Cars booked in for the first service at my local stealer, it's got one of those service plans, done about 4k in the first year & from what I have been reading I'm a little concerned ....couple of questions:
Is it unreasonable to ask the service manager to inspect the car before I hand over the keys & before they hand them back to me? & I was going to kindly ask that they refrain from washing the car.
Is there anything else I should do? Am I being a little bit fussy/funny??
-
You're not being unreasonable at all mate. I had a major service just last week and insisted they didn't wash my car.
I also asked the service guy to come outside and look round my alloys and paintwork too. I have some small scuffs and wanted to be sure he knew if there were anymore after the service then they'd be to blame.
Might also be a good idea to make a note of your mileage and MPG figure in the MFA. If they take it out and thrash it, you'll know if its showing 17mpg.
If you have any potential warranty queries ( no matter how small ) make sure you mention them and get written proof if anything is rectified. Also ask about any recalls that your car may have missed.
Upon collection, ensure they haven't left the 1litre oil bottle rolling around in your boot together with any excess screenwash.
Check your drivers seat for any greasy marks together with your steering wheel and handbrake. :happy2:
-
You sound like me!
I booked in the 1st service said they may hoover it but dont wash it!.
And yes get the service manager to walk round your car before you hand it over!
Mine was £165 with longlife oil, but you dont need to worry about that as its on a service plan :happy2:
-
Mine came to £350 for a major service ( 30k ), a brake fluid change and an oil and filter change for the DSG box. :surprised:
They originally wanted to charge me £170 for the privelage of changing the DSG oil. Needless to say, I negotiated.
Is it just me or does the brake fluid really need changing after 30k ? I tend to think that modern synthetic stuff must resist breaking down far better than the old mineral stuff? Is it just another main agent scam?

I thought that after my old diesel Jetta required a brake fluid change @ 2 years old!

Our local agent has a form with tick boxes they use as they go round and check your vehicle. The car park is usually so jammed they know exactly what I am on about! They also don't let customers retrieve their own vehicle on collection as thats when the open door usually damages the car next to it. :happy2:
-
Quality, will take these on board, esp. like the previous problem line....I may just borrow that one blue....
The miles hadn't even crossed my mind, I'll be sure to make a note - I know it's irrational but i'm still worried
-
i have known the dealers not take the wheels with such low mileage on ..insisted they remove the wheels and inspected the brakes properly and nod not shine a torch through the wheel to look at the brake pads
-
na, im sue hed by happy to wlak round the car.
espec if you bought the car from them, they should do their up most to keep you, and keep you a happy customer..

My best mate is a VW tech and my son is a Ford Tech,
I can guarantee you, for the first service, they will not remove the wheels to inspect the brakes.
You can insist all you like, but unless you wait in a viewing area and physically see them actioning your request, they wont do it.
To inspect the brakes thru the wheel takes seconds. To jack up each wheel, remove it (plus lockbolt) (also wheel may be rusted to hub) and then refit and torque it takes a total of around 20 mins - time they will not give you.
Sorry but its true.
For the first service you pretty much get oil, filter, screenwash and air in your tyres and thats it....All for £145....Im in the wrong job!!!!!
Andy

Yes can vouch for that. My Gt 170 didn't have the wheels removed until 55,000 miles when the Brake pads were first replaced!!! Never known brake pads last so long and they get used :innocent:

Righto - had the 1st service on thursday - dealer checked it out & I did the same afterwards, seemed not an extra dent or scratch....all sounding good so far....asked them to check for a slight rattle on the exhaust heat shield -didn't find anything, oh well...
BUT.......
I'm outside washing it just now & ran a microfibre cloth over the rear of the side skirt to find it moves???? I had a look on the underside & it's cracked just by the back fixing point:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi66.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh269%2Fspikeydoodoo%2FPig.jpg&hash=7e02a4299f341819ad2f5394210a1d850da08569)
Where do I stand now?? It came back from the service & has sat in the garage til now, deffinately wasn't there before it went in - no one else has ever jacked the car or touched it....
-
take it back straight away and kick of holy hell.. :happy2:
-
no-ones in on a sunday......looks like i'll be phoning 8am monday morning.....not impressed  - still not going to let it ruin a sunny sunday
-
is that definately a fresh crack?
I'd be in the car park waiting for them to arrive in the morning :fighting:. if your 100% percent theyre to blame then don't walk away until they 100% fix it and demand to stand in a viewing area to watch the work, or at the least a new part and all associated work
that's disgusting. Mixit's 1st post on this thread is the right approach, shame to do it but it commands attention and therefore should make them take care as they know you'll be trouble otherwise. I'm well known at my local VW, but they still wash my car as the old boy doesnt pay attention he just 'cracks on' dispite my instructions
-
100% - I washed the car last weekend - & I would have noticed - as soon as any pressure is applied to the side skirt it moves....but you can't see it without getting on your hands & knees....I recon it's happened when jacking to check out the exhaust rattle...
I'm going to speak to them on monday but I'm not holding my breath... I have a funny feeling they'll just show me the :angry015:
I spose the only bonus is that it's on the underside & worst case I can repair it & no-one will ever see it....not the point I know - right cheesed off - funny thing is the misus has a new renault twingo & I took that for it's first service to a specialist cause our local dealer was .A. twice the price & .B. doesn't give too hoots - & they did a fantastic job.... If I wasn't tied into a service plan with VW it wouldn't be going back thats for sure....
-
when i took my golf in for its service they dent both siles in by not mounting it on the 2 poster...at first they tried to deny it but i told them it hasn't been jacked up any where else but at thier dealership,i got it repaired in the end...you get better service at a specialist garage as they take pride in thier work more
Hope you get it sorted ok
-
Spikey... This is really bad news mate. I know it seems a bit trivial and its under the car so you're not going to see it but the point is, it's there, you know it's there and it has nothing to do with your neglect or any DiY mess up.
Ask yourself how else could the damage have been caused? Simple answer is it is obvious its been caused by a jack or part of the lift feet. The dealership is responsible and it would be obvious to any service manager worth their salt that the damaged part should be replaced without question.
If the car has never had a puncture in its life, you could argue further that the vehicle has never had to be jacked up at all before. This also begs the question that if this silly, simple slip was made, what else could they have done in an unseen area of your car. I would tactfully put that to them as well.
If they don't resolve this situation for you, every time you wash the car you will think about it and IMO, that is tainting your ownership of the car. Only in a small way, but you'll feel it. Hope you get it sorted.

keep us updated on this :happy2:

Right that's it this thread has made my mind up, mine is not going to the stealers for its first service which is due this week.
I shall be taking it to Votex, where they do what it says on the tin, or is that cuprinol :chicken:

Tell them we did and now use another dealers as they didn't want our custom, but if they had resolved the issue in the first place and the dealership principal hadn't argued with us in the middle of his showroom they might just have got 1 out of 10 :angry015:...but the service at the new dealers is miles better :happy2:
-
making you wait until wednesday! it's a no brainer :fighting:

Hi All
Quick update: Service manager back from leave but too busy to find the time to speak to me, & apparently no other manager is available to help. Thats 4 separate calls to the dealer.
Call to VW customer services, quick explaination of the problem, & they seem to think it's my word against thiers, no surprise there then....but they are going to get the dealer to call me, well I wished her the best of luck with that....
-
Thats just a fob off.... stick to your guns m8
-
definately stand your ground, do it loudly inside the showroom on saturday morning... that would get attention
-
keep going into the dealer! cant fob you off when u standing there!
-
That is shocking! Get down there and kick up a real fuss!
-
Had the call this afternoon, after a prompt from VW HO.
They want to have a look at it, which is to be expected, but did slip in that they don't jack the car from the jacking points? they do something with the chasis??? I'm a little lost there???
But I've just been out & had a look at the side skirt & there is an arrow on the underside, would i be right in thinking that was where the car should be jacked from? & if so there is a seam about an inch inside, on both sides, the underseal/dirt has been distrubed from I guess jacking?
-
they may have used a trolley jack on the chassis, if pushed too far under, the bumper it would indeed get fouled by the jacks lifting arm. or could be bad positioning on the hydraulic lift, wont be the ramp type if thats the case, it would be more likely bad positioning of the pads on a pole lift where theres a pad placed under each corner to lift the car thus keeping the wheels accessable to remove
-
it looks like the position of the pads were not in the correct place and also the pads not wound up enough so the ramp leg has caught the skirt going up
-
I've just got back from the car being inspected....
Took less than 2 mins initially the guy tried to say that they don't jack from there again??
So I showed him exactly where it had been jacked (same on both sides) & the crack - at which point he looked ever so slightly embarassed, & then said for the sake of an arguement I'll fix that for you. I asked what he meant by fix, & he explained they have a guy that specialises in plastic repairs... My face must have said it all, so he then followed that up with if it's not 100% up to standard then they'll look at other options...
I'm reasonably happy with that, I have to admit I went there with the expectation of being given the :angry015: & a right old fight on me hands....
Thanks for all the tips & advice!! :happy2:
-
nope, not good enough. new bumper please, sprayed and fitted.
-
I agree with VC - the guy has almost held his hands up and said that he will fix it but made it out like hes doing you a favour!
Stamp feet and demand what is yours- a brand new painted bumper :fighting:
-
Wouldn't mind a new bumper, but it's the side skirt thats broken  I recon I'd be pushing me luck there a bit. But I like your style....
-
