Title: Winter steelies
Post by: cmdrfire on October 01, 2011, 10:50:05 pm
Anyone know where I can get 17" steelies in 5x112 fitment? VW only sell 16s and I'm not convinced they'll clear my front brakes (though I do need to test this admittedly). Want some steelies to get winter tyres this year, don't want my BBS out in the muck.

Answer: Go to Skoda! Not too sure if VW do a 17" Steel Wheel but I'm almost sure Skoda do. Other option is to buy cheap set of alloys off of eBay/forums.

P.S. if you have the standard 312mm GTI Brakes them 16" ALLOYS will clear your brakes. Not sure if 16" steelies are any different.

The part number for a 16 inch steel wheel, 6.5 inches wide and ET50. Should clear your standard GTI brakes, if that's what you have.  :happy2:

MyTyres.co.uk who sell complete steel wheel and winter tyre packages also quote the above tyre to use on a standard GTI

ETKA lists a 16" steel wheel for GTI, infact it calls it something like '16" winter rim for GTI".  So they definatley fit.  Doesn't mean all 16" rims will though obviously.

I had a set of 16" Alloys from the GT model on my GTI and they fitted fine as well.

As Sandy has said, a 16" steel or other VAG 16" alloy will fit over the OE GTi front brakes, if you have upgraded to R32 or similar you will need 17".   I will be advertising a set of Audi A4 16" wheels imminently for that reason.

I don't have the OE front brakes any more, I have the 312mm Brembo kit (which is smaller than the R32 brakes). Hence the reason I need to investigate whether or not a 16" will fit over. 17" will for sure.

As a further thought, IIRC you can get a 17" space saver? Could you get a winter tyre for that? I'm sure I've seen one dude in the US doing that a couple of years ago. Probably is absolutely lousy for handling though.

I saw a thread a while back where somebody was running 17" Renault Laguna Steelies with adaptors.

Cant find the thread now but if i do i'll post it on here

Can you point me in the right direction for their steel wheel and winter tyre packages please? I can't seem to find them on there.

Where are you based mate?  If you are local to me you are more than welcome to swing by and try one of my 16" wheels on your car.

15" steels fit my 140 gt . these must have smaller brakes than the gti. defo a good investment for the winter, im just trying to decide which tyres to get. been looking at bridgestone blizzaks these seem to have good reviews. have you any idea what tyres you will be going for ?

Yeah, the 140 GT has 288mm brakes, like mine used to, so 15's should fit over. Much cheaper for tyres but unfortunately not an option if you have GTI brakes. Like I do.  :P

Cheers, hmmm less than £100 per corner seems quite a good deal... any idea how much the steelies are on their own (I have a feeling they're around £60 or so)? :happy2:

Does anyone have a pic of a Mk5 with steelies please? Tempted to go for some with winter tyres but unsure how they'll look!

Cheers! Hmm at least with steelies people would realise they are just winter wheels... I don't think I could put on nasty 16" alloys in place of my Pescara's! :ashamed:

Quick bump, can anyone think of any sensible reason why I can't just use 17" space savers with winter tyres on them?

Out of interest do VW Transporter steelies fit on Mk5's ?

cause i think they can come with 17's which look a bit nicer then your standard steel wheels

just food for thought :)

Why? Apart from the narrower track (and corresponding decrease in handling... but hey, I'll be using them in the snow) I can't think of any limitation with them that you don't already get with winter wheels (reduction in max speed etc). I just mention because I saw some guy do it in the US with his Mk5. My big concern is clearing my front discs... which may be possible with 16" but I'm not sure.

They come in 17" but an adaptor is required as the fitment is not 5x112 (I think it was 5x120). Not the end of the world especially for winter wheels.

As said above 16" steel wheels will fit the GTI (with standard brakes) and were even a winter option from the factory and still are for the mk6.

Räder / Reifen - Winterräder (zusätzlich) *
   Winterräder (zusätzlich) 4 Stahlräder 6 J x 16 Winterreifen 205/55 R 16
  615,00 €
Wheels / Tires - Winter wheels (additional) *
    Winter wheels (additional) 4 steel wheels 6 J x 16 winter tires 205/55 R 16
   € 615.00

The R/R32 had optional winter 17s which are narrower than the standard alloys

Räder / Reifen - Winterräder (zusätzlich) *
   Winterräder "Meribel" (zusätzlich) 4 Leichtmetallräder 6 J x 17 Winterreifen 205/50 R 17
  1.000,00 €

Might be a silly question, but what do people do with their wheel nuts when they change over to winter steels? Do you just re-use the lockable ones from your Monzas?

Holy thread revival !

I could do with a set of either steelies or some reasonable 16 or 17 " alloys with good tyres....not sure I want to take my 18" Charleston's through a winter :innocent:

Can you confirm they're the same fitment? As I understand the transporters take 5x120...
