Hi guys,
I am going to view a private used GTI. I just wanted to know if there are any common things I should be looking for when viewing the car. (Or anything in general.)
The car is a 2004 with 76000 miles on it with a full service history.

make sure it's had a cambelt and water pump change and if you can take someone along with VAG COM and scan it

Go into you local dealers with the registration and say to them that you will be getting your new car serviced there but you would just like to find out its history first. It worked for me and they told me everything it had ever had done to it and also said it had a recall on it which was free of charge! But I won't be getting any future work done there though, they are the STEALERS!!!! :rolleye: :signLOL:

Check for accident damage, it will most likely have had some paintwork done in it's life so don't be concerned if you do spot minimal paint differences. You should get a scan of the fault codes as well just to make sure all is seemingly OK.

What is the highest millage you would buy with full service history?

As low as I could afford.

Don't buy on mileage as such, buy more on condition and the transparency of the car. By this I mean that you can be certain of it's history with only one or two careful owners. So for instance, rather than going for a 50k mile tired looking GTI with a few owners I'd go for say a 65k mile pristine GTI. Of course the difference shouldn't be too big. Mileage won't kill the car, lack of care and age will!

Make sure the the car drives A1++ any stuttering and the DV could need replacing, if its a DSG car make sure its not lumpy or jerky also put it in reverse and make sure it engages fine.

I wish all buyers would think this way. People in this country are so focused on the mileage they will probably miss out on a good deal. I am having trouble selling my 56' GTI with 66k miles on. I have dropped her by £1000 already and still had no interest. She is immaculate and as tight as the day she hit the road.
