Title: Stage 2 Question
Post by: DJM on September 22, 2011, 07:01:03 pm
Just after some info really. Originally was only going to go stage 1 but managed to pick up a cold air induction and was just wondering if its just downpipe and decat left to go stage 2? Or would a cat back system or intercooler be required?

Also what sort of power would it sit at? 260ish? Is a Gti 2006, ko3.

you will need a downpipe/sports cat(200cell) to get to stage 2.

no need for catback or induction.

260ish yes

Is there any issues with getting downpipe and decat instead? I know on the 1.8t engines people used to have alsorts of issues. I ran sports cat on my old ibiza but thought people have ran decats on the 2.0t without issues, obviously once mapped out.

i run a downpipe and decat on mine and have no issues what so ever apart from my mot is due tomorow and every year i will have to go through the agro of changing it back for it. other than that theres no issues and slightly increased performance over a sports cat  :happy2:

for stage 2+ yes.

if im honest id do what i did, downpipe/intake/hpfp then stage 2+

Then worry about getting intercooler and what not later on.

You have

APR afaik £600+

autotech which are 300ish

the apr is a whole new fuel pump which is tested and upgraded

the autotech is just internals which your installer will have to fit (i did it myself)

They sometimes sell on here, or at awesome gti, PDT usually has some

ouch, not a cheap mod but generally needed for stage 2? or just stage 2 plus to go over 260?
You unable to use ones of the edition 30? presume they have uprated one.

they have hardware differences other than the hpfp.

You dont need it for stage 2 but theres a massive dip in power mid range compared to 2+ that i just didnt want.

So the edition 30 hfpf is no good to use on normal Gti

Well it's the same part so it's not an upgrade.

Yes i did it in stages. The desire to want more power overtook the cost implications. The THS cooler was a great addition and you can really notice the difference on a hot day as there is no heat soak and no let off in power. Wasnt cheap though at £600 and not a requirement tf stage 2+ although some will say it is. Loads of people run a standard cooler with slightly lower timing settings to allow for movement and prevent damage. HPFP i bought on a group buy which go quick frequently for £260 if i remember right. Downpipe and decat was an ebay job and was only £200. So really ive not busted the bank until i bought the FMIC and engine mounts from THS, which is more a want than a requirement.  :happy2: :drinking:

Oh Apart fromt he ITG induction which wasnt cheap at all but sounds amazing so i dont mind spending £375 lol

That answers my question too!! What gains did you get from Stage 2?
Car sounds lush btw!

Urm tbh i cant give actual figures. I guess stage one with my ITG i was running about 240-250. then stage two was more about the feel. Pulls hard throught the rev range instead of dying off. Stage 2+ is where i felt a difference. With the rs4 fuel pressure regulator and the HPFP and intercooler with all the settings tweeked and turned up, it felt like a different car. possessed lol and now its 280bhp and thats was on jkms rollers which are great rollers, if a little on the light side.  :driver:

I've been told stage 2 can hit 260/270!!

I want to add a decat now, you've made me want to do it lol! I've found these two, any thoughtS?

Would they bolt straight in?

How much did you say the FMIC, HPFP set you back, and is it worth it? :P It sounds like it is haha!
Title: Re: Stage 2 Question
Post by: johnboy07 on September 25, 2011, 05:32:41 pm
yeh they bolt staight in as you can see on both of the exhaust the end reduces in size to mate to your standard cat back system so easy to fit. Just b carefull on the turbo side as they get very hot and over the years almost welds themselves on. I snapped one off and had to drill it out which was not very fun believe me  :signLOL:. The fmic i got was a THS as they are in my opinion the best out there for the money and i paid £550 with a bit of discount as the garage i use know olly from THS and the the HPFP internals were £260-280 cnt quite remember and fit myself.  :drinking:

Oh and definately worth it. Having a play with my mate in his e46 m3 and him waving his little finger at me thinking he would destroy me, to then have me along side him and him unable to move away was worth it on its own  :signLOL:

Awesome!

I'm thinking I'll get the decat pipe, go stage two, and then possible save up for the FMIC etc etc then!!

Yeh no rush now as the summer is over and temperatures wont really affect the cars performance. Just remember the car wont pass an MOT with a decat, but i change m ine back each yr as i love the sound too much to have a sports cat and there sooooo expensive.

Cheers mate, that's something thats not so much of an issue ;)

Decat.... ORDERED! I'm not going to replace the rest, just the downpipe hopefully it'll still sound nice!!

Let me know how you find it and the quality side if you dont mind mate. Seems a bargain if quality is good at that price. I know the pipe worx guys do good work but still £130 is a hell of a saving.

I was surprised how good the quality was when i got mine off ebay. Even took it to a friend who specialises in tig welding and he was impressed for the money how good it was. He also said for the saving if it ever cracked you could get it welded up and stregthened before it was installed it anything worried me.

No problem and as stage two doesnt require much, i too would have gone stage 2 staight away if i had know when i bought my car.

Pipe is here - Initial inspection is that it's very good quality, when I come to fit it (weekend after next) I'll take some pictures and some vids and let you know for real.

But for the money, on initial inspection - looks like a bargin!

any more news on this? Mines booked in at local exhaust place. 3inch downpipe to a 2.5" decat, £150 fitted so not too bad. Will then be going R-Tech to get it mapped :)

Mines been fitted now, well all I can say is wow! I love it - the sound is incredible pops and bangs, engine feels smoother and free. Might be me but found it picks up quicker and shoots right through the rev range defo recommend it!!!!

Had exhaust done at local exhaust place i have used before. £150, 3" downpipe 2.5" decat.

Cant complain, not too loud but can hear it when putting your foot down. Had issues with mapping but hopefully sorted by next weekend. Want to hear it with more boost  :happy2:
