Title: High pitched noise on acceleration
Post by: baldwined30 on August 29, 2011, 03:53:17 pm
I may have asked this before but, when I accelerate I hear a high pitched noise, I thought it may have been the fuel pump but when I took it to amd they said it couldn't be that as it would make it from tick over! I can even hear it over my twin take! Any any amy ideas!!!

Na, i thought about interference but its not that as it does it when the head unit is off! its sooo annoying! No real loss of power that i can feel!!

Mine does this. No idea what it might be but like you say it doesn't appear to impact on performance. Is yours only during heavy acceleration?

Well it seems to happen when its colder, there's a guy on audi-net and on here I think that's gonna do a health check for me after I've fitted the S3 cooler this weekend! I will prob need a health check after that as its my first big job! Haha

Is it like a squeek noise rather than a whistle?

Yes, put foot on acclereter starts, foot off it stops are a few seconds! I've had the cambelt changed as well!

Does it happen under load and at idle, or just when its 'on boost' ?
Title: Re: High pitched noise on acceleration
Post by: baldwined30 on August 30, 2011, 01:37:46 pm
No doesn't happen on idle at all! Only when boosting! Just changed to version D in last few days and that hasn't helped!! At wits end with it!!

Mine does something similar, may be the same thing. I get a squealing/whistling in the wind type noise between 3 and 4k rpm (when boost is at its peak I believe) under hard acceleration. It may be something to do with the air whistling against something in the pipework or a very minor leak. My next move is to change Revo to stock or wind the boost right down to see what happens.

Could be a boost leak or the turbo on it's way out........
Does it sound like a dentists drill?? If so more than likely the turbo........ :scared:

For you guys experiencing this squeal and if you are modified and running a hpfp then i would strongly suggest changing the fuel valve for an rs4 one. i had exactly the same issue and this solved it for me. Was only about £40 from audi. An absolute pain in the arse to fit but its down to the car requesting higher fuel and the standard valve is unable to keep the flow rates up. Most peoples RR graphs show a bad fluctuation on the fuel pressure. Unlike mine now with a constant flow and no noise  :pomppomp: Hope this helps and will try find my graph to show you all  :happy2:

First up is jussa who was running stage 2+ just like me with the only difference being the RS4 valve and then mine :happy2:

The fuel pressure is the dotted line for those of you who didnt know

I noticed that my car is making a type of whistling / whining noise after I had a play around with the PCV [did not have the right torx attachement to undo the last screw], I also was attempting to swap the Type D DV back to the original Type G seeming as my Ed30 isn't putting out the power a Revo stage 1 should be, but again I didn't have the right size Torx fitting [I'd managed to use a 25 instead of a 30 when I fit it... but it's slipping a bit when trying to undo it now]

think i will try an rs4 valve before i try the turbo then!!!!

im guesing that its not the high pitched 'flute' sound of the intake?

Not heard of this. Could a twintake make this noise? When I got mine remapped the noise I had was louder with the intake off

No it's not, that's the AFR (air fuel ratio)...

Fair amount of random stuff in this thread.

im guesing that its not the high pitched 'flute' sound of the intake?

x2 I guess the whistle (or "hoot" in some instances) may just be induction noise around the 3k-4k mark. Happens on occasion.

Post by: johnboy07 on August 31, 2011, 07:22:16 am
oh ok my mistake but the guy at JKM said that the dotted line was effected by the fuel pressure and that the rs4 valve was the reason mine was more settled and didnt fluctuate as much

Na defo not the intake as is was doing it before I had it fitted, its just a little louder now as the engine cover is off! Prob look into getting this RS4 valve but the fitting seems to be a real problem!!

My experience is not an intake whine, as I don't have one... the noise appears when the car is in the lower gears and relatively low gears [1 -3]

Mines in any gear! Not sure if it happens at full tilt but because all you can hear then is the zorst!!

I have taken mine to AMD in essex and they said that if its not happeneing all the time then not to worry! That said I think I may take it back for them to have a look at on the ramps etc!!

Seriously, turbocharged cars whistle and hoot and fart and burp and chaff and make all sorts of other funny noises. Don't worry until it breaks  :driver:

/this is probably bad advice

This will sound like (and is!) a silly question but how high pitched is the noise you are getting?

I have what I would describe as a high pitched buzz from my engine but only under gentle acceleration in lower gears up to about 3000rpm. Under heavier load it's not as noticeable. I too had wondered if this would be fuel pump related.

I've not been able to trace the source and beyond replacing random parts at great expense I've resigned myself to it being a 'feature' of the car and will just have to worry about it if or when it gets worse or something goes pop!

VW had a look at mine. Advice was to ignore it unless there's a loss of power or something breaks. Cheers then  :signLOL:

I used to run a Volvo S60 with intergalactic mileage which made all manner of clunks, bangs, rattles, knocks and squeeks. I was told this was perfectly normal for an old Volvo... the point at which you start to worry is when it stops making noises!!

My car has had this noise, but its gone for the last 6 months or so. Though i now have an ITG intake installed, so darth vader maybe hiding it

Think maybe the twintake should of hid it but it hasn't, its not really high pitched! I did replace the cam follower as I also thought it may have been that but it wasn't! Plus I think if it was the pump then it would make it from tick over! I'm hoping its the return valve as maybe the HPFP is asking from more than it can give?? Either way its another mod I guess!!

where abouts are you mate as if your near to me i will quite happily help / fit it for you. Its a paint because the fuel lines need to be disconnected from the hpfp so that you can gain enough access but im sure i will find it easier second time round  :signLOL: im down in bournemouth. All i can say is i had the same problem and searched the net until i came accross the rs4 valve. spoke to APD who are vag tuning specialists and they said that shoudl sort the problem and it did. I was in the same situation and some people like above will say leave it till it breaks but i worry too much so found this as my solution.  :happy2:

Yea I worry too much as well! A hand would be really good! I'm In essex so no the end of the world! Got my S3 cooler to fit this weekend so in a few weeks that would be a great help! Especially from someone who's fitted it before!

no problem mate just message me and will sort something else. Make sure you have another pair of hands doing the cooler. Fit my THS a few months back and it would have been so difficult on my own. Only took a few hours too. It you struggle with anythin let me know as THS supply a manual for fitment. Shud probably get it up on the how to at some point. Just alot of scanning  :signLOL: :fighting2:
