Driving home today and the ESP light came on and stayed on... turned the engine off, back on and the light remained on?
The cars a 1.6 FSI 2006, 28k on the clock
Anyone got any ideas?
-
I can scan it for you tomorrow night if you want. NW London
-
Any other strange behaviour? Might be the MAF sensor.
-
Cheers for that mate...
Apparently its a VERY common fault with mk5's, a fault that VW are all to very familiar with!
It's to do with a ABS/brake pump sensor and costs £1500 to rectify! VW will only cover it under warranty, but will offer a "good will service" which comes with its own terms and conditions..
apparently theres thousands of mk5's with this sort of problem, mostly on 1.6's..
-
I have heard of these failing...
If your about in the morning i can scan it for you.
-
i had this its a easy job to replace and i have a spare pump if needed . i also have the old top half of my pump which you can get rebuilt here
http://www.ecutesting.com/vw_golf_touran_abs_pump_module.html?gclid=CILZ56qKqqsCFcMOfAodYAJQZQ
eaither way its a diy job with a brake bleeder and vag.com

VW have now introduced a repair kit which is a good bit cheaper than a new pump
-
Cheers Richwig83 :happy2:
I got it scanned today, and it confirmed the worst... fault code - 01435 (G201) sensor - which is the ABS brake pump sensor module...
Even tho VW are fully aware of this problem, they're very reluctant to help.. some dealerships worse than others...
If your cars under warranty not a problem..
if its out of warranty they will offer a 'good will offer' of between 25 - 50% only if you're cars been serviced at VW?
The faulty part is non-servicable so i dont see what the service history has got to do with it? It's a fault with the braking system, that VW are aware of, even mentioned in the Gaurdian newspaper and yet they're still so reluctant to do anything..
the new repair kit is £600
-
I have a pump you can have for £100 if needed
-
bit of a thread resurrection ...
got this fault this morning as i drived to work and hasnt gone out since
01435
brake pressure sensor 1 (G201)
012 electrical fault in circuit
anyone have the part number for the repair kit for the pump???
TIA
mark
-
buy another pump of ebay, it is easier and cheaper than buying the repair kit which requires you to dismantle the pump
I changed my pump for a different reason and it is fairly easy to do
btw is your pump a Mk60 or Mk60EC1
-
thanks alot for advice eddie..
mine is the MK60 model

Would being a tdi make any difference??
-
Don't think so. Mine was a TDI. Just Google up BBA Reman.

pumps sell for peanuts on ebay, I know you don't get a warranty but if it is cheap enough who cares
Golfman bought a pump for £50 a few years back and it is still going strong

Or you can remove your abs pump and have it repaired here http://www.ecutesting.com/vw_golf_touran_abs_pump_module.html
-
vw ended up doing mine for free in the end... Changed the pump, as well as doing a full service and even providing me with a courtesy car...

result :congrats:

i had this problem a while back.
ended up costing me £155 for the new revised abs pump
-
Mine is 07...chanced my arm with VW who promptly told me to **** off!!!
-
got this problem too now. esp and abs lights on dashboard. not had it diagnosed yet but fairly certain its this old chestnut!

Would 99.9% not be this fault with BOTH lights. That would indicate a faulty sensor or something.
-
G201 fault which is a warranty issue.VW are obliged to fix as it is an "inherent" fault
If your dealer is unhelpful you should ask them for the vw customer services address in order to get clarification regarding the G201 ABS fault
I contacted my dealer by email stating I was well aware of the fault
They booked the car in and had everything done that morning
Before leaving the car ask if the ABS will be replaced or repaired as a repair kit is available and
not sure how reliable it is
£155 for the revised pump sounds very cheap
-
I just got the dreaded light and a scan confirmed the G201 error so I guess I will need a new pump, not taken it to VW yet though.
Is there just one pump on the cars, or is it one for each wheel?
The BBA Reman service is my first though - if I removed my pump I can get it repaired by then then sent back to me?
Is removing the pump difficult? Are there any guides? I don't have many tools and have no way of lifting my car. My thoughts are that if the tools etc. cost under £400 or maybe even more, then its a saving.
-
It's quite easy, take the battery and battery tray out, takes about an hour.

