Title: Recaro 'Special Option' Seat Coverings....
Post by: RedRobin on April 02, 2009, 12:28:09 am
....

As many of you already know, I have recently bought jonnyc's Recaros for my GTI. But being R32 cloth they do not match my Interlagos pattern cloth of the rear seats. So, rather than change my back seat covers to R32 to match the Recaros, I much prefer to change the front Recaro's covers to Interlagos. Easy you might think - Just look up the part #'s on ETKA, but no!

My chassis/build is 2006 and then they were a VW factory option. Also, VW dropped the Interlagos option in the GTI (to many people's annoyance) - Why I'll never understand. I spent hours today with my VW dealer's parts guy searching ETKA which told me that my car from its chassis number has "anthracite" but with "RZ" trim. There is no mention of Interlagos, nor on ETKA for Jonny's 06-build GTI which is now owned by Regal and which had Recaro Sports with Interlagos. His is ETKA listed as "anthracite" and "RZ" too.

No-one seems to know what "anthracite" refers to (it's in the Description column) nor if "RZ" is Interlagos or refers to something else. The part #'s are currently out of stock anyway!

My dealer is saying that if he orders it and it's wrong, he can't return it - I think I need to talk to someone above him on that. I'm beginning to take the view that as a customer I don't even have to know any of the ETKA gobblygook but that I want the Recaro Sports Interlagos GTO covers and the part # is not my problem.

An alternative is to try and get some Interlagos cloth (extremely difficult) and get a professional car upholsterer to alter the R32 covers.

If anyone has any helpful information or contacts, I'd be grateful :happy2:

....Doesn't mixit have an Ed30 (different Interlagos covers)? << Just saw your added link - Those covers are what I need.

I think I need someone who has cloth Recaro Sports in their Mk5 R32 so I can see if the codes are different.

I know the ED30 trim comes up as anthracite in ETKA - if you can find a car with them fitted standard somewhere ... I know needle in a haystack ... ask the said person for the chassis number - give that to your parts desk and hey presto you'll get you should have the right part number.

That list of part nos I gave you Robin were found by using the Reg. of a car that had Interlagos Recaros factory fitted. The parts lad is generally spot on, but he did say they were tricky to find and had to make some calls.

I can't say 100%, as I haven't ordered them and seen what I got... but I totally understand a leap of faith at nigh on £600 might be a bit much!!

See if you can go over their heads, to at least get proper confirmation?

....

So far, with Jonny's help :drinking: I've established that the part #'s for his Recaro Sports in Interlagos (which were in his earlier GTI, not Ed30) were : -

(55) | 1K0 881 405 JE | seat cover (cloth) | left | PR-NOD
08/05-07/07TZX | anthracite | -RZ

(55) | 1K0 881 406 AR | seat cover (cloth) | right | PR-NOD
08/05-07/07TZX | anthracite | -RZ

56 | 1K0 881 805 D | backrest cover (cloth) | PR-NOD

^ This info also matches the right and left seat cover #'s which 'Blue' has posted.

The info 'Blue' posted is extra helpful because it shows "leather/leatherette | JTH" parts, and therefore it looks like "TZX" (next to the date range) might stand for Interlagos.

I'm pretty sure that "anthracite" is the general term for the interior. Very helpful as he tried to be, my dealer's parts guy isn't quite up to speed on that.

Additionally, 'Tony_D' earlier in another thread posted part #'s which also match the above.

Methinks that all I have to do is confirm that "TZX" is Interlagos...........And starting saving in my piggy bank! Birthday donations very welcome!!

Robin,

I think you are right, I looked at the below ad's and they are all listed as Anthracite interlagos.

Thanks, stokey  :drinking:

My VW parts guy has just phoned me and he also thinks the "TZX" is Interlagos but is going to double check. He can supply me the covers I want within about 10 days of order, with discount, and without any obligation for me to use them for fitting.

So, it's much easier than going the 'source-the-fabric' and then a pro upholsterer route and I doubt there'd be a cost saving on that route.

:happy2:

Excellent news! Can't wait to see them in.

Get the old covers on flea bay too, you'd be surpised how many R32 owners would love to drop from leather to cloth... no more cold botties or sweaty backs!

Oh, get some heated seat elements in the too whilst they're stripped  :happy2:

Cheers ,'Tony' :happy2:

Meeting up with Jonny for seats next week at VWR. Tight cashflow this month means that I won't order the Interlagos covers for a couple of weeks so probably no pics until beginning of May.

I won't bother with heated seat elements - I don't like heated seats - I naturally have a warm bodyheat (and a cold heart?).

I'll offer in the .:R32 OC forum before fleaBay.

