Title: Mk6 panels On a mk5
Post by: Bad-vw-boy on September 09, 2011, 04:30:09 pm
Does anyone know if the panels on a mk6 golf are interchangeable on a mk5 ie the rear hatch back and bumper, just that I was looking at the two and there seems to be very little difference

i think someone did a full front end swap a while ago i.e. mk6 front end on the mk5

None of the rear panels will fit the rear bumper is shorter but wider and the rear hatch is longer, the front panels are more or less a straight swap but there is a swage line in the front wings which is not there in the mk5,  I am sure the door will fit but don't take that has gospel.

I was looking at a mk6 estate today.. The front end is more mk5ish shaped if that makes sense... I reckon the wings are still the same as a 5? Therefore putting the estate frontend on could just be lights, grille and bonnet, but I'm guessing here!!

the mk6 estate is indeed a  mk5 anyway. So those lines may already be present?

lol the Mk6 is just a Mk5 :p

but you're right, the estate wasn't a full on facelift like the hatch, they just gave it a new face.

the roof is, however, the same. apparently the glass house is as well. so if one was inclined i'd imagine they could reshell a Mk5 to get it to look like a Mk6. if i had the time and the money (and i wasn't planning on returning to uni soon) i would probably be scratching together the pennies to make a "Mk5/Mk6 hybrid R32T"

it's not an entirely crazy idea as the R32 bodykit, wheels and xenon lights would be worth something, as would the steering wheel, rear light cluster and probably the doors etc. so you could recoup a lot of the money. then you'd have a Golf 6 .:R beater for potentially a lot less money

you can see where the swage line on the wing doesn't meet with the door tho. for not significantly more money you could have gotten the rear wings, doors, tailgate and bumper done too. seems a bit of a shame to do it half ar$ed

That must cost a few grand, you might as well just get a mk6

well it costs about £4k to do the front end of an A3 with a halogen to xenon conversion.

i'd say another £2k would sort out the rear end as the bits are cheaper and the respray can be done in one go.

then factor in that your front end would be worth roughly £500ish, more with xenons.

so call that £5500? you can get GOOD R32s (with buckets) for £15k. add the £5500, and you're up to £20500, right? well Golf Rs are going for £26k+. not a bargain, but i for one LOVE the Mk6 and the thought of having a Mk6 with a VR6 makes me slighly aroused  :ashamed:

some change left over for my R32T idea too

.....and when you come to sell it it ain't worth sh*te!!

Seriously if you have got £20k to spend, what's another £5k (apart from the value of my car)?

but what part of modifying cars improves value? none of it... you do it because you enjoy it, because you've made something unique and to your own specs.

i said i'd do it if i had the money - i wouldn't sell a kidney to fund the project tho. and i don't think on blance it'd be worth any less than any other R32T project.

How much do the lines of the Mk6 wings rise above the Mk5 doors? I'm wondering is with a little modification you could make it sit flush with the original bodywork.

Thinking of doing this to my GTI, as I like the Mk6 front, but I love the Mk5 R32 rear, so now aiming to make a hybrid Mk5/6 R32/GTI type thing...
