I know a few on here who have been following the Polar teams development have asked me about when the advanced version of there product was going to be out, well they have now released a version which adds some extra bells and whistle's in terms of parameters and also allows emulation of some car functions.
I have been running the beta of this new firmware for the last 3-4 months and its almost got too much data available (I dont know what to look at) I will paste the blurb below but you essentially have oil levels, power and torque used, throttle position data, all coolant data out of engine and out of radiator, fuel rail pressure fuel pump pressure so hi and low pressure systems, on top of all the other goodies.
And I have been told that the next parameters they are looking at are EGT, median injection timing and miss fire counter.
as well as adding multipe screens that you can flick between for different use, so start up screen with oil levels and temps and diagnostic screen with all timings and pressures.
Its worth looking through the list for the ECU supported features as not all are available for instance the MED9 doesnt do brake pressure. but all other parameters work on my car :happy2: they have also with the most recent beta firmware added the option to have turbo pressure minus atmospheric (where the ECU supports atmospheric pressure reading)
The unit uses the same hardware as the current aluminium boxes so if you already have one of those there is an update path so dont worry
Polar FIS+ Advanced, What is it ?
Advanced Polar FIS is the evolution of FIS + unit. It adds new parameters in addition to new features.
Polar FIS + enabled viewing vehicle parameters in the FIS screen, but Polar FIS Advanced, as well as incorporating more parameters, includes new features like the ability to modify the number of flashes of intermittent comfort indicators, function automatic lowering of the mirror on the passenger side when engaging reverse and some functions which are can only be activated with Diagnostic cable such as VCDS.
Which vehicles are compatible with Polar FIS+ Advanced
Same as Polar FIS +, are listed below:
- Volkswagen Golf V (1K)
- Volkswagen Jetta (1K)
- Volkswagen Caddy (2K)
- Volkswagen Tiguan (5N)
- Volkswagen Touran (1T)
- Volkswagen EOS (1F)
- Volkswagen Passat (3C)
- Volkswagen Scirocco (1K)
- Skoda Octavia (1Z)
What parameters can be displayed with Polar FIS+ Advanced ?
- Oil temperature (° C / ° F)
- Coolant temperature (° C / ° F)
- Outdoor temperature (° C / ° F)
- Fuel remaining (Litres / Gallons)
- Rpm motor
- Pressure turbo.
- Voltage of the battery.
- Atmospheric pressure
- Pressure fuel pump
- Motor load.
- Ambient Temperature (engine ECU)
- Coolant temperature engine output.
- Coolant temperature leaving the radiator.
- Mass air flow.
- Sensor 1 throttle pedal.
- Sensor 2 throttle pedal.
- Sensor 1 throttle valve.
- Sensor 2 throttle valve.
- Horse Power used cv.
- Oil level.
- Minimum oil.
- Brake master cylinder pressure.
- Pressure in the fuel rail.
- Torque used NM.
NOTE: Not all parameters are supported in all engine ECU, to know that data can be displayed, see the list of supported ECU: http://www.auto-polar.com/downloads/Supported_ECUs.xls
What is the role of intermittent comfort ?
The role of intermittent comfort, allows you to select the number of intermittent flashes that the comfort indicator makes. Standard, with one touch gives 3 flashes intermittently with Polar FIS Advanced, select up to 10 flashes.
You can also cancel additional flashes by pressing the indicator comfort again, for example, if you have set the indicator at 10 flashes on comfort, it will flash with a short press on the control 10 flashes, unless pressed again to cancel.
What is the function of mirrors down ?
Advanced Polar FIS can be configured to engage on selection of the reverse gear for the passenger mirror to dip down automatically to a preset position. There are 2 modes: Manual and Automatic.
In manual the mirror will lower only if the passenger position “L” is selected.
In automatic, the mirror will be lowered only when the car is parked with the indicator directed towards the space.
NOTE: Due to construction features of vehicles it cannot be guaranteed that mirror position will be "perfect". On models equipped with this function from factory the mirror incorporate a position sensor, which does not happen with those without park assist mirrors, so the mirror will function in the same way, but can not be guaranteed to position "millimeter perfect".
What diagnostic functions are available ?
- Modification of the sensitivity of the rain sensor.
- Modification of the sensitivity of the light sensor.
- Enable / Disable American DLR.
- Enabling / Disabling daytime running lights.
- Enabling / Disabling cornering fog lights.
- Enabling / Disabling second rear fog light (where bulb exists).
- Enable / disable automatic closing from 15 km / h.
- Enable / disable rain closing.
- Enabling / Disabling one touch closing windows.
- Enable / Disable hazard warning in case of sharp braking.
NOTE: These functions, Polar Advanced FIS performs are via coding of the ECU with the requested function, so if this function is not supported by your vehicle ECU, then it cannot be activated.
What are the other features of the Polar FIS+ Advanced ?
- Built in VIM to enable video on stereo screen while vehicle is in motion.
- POLAR Advanced FIS supports OEM bluetooth and Fiscon bluetooth, unlike other products, POLAR Advanced FIS does not use the Bluetooth menu in the FIS, but creates a new menu called Advanced POLAR FIS.
- The name of the created menu is customisable, which can substitute the name POLAR Advanced FIS by the text you want (up to 10 characters)
- Option to turn off the POLAR Advanced FIS screen off making the unit undetectable when taking the car in for service or repair. Is reactivated by simply pressing the OK button on the steering wheel or windshield wiper lever for 10 seconds.
- Automatic temperature units (° C, ° F), Speed (kmh / mph) and Size (Litres / Gallons) selected in the FIS.
- Manual selection of the units in which you want to display the parameters relating to pressure. Automatic, mbar, bar, PSI.
- Multi-function steering wheel / Wiper stalk control.
The keys can be set from within the FIS POLAR Advanced menu do the following.
Modify volume.
Changing audio track.
Change the parameters displayed in the bottom of the screen line POLAR FIS +.
You can also configure the keys inside the AUDIO menu do the following.
Modify volume.
Change audio track (useful for cars in which the multifunction steering wheel is not installed at the factory and these keys do not work).
IMPORTANT: FOR CARS THAT ARE NOT EQUIPPED MULTIFUNCTION STEERING WHEEL, THE OPTION OF CHANGING AUDIO TRACK IS NOT AVAILABLE.
KEY FEATURES OF THE WHEEL IS NOT AVAILABLE IN ALL THE VEHICLES, since it depends on the vehicle configuration.
- Polar Advanced FIS automatically installs itself in the gateway, so you do not need diagnostic software after installation
- Updates via the Internet, via our website: http://www.auto-polar.com/index-load-support.htm
- New aluminum frame.

Rich.
As you know, I have the Polar FIS+ (Aluminium Box Version)
Is there a cost involved in getting mine to an Advanced unit or is it just an update?
-
Its a cost unfortunately, I havent had any communication with the commercial guy just the tech guy (coder) to know if I will be able to sort the updates or if it will be directly through there site only but there are details up in the shop for upgrades.
I saw your posts on the polar forum so thought I would post this detail here as you and Kalu have both expressed an interest in the newer version, I will be updating my Beta to the new firmware tonight (I hope) and will let you know how its working. As Mun said to you in the polar forum the EGT etc will be on the advanced version.
-
So just to be clear mate.
You have been running V0.1.7 Beta Firmware? and going for the full version tonight?
Also, that the advanced is something different to just a firware update? I think so, but just wanted to check. Can be difficult to view the Polar Forum from my phone :signLOL:

I have been running the advanced beta firmware for awhile as I have a special PF90 box you currently have FIS+ PF02 box and advanced is PF03. But these are just different firmware versions that are locked based on you units serial number on the update server as all new aluminium boxes have the same hardware.
So you can purchase an update polar will change the serial registration on the update server for your box and next time you update the firmware you will update with the latest Polar advance firmware and have all the extra parameters and functions.
-
Sooo frigging cool :congrats:
May have to get one! Does it loose one of the displays on the MFD or add more to it? Will it work with my 1k 08 ed30? I have highline, and MFS...but I have a kenwood head unit (DNX5220vbt) headunit works with me MFS, only it doesn't do is state tracks and radio stations on the mfd...just says kenwood,
Jack

