Title: My Gti History. WARNING contains gratuitous images of a Mk1 & Mk2
Post by: mixit on March 28, 2009, 03:07:39 pm
Thought I’d do a potted history of my love and involvement with Wolfsbergs finest.

Anyone who’s seen my “Rocco” thread will know my wife had a narrow escape when it was written off.
Some of her compensation went towards providing us with a replacement car and helped me realise a long standing dream.
I was also a very early member of the original GTi Drivers Club and went to the very first GTi International at Knebworth.

This is the start of the obsession.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmagzm8%2FCars%2F1stmk2cforum.jpg&hash=7c9d30d19888d4f948ce2feac82a832944541717)

I don’t remember the cost of the car back in 1987 but I think it was just over a year old and had 17k on the clock.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmagzm8%2FCars%2F1stmk2forum.jpg&hash=e466119c7cd056e3990912e81aa6c023c28cb1ec)

I spent about £400 at Gti Engineering at Silverstone on a full Jetex Stainless Exhaust, a rolling road tune and a free flow K&N Filter.
This was a K Jetronic car and the meaning of that would become apparent when I traded up  :ashamed:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmagzm8%2FCars%2F1stmk2bforum.jpg&hash=6b3889476d912b20e0ba42cac3ef83b7eb2191fe)

The Alloys were “MiM’s” as I wasn’t keen to lash out on BBS at the time. The car came on 15” Steelies.

I kept the car for just over 2 years until I was lured away by the red one seen in the pic at the bottom.
Unfortunately “PAV” was written off a few years ago. It had stayed relatively local and had a heavy coming together
with a tree. … sniff…..

Up next …..  Digifant ..

OK on to my next baby.
I px'd the Atlas Grey Mk2 for this after a couple of years. Digifant Injection proved to be a lot less tweakable and was therefore not as good a drive. The grey car had only done 37k.. I must have been mad  :rolleye:

Its ok there are some Mk5's coming soon. Sorry if Iv'e hogged the threads with old stuff.  :embarrassed:
Anyone know why my pics have got jaggies? Is it because Iv'e resized to 900 pixels wide?

I kept the wheels from the 1st car. As someone said further up, the cars do look high but back in 1989 there wasn't
that much modding going on. RR would have hated it.

Ok Mk 1 Now.

The Red Mk2 had to go when I started my own business back in 1993. It was a shame as I'd been
lusting after a GTi for so many years and had been the proud owner of 2 corkers. Anyway, needs must
and I needed the capitol.

I guess it did have its compensations......

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmagzm8%2FCars%2FLlahsaMk1forum.jpg&hash=9c409c55b77b978162847fbdb6b2ee5302df79d5)

This had done 57k when I got it and I had it for a few years before it was stolen from the public car
park where I left it every day   I actually stood in the space where I'd left the car that morning
and just kept looking around, convinced I'd put it somewhere different. Its such a strange feeling.
To make matters worse the scumbags were caught on CCTV but were never found.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmagzm8%2FCars%2FLlahsaMk1Aforum.jpg&hash=509e358905b82a6419891f855f81b410428bf8e8)

It was a 1.8 and the interior was mint. Unfortunatley I have no pics.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmagzm8%2FCars%2FLlahsaMk1cforum.jpg&hash=2452e095f89547c34a17d01900a3ae8785d13e8d)

I so wish I still had this in its unmolested condition. Originals fetch some crazy money these days.

Next episode.... Back to a rare Mk2.

I guess the only thing that sets this Mk2 apart from any other is the colour.
Llahsa Green had been used for a few years on the Mk1’s and it was unusual
To find a Mk2 in the same colour. This was completely by chance as when I
Rang the guy about going to look at it he just said it was green and I assumed
It would be “Fern”. After a few trips to Gti International when it was at TRL
I realised it was pretty rare. There were over 6000 Gti’s at the event in 1995 and
like a sad muppet I walked the entire car park in search of another. I found 2 and
the same 2 again the following year. I got talking to one of the owners and he told
me that there were only 16 of them ordered in that colour from a dealer up north somewhere.
Not sure if its true but it does seem feasible. They had the interior trimmed in green and black
too just like the Mk1’s had it matching. Both the other 2 cars were “MLN” suffix too.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmagzm8%2FCars%2FLlahsaMk2Aforum.jpg&hash=f5c296382a416408f8b196af2c6034e46940178a)

The first shots are of the car soon after I got it home, its still on it’s Pirelli Wheels and had
The then obligatory eyebrow spoiler. The drivers side door was dog ruff and didn’t have
The silver stripe so there’s no pics of that side. Yeah, I know, bloody snob.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmagzm8%2FCars%2FLlahsaMk2cforum.jpg&hash=d6761a5e2cefe4642e61a02d39882e7fba27c809)

The Wheels were added after a trip to Gti Int. one year. They were 17’s and as big as it got back then.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmagzm8%2FCars%2FLlahsaMk2dforum.jpg&hash=b8bac51dcc42253044df7889e8c2b36ee3d3498d)

This profile picture holds a little secret and I’m embarrassed to say that my mate was lying
In the boot for this shot to make the rear look lower.

There now followed a VW sabbatical of 5 years where I succumbed to the nagging depression of turning 40. Look away now as it gets ugly…. I bought a SAAB 9000 saloon As I obviously thought my life was just about over. I drove it for 8 months with a nodding dog and a Panama hat on the rear parcel shelf in an attempt to inject some humour into my senseless predicament. I then went all out and followed the SAAB with 2 Impreza Turbo’s. a wagon and a classic saloon. The contrast was immense and it was then I learnt what driving fast on a B road was all about. The classic Scooby saloon still stands out as one of my most amazing cars, they are just sooo hard to unstick. I have pics of the Japanese tin boxes if anyone really wants to see em.

