Which one of the following would you go for as winter wheels.  These are both for sale in this forum

1. Should save money in the long run, 16" tyres cheaper than 18" and also do not need to pay for the tyres to be changed each time
2. Protect 18" alloys, last winter made a mess of 3 Series alloys due to krubing and state of holes in the road.
3. The smaller the wheels the better the handing in the snow (well so i am told)

I'd say the first set ...

I've bought winter wheels not especially to protect the already 'kerbed and need a refurb' 17's that are already on but just for convienience that I can swap from summer to winter easily myself and not have to pay a garage twice a year to swap the tyres.  I've also heard that lower profile tyres are fairly intolerant of being taken on and off a wheel so this will mitigate against any potential damage.