Tbh mate....judging by the questions you ask..it would be best for you not to mess with your car..bring it to a local garage and they can sort it for in around 300 quid i would guess...2 hour job for someone in the know!!
-
Took me 3 hours to change mine
I reckon I could do it in 2 now that I've done one
apart from the changing of the pump
Full brake bleeding
You will need to do basic setting, check the adaptions channels are correct and re-code the module with VCDS

While i was selling my 05 gti the g201 fault occurred. VW fixed free of charge without question even though it had been serviced at a specialist for the past 4 years.
They said I had to pay for a scan, if it came back as this fault, vw automatically pay the whole lot. No charge at all in the end and they did everything the same day. I already knew it would be this fault as it had been scanned by my specialist so was no risk.
Shocking some dealers don't help out. I did mention it had been on watchdog when asking about it

It recently had a service and had new brake discs and pads and caliper on rear. Then I had to go back because the front caliper seized and they needed replaced and pads on front too.
You think any of that could be linked? Am gonna go arrange for someone to see it tomorrow. But am not sure about the garage who done the service as Ive spent £1000 there since the service a month ago on new parts and labour and still needing to go back for more work!
Also the car is a bit slow to start on cold mornings, I wondered if the battery might be needing replaced and that could be linked, no?
Suppose these are questions to tell someone who looks at it! but good to be armed with a bit of knowledge beforehand

For anyone with the abs and esp lights together, that web link looks spot on. Sounds very similar to my symptoms! After service front brake caliper was seized and generating heat with disc and pads rubbing whilst driving. maybe that's done a sensor in...well just got to take it back again to find out. Another 300 quid to sort out sickens me. time to get rid of car I think!

No I seriously doubt the car being slow to start has anything to do with the ABS and ESP light being on.
As I mentioned you probably have a wheel sensor gone.
You really need to plug into a diagnostic machine to see what's being reported and go from there. If it's a speed sensor verify by measuring live data. It only takes 20 minutes to get a speed sensor out and you can tell if it's buggered as it would likely be mashed to hell. If not then verify wiring and what not.
Take it one step at time...don't over think things!
edit: Likewise a seized caliper is unlikely to affect it either. I had a seriously seized caliper and my speed sensor was OK. i think it's just bad luck/unfortunate timing.

After having a mate scan my car its come up with exactly the same code as other people have had..
01435 brake pressure sensor one (g201) and also 012 fault in circuit.. Is it try vw first to see if they will fix this under a warranty claim? Apologies for sounding stupid like.

Go in and say you've got this issue and say you've read it has been on watchdog and that vw will fix for free if its the fault code they recognise as being the 2003-2008 pump issue so can they scan it and confirm.
If you're anywhere near Telford, they do it for free and know all about it
-
andyp Contact your local dealer and tell them you have the G201 "inherent fault" with the ABS pump
It is up to them to either accept or reject your claim If they accept alls good If they reject ask them to be very specific as to why they are rejecting your claim
See my previous post :happy2:
-
Ill go in tomorrow if i can and ask about it, i go in that often.. they know me by first name!! hahaha
Cheers for clearing it up.. now to sort the rest of the small niggles!!
-
Went to order this part this morning...
I live in Southern Ireland.
Dealer in uk wants 160 allin plus shipping of 20 quid..brand new...215 euro altogether
Dealer local to me wants 297 euro plus vat ....365 euro altogether
How the hell can that be if they all work off the same price list vw set.???
Has me thinking the uk dealer is selling me a recon unit or the local guy is trying to rip me off..
-
Went Into dealers, enquired and showed them the fault code, car booked in and fixed earlier as it is a 'goodwill' gesture recall as they do know about this issue so repair kit now fitted foc. Win
-
Result...wish they where as sympathic here!!!

Great result mate, well done :happy2:

Mine was rear wheel bearing and abs wheel sensor gone mangled. Spent far too much on this car last few months! Nightmare

I've had this ESP failt due to the ABS system on 2 of my mk5 Golfs, the first one was done under warranty good will as the car was 10% main dealer service history and was just over 5 yrs old, the other one they would not do it and was going to be very expensive, so my local garage fixed it using the repair kit from TPS, total cost was under £300.