Here comes 2003 and my return to German solidity….. Oooh… “R”

After a few years with the Scoob and spending a fortune on Brembo Brakes, Prodrive Alloys and a stainless ex with a 3" Afterburner back Box, I decided it was time to return to  the fold.
The first image is of a “Fill in” car I bought to tide me over whilst the R32 was being built. The “R” was my first brand new car and the 3 month wait was excruciating. Having had so much fun in the Scoobies I wanted to stick with 4WD and also get back to German build quality. Driving this 1.6 was purgatory after having the Scoob.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.freeimagehosting.net%2Fuploads%2F5f238836c7.jpg&hash=cdbf477f2d7802ebe0131cf8a8e91bb3034444a2) (http://www.freeimagehosting.net/)

I received a call from the salesman one morning to say my car had arrived and was in PD and did I want to see it?
I remember saying something like “Do bears sh…”! etc.?  I shot over there as quick as the white shed would carry me.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.freeimagehosting.net%2Fuploads%2Fc12bfb4c15.jpg&hash=1a0b4a901e023765f1c456afb634693757c8c14c) (http://www.freeimagehosting.net/)

This was a bit of a mistake really as it turned out to be a bit like I’d imagine being shown Kylie Minogue naked in
front of me and not being aloud to touch her for a week. I had to wait 8 whole days before I could take delivery because of the new reg. The Number has my initials on it and would be used on the following cars too.

Within a week of taking deliver I had the cars front end covered with “Armourfend” It certainly helped keep the chips off.  :happy2:

As much as I loved the R, there was allways a feeling that you could never quite trust it to be thrown into a corner with the same kind of comitment as the Scooby. It allways seemd a bit too front heavy. Next we turn to burning oil…. Why, I’ll never know  :rolleye:

Hope you all don't mind me being a picture post whore. I don't want to take up too much bandwidth

I must have had a complete brain fade after a year with the R32 as I got it into my head that at an average of 19MPG
( there’s a lot of B roads where I live ), it was time to go economical and besides it meant I got into a MK5 too. A GT TDi followed.

The first pic is change over day. I travelled all the way to Slough for the best deal.
I had the kit put on as a dealer option. I wish I’d have gone for some 17’s too as it would have looked even better.
I liked the TDi but wish I’d waited for another 5 months for the GTi. My foray into oil burning territory was short lived
once I’d sampled the GTi and in particular DSG.

Its actually a throwback to a long standing joke about being told to sit down.... My names Mick u see...  Mick sit ...

Or was it the day I played tag with some girlies and they said ...... Micks it..................

Or maybe its because I used to work in a cement works and was responsible for the Cement / Sand ratio.......

Its actually from a time when I wasn't allowed to use "Mix" as a username for something as it had to be more than 3 letters, so I just stuck "it" on the end, as I'm in I.T.

Some cool VW's there mate. Am esp liking the B reg Mk 2 - very early spec in Lhasa green, Mk 1 side stripes, no side repeaters, small lower spoiler (in 1st pic) and single tailpipe exhaust cutout in rear panel!! I used to see an A reg Mk 2 GTI in Lhasa green every day and always lusted after it!

I kept the TDi for just under a year until the GTi was released. Ioriginaly chose Candy White and after seeing Sooo many old white Jap bangers kicking around that were falling apart, decided it would be a bad idea. Didn't know at the time that Candy would become the new black  :rolleye: I contacted the stealer about a month before production and changed the colour to Steel Grey. About a week before the factory deadline I rang em again and changed to Tornado.

Spec was :- DSG, MF Steering wheel with paddles. 18" Monza's, Centre arm rest, Sunroof, Non smokers pack.

I loved my GTi and was getting on great with DSG. I’m just over 2 years into ownership and I get an invite to an Alfa Day to test drive the Brera.
I really struggled to get comfortable in the Brera as there just wasn’t enough head room, however I did have a drive in a 159 and really liked it.
One Wednesday I have every intention of going out to buy some shirts for work. For some strange reason my GTi starts to head towards Bury St Edmonds and “Desira” the Alfa and Fiat Dealers. You only have to look at the pictures below to know what happened next, I just fell in love with it. I signed on the dotted line within 2 hours of walking into the showroom. I blame bloody Clarkson. The Red GTi was sold privately together with my Private Plate.  :ashamed:

To cut a long story well short, it was due to beat me about the head with a very large depreciation stick after 12 months so I got rid within 4 months, losing 4k.  :chicken: That sounds a lot but was nothing compared to the 12 month loss.  :scared:

If the pictures offend anyone I'll remove em, post haste

The hunt was now on for a Candy with DSG.

The wagon was ok. I just wish I'd gone back with the saloon at some point as by then I'd got Brembo's and was a little more comfortable with exploiting a Scooby's strong points. I.e just chucking it in and riding the G

Just to continue the thread and get it up to date.
The Mk3 came after the Alfa and I had it for precisely 23 hours before I bought the white Mk5.  :rolleye:
I needed a car to get down to Crawley to collect my Candy and this was close, so grabbed it for £550.

Nathan. A lot of folk didn't really like the "Lexus" style lights on my Scoob but I liked em and they were all the rage back in 2002. :happy2:
