1 software for coming on a year now and I'm well pleased... not that much change in fuel consumption, but I do get some smoke around 4k and on when pinning it! :happy2:
Best thing I've done to my Golf. Did munch my clutch after 5 laps of Silverstone mind!

You saw that too?

Seems like you struck lucky with the shark special offer then, bargain £199 for a stage 1map :drinking:

Pagey can I ask where you got the EGR delete from and how much? wouldn't mind doing mine.

I was well happy when I saw the offer, I nearly pre-ordered the stage 1 with free STS a few months ago (before we even got the car) as the offer was so good. Then the group buy on Briskoda finished and thought I would be waiting a long time, then this offer turned up. Total cost for map, STS, tweak to map out the CEL after the EGR valve is fitted and postage - £380. :happy2:

I have ordered it through a company called Darkside Developements, beside having an uber cool name their customer service has been fantastic. The complete kit has cost £70 including postage. :happy2:
He is a link to their website the delete kit is not listed for the BKD PD140 engine so I would email them direct. Scott is the guy I've been dealing with. :happy2:

Whats the EGR delete?
-
Its a kit that removes the EGR valve and replaces it with a simple pipe. Pro's are Cleaner and cooler intake air and less restriction in airflow

Apparently up to about 30k there are good, but beyond that they can get clogged and are far from efficient. I have spoken with guys who have seen an increase in power plus 2-3mpg better economy. For £70 its a no brainer, the only downside is it will throw up a CEL on the dash, but this can be mapped out. :happy2:
