I'm in a bit of a wrangle with the local vw dealer at the minute.
I was just wondering if anyone could do me a favour please and start their engine and take the dipstick out and see if theres a vacuum please?
I'm sure theres supposed to be due to the pcv system, but they saying there isnt, and something is broken in the bottom end
Thanks in advance for anyone willing to help :happy2:
-
When you remove the dipstick the tone of the engine changes, if it doesn't change the PCV is shot.
-
I fully understand that, what they are saying is, is that theres too much pressure in the bottom end of the engine, and there is a vacuum when the dipstick is removed which can be felt when you put your hand over the dipstick pipe. I'm sure that this is down to the vacuum created by the PCV system, but they said they tried it on another GTi, and there was no vacuum.
My argument is that they charged me £1370 for a turbo that they said I needed fitting, when the car still has the same issues afterwards, so I didnt even need that turbo fitting, and I'm trying to find out what the problem is
-
Ill check in a bit, unless someone beats me to it :happy2:
-
I know if you take the oil cap off there's a vacumn on mine, and if you pull the cap off the engine doesn't like it... not sure bout dipstick
-
Yes there is a vacuum via the dipstick tube. :happy2:
-
Thanks richwig :happy2: much appreciated.
Back to the dealers it is then :fighting:
-
If I were you I'd go to another dealer. Wouldn't trust them with a wheel barrow going by what you've said so far.
-
Speak with Tariq at VW customer services also...
-
Yes there is a vacuum via the dipstick tube. :happy2:
Went back to the dealers, and I'm sorry to inform you that there must be something wrong with you car aswell Richwig I was told today there definetly shouldnt be any vaccuum at the dipstick
Back in for a full day again a week monday to sort the vaccuum in the dipstick tube :stupid:
-
i have no idea if it should or shouldnt vacuum but on mine with the dipstick or the filler cap is removed mine does not change at all. i have a pcv revamp kit from bsh so nothing to do with that, how weird :sad1:
-
I'm lead to believe that the engine tone should change when you remove the dipstick. It runs funny like it's misfiring, if you put your finger over the dipstick tube the idle returns to normal. There is defo a vacuum there mate. *confused.com*

Dom, use another dealers. Had a car in today (mk4 golf 1.9) that had been to them for 3 DAYS to diagnose a boost fault (would cut out all boost under load at 3600 rpm)
Did a quick run up the road to datalog and at the split second before it hit 2000mb the map sensor signal would go flat and then immediately into limp mode. Removed map sensor from the intake pipe and connected it to my hand pump and watched the live data from OBD port, gave it 2500mb and same happened, would only read 1980mb.
£12 later and a new map sensor = fixed.
Dealer had spent 3 days with it and diagnosed a new turbo was required, fitted cost £1240 :signLOL: thats an oversight of around 1000%. they had charged him £240 for this diagnosis, he is going back to them to attempt a refund.
-
^^^ LOL!!!
So a vacuum at the dipstick is correct?

Yes, direct the dealers to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crankcase_ventilation_system
Or this: http://www.howstuffworks.com/engine.htm

It really pi$$es me off when so called "technicians" do their fault diagnosis by getting the customer to pay for substitutions that aren't needed.
Best of luck getting a refund from the drongoes.

John

Excellent! I'm sure they will love reading that and realising they are wrong.

Car still chucking out black smoke, although big blue clouds aren't as often, but it has got 2 cats on now compared to a sports cat.
I also got a fault code saying the electronic load sensor has an intermittent fault, which I've never had that code before
-
Fault code number?
-
005699 - Please check DTC Memory of Electric Load Controller
P1643 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - Intermittent
All other modules were error free, this was in the engine controller section, as soon as it's erased it reapears

Not one I am familiar with

Mine does the same aswell.

Ross tech says: When found in 2.0l TFSI (AXX/BPY/BWA etc.), check Steering Wheel Electronics for Cruise Control related Fault Codes and general Cruise Control Functionality. See TPI 2017317 for Details
-
Well I found the fault
00895 - Cruise Control Switch (E45)
014 - Defective - Intermittent
Cruise control switch still works fine? Looks like I'm going to need a new stalk for it :stupid:
It just comes back when I clear both of them so must be broke.....
-
why not code out cruise for the time being should allow you to clear the code and remove the issue while you sort the other bits out?
-

First thing I tried but kept on coding it incorrectly
I'll try again tomorrow, I guess I'll put the right number in eventually!
-
Have you sorted out your timing pull yet mate?
-
It's now max ing out at -3.8 with a stage 1 map and 97ron fuel and all stock parts on? Used 0.65ltrs of oil in 500miles, so within vw guidelines. Overboosting to a max of +200mb of boost, which is also within vw guidelines.
The only thing that is wrong is still got black soot on tailgate, and stage 1 map requests 121bar of fuel pressure for some reason? It put a nice smile on my face with the stage 1 map after being stock for weeks!
Al least your getting somewhere with your car eh!
-
Surly it shouldn't be overboosting?
.:Tapatalk:.
-
My car does a lot of things that it isnt supposed to do
Its only for about 300rpm that it does it through the rev range, before and after those 300 revs its fine :stupid:
-
I ried coding the cruise control out again, but basically the car still knows its there,, so throws up different codes, looks like I need a new stalk :surprised:
-
It's quite an easy job.
.:Tapatalk:.
-
I managed to code it out of the engine side, so that doesnt throw up any codes now.
But on the steering wheel section, if I code it out, I get a fault code saying its incorrectly coded, so just left it out of the engine side, and just ahve the faulty cruise on the steering wheel section :happy2:
-
Car back in dealers today. They said compression test was fine, just like I told them it was, but there's still a vacuum at the dipstick, so there's to much pressure in the bottom end :fighting: and that's where the problem is. Ive used over a litre of oil in 500 miles since they put a new turbo on to stop me using so much oil :stupid:
-
Do you mean nothing happens when you remove the dipstick? or does the engine get very lumpy when you remove the dipstick?? the lata is correct.
-
My local dealer also told me at the weekend that it's okay for no change in engine note?
When I remove my dipstick I can feel air at the tube hole but the revs don't hunt or idle doesnt go lumpy. Im trying a new Rev PCV this week...
-
Hi Mike,
if you pull your dipstick out with the engine running the engine note should definatly change and the engine should start to hunt like its going to stall , also if you leave it long enough like that you should get a fault code.
-
I thought so too. Do Bloody dealerships train their mechs about their engines these days? :stupid:
Thanks Rob :happy2:
PCV en route anyhow with scope to do a smoke test afterwards :happy2:
-
My engine note changes, but they reckon there's too much vacuum :stupid: think they're rubbish and haven't got a clue what's wrong with it