I'm pretty sure the 2 scratches in mine will come out m8. Then you could always get em vinyled

Just as an added note. Does anyone ( Tony or Jonnyc ) know if my car will have the airbag part of the wiring loom under my seats / carpets? Also, I notice Nathan has the little electric adjuster on his seats too. Will I have the nessesary connections from the factory? I doubt the super efficient guys at VW would delete any wiring just because the car has Recaro's.

The back is something like £400+ vat, there'll be other ways of sorting it than going to the expense of replacing it.

Wiring should all be there, it is for the heated seats etc.

Oh, and DAMN YOU Joe... Bournemouth is no Singapore!

....Yes but (as posted already) it's relatively expensive AND you'd have to dismantle a relatively complicated seat structure.

Vinyl seems the best and most economical solution. I might do mine matt black although most of my back seat passengers are 18/19yo teenage girls - Jailbait friends of my daughter.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FRedRobin_05%2FMySpace_SlideShow%2FSky_passenger.jpg&hash=2115d94d2fde64a793a1d6d54c45854c32b91a42)

I'll contact you, Nathan, as soon as I know more detail about coding out the airbag warnings for the Recaro Sports - I'm onto it now.

....The possibly critical question (I think) is whether your ORIGINAL chassis was supplied with or without the Recaro Sports. The wiring etc might be according to the ORIGINAL seats type and not necessarily standard/generic for all/both seat types.

I hope I'm wrong!

Pat on the back for those putting the extra mile in to help fellow members.

....Yes, I think I said earlier - This community of enthusiasts has been invaluable at collectively helping. And even in handling his sale, Jonny has been exemplary in his help and caring - Too many people just take the money and run.

We all tend to help each other if/when we can and what goes around comes around and we all benefit - It's simply great and a real joy.

Yes, they certainly will look very sweet indeed....Sweet body-hugging eye-candy!

Fun isn't it :happy2:

When I first woke up this morning before getting out of bed, the thought of those Recaro Sports came into my mind and I had to remind myself that I wasn't dreaming but it was real and soon happening.

I've just confirmed the sale of my stock GTI seats to a modded Mk5 Caddy van! - I'll get pics in due course.

When's your date with Nathan, or is it secret?

Top Notch Robin... They really look good.

And the previous OEM GTi ones (above somewhere) look good too. Having been looking at second hand Audis and VW's recently, I've been really put off leather having seen how badly is sags on what are still relatively new cars. The grey cloth and Interlagos fabric look really good and guaranteed not to sag.

Or could do both? You'd then see it when the front doors are open.

Although it wouldn't be real carbonfibre and only vinyl, the stuff which is now on the market is absolutely up to it - Especially for something like a seat back or interior trim. [says he who has always said in the past that he doesn't like anything imitation!]

Visited Raccoon today and am extremely impressed indeed. They've been looking for a high standard 'carbon' vinyl and the first roll is coming next week. The sample I saw was awesome - Not only does it have subtle and slight waviness in the weave but also a very slight and subtle texture. And it picks up the light reflections according to shape.

It's a bit like VWR's real carbonfibre as opposed to the deeply lacquered from OSIR.

I'm still waiting for the Interlagos sample but, assumimg it's good enough, my upholsterer can't do the job until June anyway - He's got 2 VW Campers (one split screen show car) to finish. So it's carbon vinyl my Recaro backs and door trims first. At least it spreads my costs.

Why not change on the rear seats instead??
The r32 are soo much nicer to look at IMO.  :happy2:

If anyone has any helpful information or contacts, I'd be grateful :happy2:

....That would be my second choice if I can't some Interlagos cloth (hopefully any day now). The R32 cloth is very nice indeed but I slightly prefer the Interlagos and it's also a very important component of the traditional GTI identity.

In my quest to source Interlagos cloth I was very kindly pointed in the direction of Joe on the 'old' forum. However, when he eventually sent me a sample it turned out to be nothing like the genuine Interlagos cloth and furthermore of dubious quality as a car seat material!

I have registered on Club Lupo and sent a guy called porschetrimr a PM but so far no response.

I may have to spend £570 for genuine GTI Recaro covers from my VW dealer and that's with discount! And then my local upholsterer friend £240 to fit them (cheaper than my dealer).

Finding 1.5 metres of Interlagos for about £140 and paying my upholsterer £320 to do them would be a much more cost effective option.

HELP !!

....Yes, I did so earlier today - Someone on VAGOC posted me a link. MJ is sending me a sample just to double check - The guy clearly knows what he is talking about.

