Title: Exhaust tips - carbon up very quickly, is this a problem?
Post by: berg on September 08, 2011, 08:35:15 pm
Hi chaps, after a session with the wire wool and autosol i had the tips quite respectable on sunday.

I notice today that they are pretty black again - is this normal or is it a sign the the AFR needs altering?

Many thanks.

What sort of mileage you doing? Probably normal. Mine are really bad :( spent an hour with wire wool n autosol and still black. Dont think they had ever been cleaned before prior to me buying it

Berg I noticed exactly the same thing  on mine, and I do the same mileage as you each day.... and wondered the same thing.  Got a TBE fitted on Monday so will see if the same build up happens

Best thing to do after a really good clean is every couple of days just give the pipes a wipe over with a soft cloth & they will stay nice & shiney. :happy2:

Perfectly normal.  My commute is 4 miles each way and mine start to look dirty within a week.

Mine go black quickly. I have thought about getting them black ceramic coated.

Do any of you put a sealent (I assume it has to be hi-temp) on the tail pipes after cleaning them?

Mine need cleaning and got a next week off so was planning on doing them.

...........after giving mine a good clean with metal polish i give them a final spray with ''stainles steel'' cooker top cleaner.Works a treat.

Yes, I used collinite 476s wax after cleaning with normal kitchen cleaner solution.

The wax makes it much eaiser to remove any black next time.
