Title: Best way to buy a spare key
Post by: brough74 on September 22, 2011, 09:14:12 am
Whats the best way to get a spare key for the GTI

1. Go to the dealers.
2. Go to timpsons as they apprantly do them
3. Buy a 3 button remote off ebay, get the blade cut and then get it coded at the dealers.

Any other options ?

Dont do the ebay option as its a pain in the backside and still work out expensive, I did it this way and am still trying to get my key coded for a decent price locally.

My advice would be to bite the bullet and go to the dealers saves so much hassel.

I bought a key from the dealer, then got an independant to do the immobiliser element. The independant had to extract the hex codes to decript the SKC, which means I've now got that to make future keys easier to code. Not only was the independant more helpful / flexible, they were cheaper for the coding too.

I bought a remote from eBay, key & transponder from hickleys.com, key cut by a local locksmith, got the SKC retrieved by a friendly member  :happy2: then coded it myself (with VCDS) all for less than £50

Second that had my v5 beetle done as the remote stopped working and only worked inside the cab, and yes I did try the batteries before you all ask lol

If you only need a blade you can buy one cut from ebay, send him a pic of your old key and he cuts it.

I was doubtful but after reading some reviews i tried it and the key works fine, just waiting to get it programmed now

You sent a picture of you car key and your address to some random person on eBay? I certainly wouldn't do that!

Key + blade - eBay                £40 (or less)
Key cut at local mechanics     £15
Coding at VW Leeds              £27 (part of there fixed price offers)
Total                                      £72

what sort of places does that?  i have tried "normal" key cutters and they wont touch car keys.

Pissed off, took my "new key" off ebay to my dealers to be coded today and they could not do it.

So £45 worse off and still no second key, just a cut blade. The key wont code in they tried 3 times and ive tried it and it wont work. Why not as it has internals

Yeah, inc case/transponder. You probably got a used transponder, I don't think they can be re-coded