Received my Interlagos sample from MJ today :jumpmove: :jumpmove: :jumpmove: :jumpmove:

No prizes for guessing which sample it is in the pic. Also shown is the other unbacked "Interlagos" sample I had received a week ago from Joe. The MJ sample is also foam backed.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FRedRobin_05%2FMods%2FInterlagos1.jpg&hash=4b5aaa9c6e224c7b85803e57430f2e289bd90210)

One sample costs ~£60 a metre and the other ~£90 a metre - Guess which cost which! I'm now actually feeling quite angry with Joe (Admin on the 'other' forum) - Is he taking the piss or trying to con me!? :fighting:

^^^^
EDIT: I have subsequently made my peace with Joe and would not wish a misunderstanding over an unsatisfactory sample to reflect in any way on Joe's standard of workmanship.

The problem is with it being a forum, its like getting it mapped or getting a milly all the people who have a particular brand shout from the hill tops every time some one asks whats this like. And the same will be for Joe as soon as i asked over their the other month i got about 6 PM's telling me go to Joe he is the best.

Hi Robin,

I totally agree that one is spot on :happy2:

Did Joe know it was for a MKV as that sample looks more like it is from an older version of the GTI.

£90 a metre is awfully steep though. For that you could buy leather or alcantara!

A big thanx to TC, Greenouse, and those who with every good intention tried to help me by recommending Joe - Although I'm irritated I don't actually think he set out to con me and his upholstery work itself may be very good.

I've just got back from my upholstery guy and he will fit me in during June. Such a relief to source the genuine Mk5 Interlagos!!

....Well I did make it crystal clear it was for a Mk5 both in an email and on the phone.

My upholsterer couldn't believe that Joe wanted £90 per metre and described the sample as "absolute crap for seating!"

All's well that ends well - What a journey!

^ :jumpmove: I'm liking the way the red line in the cloth picks up with the red bodywork. And also the carbon vinyl is looking subtle rather than that high gloss black.

Those high gloss deep black backs to Nathan's Recaros will suit his glossy deep black car extremely well though.

....I'll be posting pics of them re-upholstered in Interlagos but they won't be done until June. Methinks I better make sure it's in time for Inters.

if you don't mind me asking, how much is a retrim (on average)

i was looking at the leather recaro's and see they don't wear well and so if i had picked a set up would like to sort out the side bolsters (but not sure what to and how)

....You'd best ask a professional coachbuilder/upholsterer. Leather will be more than cloth and it depends on the extent of what you want done.

If you are up north, check out MJ Interiors and do say I recommended him (Micheal).

Good luck trying to find some GTI/R32 Recaros!

....

I've just had a PM from Joe who supplied me with the first (unsatisfactory) sample and he's naturally disappointed in my comments in this thread.

I think it only fair to reiterate that although I was naturally very disappointed in what Joe sent me and my comments were sharp, I did not and do not really feel that he was in any way trying to con me and in fact, in his own way, he was trying to help me. Hopefully though, my initial reaction to being offered what is clearly not Interlagos and at £90 a metre, is understandable when I was offered the genuine article by MJ. The £90 price appears to be due to a third party supplier who I won't bother to name.

With the exact science of hindsight it would have saved both of us disappointment if Joe had not sent me the sample as it was so far removed from the Mk5 Interlagos design.

This should in no way reflect badly on Joe's ability to execute good work and it certainly is not my intention to trash his reputation.

Time to move on..........

Red Robin saw  your carbon covered seat backs elsewhere on the web. They look great  . Are you pleased with result/quality ?

Very pleased with the quality, thanks :happy2:

It's really the combination of the seat backs with the door and dashboard trims in matching carbon vinyl which make the seats look stock. When the Interlagos cloth is sewn on, the coordination will be complete.

Sorry for dragging up an old post, but I felt information would be best kept in one thread.

Does anyone know the Part numbers of the complete Recaro's with interlagos are? Been googling for a past 2 hours trying to find an answer. I have not even managed to get the Leather version.
decided I will attempt to take a seriously big harden up pill and ask VW for price and availability.  :surprised:

I'm guessing part numbers listed by RedRobin are merely for the seat covers as appose to the full replacement seats.

I know it sounds crazy. But only being able to buy one of three sets in the past 24 months. First requiring replacement seats and then one set on ED38 (which sold with in 2 days) and Leather S3 seats in MK5 classified. I really do want the interlagos. I understand how RedRobin feels.  :drinking:

So If anyone is able to help that would be greatly appreciated. At least this way anyone else in the future will be able to direct themselves to this thread and get the correct information.

....No apology needed, buddy - It helps everyone to keep information in the same thread.  :drinking:

These Recaro versions were an expensive VW factory option which they stopped in ~2007 - They are as rare as rocking horse poo.

Perhaps those seats are still able to ordered new? I was aware that they stopped them, I do want material not the leather ones.
Otherwise i'm left with no choice other then buy a whole car in the UK and ship it back to New Zealand. As i have found a handful of R32's over here with them in. The leather version.

No, you cannot order them any longer. You could never order them separately unless they were installed in a factory car.