Been very happy with the FIS+ so I am wanting the extra features of the Advanced unit, looks like upgrade time.
-
JackG,
it adds a new screen to the highline FIS so after your kenwood screen you might have bluetooth/phone screen and then Polar screen and through that you can then edit all the options and view the data you want all in the car using the MFSW or the wiper stalk depending on what you have in your car. If you do then I am the UK distributor so drop me a PM.
CupraR I will check up on the best way to update as it might not involve me depends if I can get us a better deal than direct.
-
Rich
It all sounds very interesting...........have you any idea on the cost of the advanced unit

Just looked on the Polar site again and can't see an option for us FIS+ owners, only outright or from PF01 to Advanced.
Willing to test it out on Seat :signLOL:
-
Well polar have put them up for 183Euros but by the time you add taxes and postage its 243 Euros. the FIS+ was 130 Euro that ended up as 180 Euros after tax and shipping, I was able to get a deal from them in groups of 10 and could then sell them on for £150 delivered.
I will have to see what the price comes back as for both update and brand new and once I know I will make a post in the for sale section, or update here.
There was an update listed earlier for FIS+ but they have removed it from reading the forum they had an issue with it actually accepting the update serial number so best to wait till they iron it out  be aware that price on there shop is without taxes.

Crikey.
Yeah, keep us updated please. Definately interested, not going to pay a fortune though. Fingers crossed I suppose. :happy2:
-
The price in there store will be ~72 Euros so nothing too steep will see if there is a better path that I can arrange.

I have agreement for anyone who would like to upgrade a Polar FIS+ aluminium body to Polar advance for £60 if your interested then I will need the serial number of your unit (this is important as it will distinguish your unit) can be found by plugging it into the update tool.
you will then have to flash your unit with a special firmware linked for your unit on the updater which is be your serial number, then when you re-connect again your unit will look like a PF03 or polar FIS advanced.
best best is to email me or PM richard (at) volksdiagnostic.co.uk and we can sort it out.
I have also asked them for the user guides in spanish so I can make a translation and will make them available as the unit operation is starting to get a little more involved

Little video of whats coming in the next week or so to help deal with all the extra information, will be great start up screen with oil level oil and coolant temp, then a driving screen with boost rail pressure EGT missfire intake temp etc
-
Sounds great but why is this not just a free firmware upgrade for Polar FIS+ owners? Are they going to charge £60 every 3 months for software upgrades?
The product states "free software updates" yet Polar FIS was last updated in Oct 10, I suspect Polar FIS+ will not see another update and Polar FIS+ Advanced 2 will come out in 4 months :signLOL:
-
FIS+ will continue to get upgraded they have added atmospheric pressure to the unit in the 0.1.7 beta that is on the update along with bar mbar and PSI as pressure units so now you have have (if ECU is supported) absolute turbo pressure pressure in the system minus atmospheric. The only reason there has been a slow down in FIS+ releases is because the coder has been working hard to finalise the advanced so they can release it.
and updates will continue, but as with anything if people are spending more time developing something and have more IP (intelectual property) invested in a product then it generally costs more. the advanced isnt just about showing parameters its about emulating higher features in the car such as getting OPS to work on the RNS if you have PDC and reverse mirror positioning so they are very different beasties.
And Polar FIS+ the aluminium was updated 17th August 2011 the aluminium box which is what I think you have.

FIS is the black plastic version and it was never up gradable over the internet. And if you have a black plastic one they will take it back and charge a smaller upgrade price to go to a newer unit, which is fair enough, I have done the same to anyone who has spoken to me about upgrading and as a result I have got 4 of the black units sat on a shelf at home so I am £400 out of pocket through helping people out, plus when there were issues with one or two cables I went out and bought new cable new pins from tyco and plugs as I wanted to make a new cable or repair any issues people have had.
If you are not happy with the unit Dave then I am happy to take it back if its in original condition.
-
The new update is also going to give the multiple screens/desktops (unix term) for both FIS+ and FIS Advanced the only difference is the number of parameters and the different comfort features.
-

I'm perfectly happy with it as is, I just expected the stated "free software updates" to be free, not £60
-
There will be free updates, this is a different product that they are selling, the advanced unit is selling for 213 Euros plus delivery on there site, the FIS+ is still for sale they are two separate products, that happen to use the same hardware but with a different firmware and a different set of functions and so they are offering the ability for people who have one to transition to another without having to buy a complete new unit.

Are the polar units for cars with highline computers only?
