Title: Simon's Edition30
Post by: maxload on September 14, 2011, 08:28:42 pm
I've been lurking around the forums for a little while now and I thought it was about time to introduce my wonderfull Edition30. I made Pistonheads my home for six or seven months with the money saved waiting for the right ED30 to come along. It had to be manual , dimond black , five door , on an 08 plate with a full VWSH and a low mileage , clean with no mods. I went to view a few over the months but none were as advertised or with too many miles on the clock. After months of waiting suddenly there it was. Mint condition , 08 plate with 18500 miles on the clock and just about the right price and would you believe - one carefull lady owner :happy2:
Anyway I picked the car up in July and I have to say I love it. It's a fantastic car and a pleasure to drive :driver:

As you can see I have allready added some small mods with more to follow......

I'm no photographer but here are some pics

One of my first mods was to sort out the front and rear badge. The front badge was easy. As you know they can be found on ebay and various other online stores.
The rear badge is a different story though. No one sells them. It was obvious I was gonna have to do it myself....No way was I brave enough to remove the badge straight off the boot handle incase it broke - so I had to remove the boot handle.

First I removed the plastic cover inside the boot.
Then I had to unbolt and move the wiper motor out the way to be able to get to the screws that held the boot handle in place.

Once I had the handle it was a straightforward case of carbon wraping the handle and spraying the badge.

Last week I had the car remapped. Revo stage1 was my choice. It has turned the car into a beast. She pulls like a train now. The next stage on the slippery slope will be some new springs - it needs lowering. Then a miltek non res and a twintake to help her breath.... :driver:  :happy2:

Since owning the car I have become obbsessed with cleaning it. My wife thinks i'm a loon.
Anyway I like to make sure my exhaust is permanantly clean. I use autosol followed be autoglym wheelseal.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fz412%2Fmaxload2010%2FP9150049.jpg&hash=aef0f5cbb45d0e34941aa3e5948b81808149ce91)

Today it's time to get her winter coat on , so a good coating of autoglym HD wax is just the ticket. This was all after a good wash , clay , and a coating of ultra deep shine.

Nice buddy, you'll have to show me how to get the paint to look like that!!! I think I need to clay mine!!

You need to spend at least a day or two working on it. This is basicly what I  do.
Here I my weapons of choice.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fz412%2Fmaxload2010%2FP9150066.jpg&hash=87d175c5b528b695a9649014cea0a635e77edb38)

Day1.
First I will wash it , two bucket method. Then dry it.
Then I clay it all over using a good detailing spray as loob.
Then I wash it again and dry.
Then a cleanser to remove old wax etc
Then I use autoglym ultra deep shine polish which is specialy made for dark cars  :happy2:

Day2.
Wash again and dry.
Then apply HD wax  :happy2:

That kind of covers the basics. Trouble is a black car shows up every single blemish and it can be a pain to keep on top of it. I still have alot to learn . but it's great trying

Nice work, car looks immaculate. So to spray the badges u used grey plastic primer (any reason for grey) and VW black Tin spray? How hard/easy a job is it?
Title: Re: My Edition30 ::
Post by: maxload on September 15, 2011, 06:46:54 pm
If your gonna finish with black then use the grey plastic primer as far as I know they don't make a black primer only white , red and silver. Make sure you give the badge a good sanding to help the primer stick better. Give it a light coating of primer , wait 30mins lightly sand it again and give it another spray. Wait for it to dry then apply your top coat. Easy. As for the carbon I ordered an A4 size self addhesive piece off ebay then cut it to size.

Hope this helps - anymore questions just ask  :happy2:

Very nice, great work on the polish!

1st reasr badge Ive seen in a bit where the 'weave' is stuck on all in the same direction too

Lovely Eddy mate

great work, is that autoglym hd wax worth using? i was thinking of giving it a go

+1

Recently paid a very reasonable price for a detail off Keano with machine polisher but I want to be able to get the same results myself cause I love detailing my car

I like it , it gives me a finish I like , especialy if you've clayed and polished the car too. I am allways open to other sugestions though as I think experimenting with different products is good. I saw a picture of saintsteves red ED30 earlier and he used dodo supernatural to finish and it looked real glossy and slick , i'll give that a go next.

I still see alot of swirl marks on my paint so it's not perfect yet. I to would love to get a machine polisher to remove the swirls myself , maybe something I will try soon - I find a very good polish works ok though , I use either super resin polish or ultra deep shine. Both have  fillers to cover minor swirls. However a pro detail sounds good.

I used a Machine polisher the other month, and have to say , just with giving it just a quick going over, got rid of 80% of swirls i had with just a few remaining.
Just need to find someone thats willing to Mop the bonnet and front wings to blend back the filled stone chips i have, and get my chin spoiler resprayed by VW.

Is it easy enough to do, im worried about doing damage.  Was it your '1st time'?  :popcornsoda:

I use Dodo Juice Diamond White hard wax and its good but my car colour is reflex silver! Shame autoglym dont do a ultra deep shine for lighter coloured cars!

Today my obbsessive cleaning continues. I was'nt happy with my front grill and fog surrounds. Also the glossy trim around the doors was looking a little dull.  Steve recomended back to black which I'd forgotton had good it was.
A few sprays and a wipe later......

So today I drove down to JKM in sunny portsmouth. The purpose of the trip was to have my new miltek non res cat back fitted.  As many have said the standard pipes are just to quiete and imo not big enough.
An hour later it's fitted , and the difference is subtle but is deffinatly more throaty with a deeper noise. I dont know if it's a placebo effect or not , but it feels smoother maybe a little more responsive.
Also the new miltek system allows you to adjust the pipes , basicly how far you want them to stick out which I thought is a nice touch. :happy2:
